Play is good read

I saw this play in NYC with Jared Harris and Blair Brown and really enjoyed it. It was funny and moving and really had heart. When I picked it up to read it, I wondered if it would read as well -- and it did. This is a very smart play -- Charlotte Jones has written a play where the characters are fully realized and funny -- all the while searching for understanding, connection and love.

Fresh, clever, gentle and poignant

I just saw this play produced at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. There are only so many family skeletons you can expose, and "Humble Boy" borrows liberally from that well-stocked closet. But those it drags out are embodied in well-defined characters and presented with fresh wit, excellent pacing, gentleness, and poignancy. Felix's search for the physicist's "theory of everything" is handled lightly, never bogs down in technical jargon, and never overshadows the characters' concerns of the heart. Although I would have preferred a slightly different ending, it worked because the characters were true to themselves. A wonderful play.

"Humble Boy" - A funny and well-crafted play

"Humble Boy" by Charlotte Jones, is a well crafted and poignantly funny little play. The characters are cleverly drawn with all being sympathetic and despicable in different mixtures. This gives all of us who read it pause to consider how we treat and react with others who may have, by no fault of their own, fallen into an undesired or different life or life-style. Enjoyment of Slow Cooking

I seldom cook at home and make my own meals. After reading this book, I got excited about cooking at home and with a slow cooker. I discovered that I can make meals that will last a long time. The 50 recipes are very helpful and I realized that I can also have fun cooking an experimenting. This book is very valuable and has made me realize that I don't have to eat out all the time and I can stay home and have fun with slow cooking. The book has made me open my eyes about changing my behavior when it comes to food. I can't wait to start slow cooking and show off my dinners to friends and family. I highly recommend this book. Also by slow cooking I can save a lot of money.

Valuable slow cooker info

I have a few slow cooker recipe books and this is the first one I have read that has information about what is a slow cooker, the advantages and disadvantages of using a slow cooker. I see that the author went to great lengths to get this information and I appreciate the tip about placing the slow cooker on an appropriate spot on the kitchen counter. That is some valuable information.

I love this cookbook because it starts off with information about slow cookers and how to use them properly. I am excited to make more of the recipes in this book. I have made almost all of them and I especially love the breakfast recipes and now I wake up to a warm breakfast to start the day off right. If you are looking for some tasty and easy recipes for your slow cooker, this is the book for you.

Hamlet, Prince of Denmark CD set

It's hard to believe the producers of this version could have allowed it to continue much beyond Anton Lesser's first appearance on the parapets. While the rest of the cast comes up with credible performances, his Hamlet is perhaps the worst I have ever heard. He has but two means of projecting his character: either by emoting faster than a speeding bullet or whispering his lines as indistinctly as possible. I alone am at fault for buying this CD set but in the future I'll be very careful whenever I see his name as part of the cast and will make sure I have permission to return it before purchasing. Dreadful!

Very much illustrated in a wonderful line-work, Art nouveau style (that you can clearly see in the sample pages). Beautiful full page and accent art and nice hardcover binding. I don't think some people understand how, and why, to review books.

Must-try recipes!

I like to try new ways of cooking and this book gives such practical techniques of cooking food for those on the paleo diet. It was interesting and the use of the crock pot is a time-saver. The classic whole roast chicken is a common dish but I tried it according to the recipe in this book, it was amazingly and uniquely flavored. My family loved it! I will definitely be trying out the other mouth-watering recipes in here.

I am new to the Paleo diet so had been having trouble finding a lot of recipes, but with this wonderful book, you get 70 mouth-watering recipes that will have you craving more! Dieting has never been so easy to follow, just throw everything into the crock pot and end up with delicious, nutritious meals with minimal effort. You have to try: Chicken stew with squash and herbs, and Asian sesame honey beef, they taste amazing!!!

The table of contents list the dishes in the cookbook in no particular order. It makes it hard to read. It is also difficult to find a particular recipe i.e. for main dish or even a "chicken dish." It claims to contain "slow cooker recipes" but many of the recipes have to be browned under the broiler or on top of the stove prior to placing them in the crock pot.

A very good critical edition of a neglected play

This volume, part of the third series of the Arden Shakespeare, is long overdue, since good critical editions of "Two Noble Kinsmen" have been scarce compared with other Shakespeare plays (perhaps because of its joint authorship with John Fletcher). Lois Potter does a splendid job of giving a well-edited text, with thorough notation of emendations of the First Quarto of 1634, and offering an informative introduction detailing the theatrical and critical fortunes of this work.

A Rosetta Stone for Appreciating Shakespeare

The Two Noble Kinsmen was only partially written by Shakespeare. The primary author was John Fletcher, and Shakespeare seems to have been doing a rewrite more than a collaboration. As a result, you get two different styles of narration and development in the same story. The underlying tale follows very closely on the famous Knight's Tale from Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales. As a result, you get a three way perspective on Shakespeare that is not available elsewhere -- what his co-author did, what Chaucer did, and how Shakespeare handled similar problems in other plays.
Where the Knight's Tale was primarily a story about chivalry, love, and spirituality, The Two Noble Kinsmen is very much about psychology and human emotions. Like other plays that Shakespeare wrote, this one shows how conflicting emotions create problems when we cannot master ourselves. In this case, the two loving cousins, Palamon and Arcite, fall out over having been overwhelmed by love for the appearance of Emilia, Duke Theseus's sister. The play explores many ways that their fatal passion for Emilia might be quenched or diverted into more useful paths. The dilemma can only be resolved by the removal of one of them. This places Emilia in an awkward situation where she will wed one, but at the cost of the life of the other. She finds them both attractive, and is deeply uncomfortable with their mutual passion for her. In a parallel subplot, the jailer's daughter similarly falls in love with Palamon, putting her father's life and her own in jeopardy. Overcome with unrequited love, she becomes mad from realizing what she has done. Only by entering into her delusions is she able to reach out to others.
What most impressed me from reading this play is how much better Shakespeare was as a writer than either Chaucer or Fletcher. You can tell the parts that Shakespeare wrote because the language is so compact, so powerful, and so filled with relevant imagery. The tension is unremitting and makes you squirm.
By contrast, the Knight's Tale is one of the dullest stories you could possibly hope to read and admire for its virtuosity without experiencing much enjoyment. Although the same plot is developed, few emotions will be aroused in you. When Fletcher is writing in this play, the development is slow, the content lacks much emotion, and you find yourself reaching for a blue pencil to strike major sections as unnecessary.
In fact, this play would not be worth reading except for the exquisite development of the dilemmas that are created for Emilia. Her pain will be your pain, and you will want to escape from it as much as she does. In these sections, you will find some of Shakespeare's greatest writing.
I also was moved by the way several scenes explored the duality of cousinly friendship and affection occurring at the same time that lethal passions of love and jealousy are loose.
Although this play will probably not be among your 50 favorites, you will probably find that it will sharpen your appetite for and appreciation of Shakespeare's best works.
I also listened to Arkangel recording, and recommend it. The performances are fine, the voices are easy to distinguish, the music is magnificent, the singing adds to the mood nicely, and you will find your engagement in the play's action powerfully increased over reading the play.

an unsung masterpiece

I will be the first to admit this is not the "best" or the "greatest" play written by the bard, but it is still very worthy of his name, and incredibly beautiful! Kinsmen is a romance in the style of Shakespeare's other late plays, Pericles, Cymbeline, The Winter's Tale, and The Tempest (my favorite). In many ways it reflects his earlier works, namely A Midsummer Night's Dream, Hamlet, and The Tempest. It tells a wonderfully romantic story of two good friends who fall for the same girl (I know, sounds familiar, but trust me, it's a different take on the setup) in Athens. The poetry in it is lovely, the characters very well developed, and the plot is incredible. Many people haven't heard of this play as Shakespeare cowrote it with Fletcher, but belive me, it is still wonderful. Highly recomended.

Tea is a beautiful thing!

Today's tea is not one you drink with your mouth, but one you drink with your mind. Ok, you can drink your tea book if you really want to, but as much as I love the smell of paper, I do not think it tastes the best. The other day when I posted on Twitter that I was thinking about reviewing the tea books I own (and ones I can get at my library) I asked if anyone had any requests...and the response was 'my favorite' which is a challenge in itself!

Tea Sommelier by Gabriella Lombardi and Fabio Petroni just might fill that bill. When I first saw this book last Christmas while browsing at Barnes and Noble I knew I had to add it to my collection, I flipped through it every time I visited the bookstore (which is a lot, Ben and my favorite dates always end up with us at a bookstore...we have a thing for books) and waiting till the price on Amazon dropped to something I could afford. I just procured this book for my collection last week, and I am pleased as punch, because it is a beauty!

Looks alone do not make a book, unless it is a book that is specifically about visuals, which this one is not. Even though it has the look and incredible photography of a coffee table book, it is loaded with useful information. Tea Sommelier approaches the art of sipping tea very much so like it is an art and from a professional taster's perspective. Borrowing much of the jargon from the Wine Sommelier world and shaping it to fit the world of tea.

The book is divided into a typical brief introduction on the history of tea, the tea plant itself, various methods of preparing tea, a decent sized section on professional tea tasting (including ISO cupping standards) a whopping 135 pages devoted to different kinds of tea, and lastly a colorful selection of gourmet recipes.

There are some things about this book that I absolutely love. It is beautiful, a work of art showcasing fantastic teas, tea gear, and photography. The history of tea mentioning all three of the myths concerning the creation of tea was especially amusing, too many books skip over Bodhidharma (Daruma) tearing off his eyelids in a fit of rage after falling asleep and said eyelids growing into tea trees. It is a weird myth but everything concerning Daruma is a little quirky. I love how it pairs each tea with foods that it tastes good with, as the person who is always in charge of matching tea to whatever foods and people's tastes at family events...it is very nice to have a handy guide to turn to.

There are, however, some things that make me go 'eh' as well, nothing is ever perfect and I tend to be picky with books. For all that the photos in this book are fantastic works of art, I really get annoyed with lightbox photography. Some of the colors of the tea just seem wrong, either too dark or too vibrantly green, I have never seen some of the delicate Chinese green teas in that shade of green either in my own sipping experience or online, it is really a minor gripe, it just weirds me out a bit. My big gripe is the whole language and approach to tea in this book seems, well, unapproachable, similar to the way gourmet cuisine and wine tasting can seem very unapproachable to someone not already in the know. This is not necessarily a bad thing, especially for someone who is already well into tea world, but if you are new to the tea world it might seem a but imposing. I suppose this is part of a greater rant that certain aspects of the tea world (lovingly and not so lovingly at times call tea snobbery) tend to come off as unwelcoming to newcomers, which is something I am strongly against. I am very much so in the 'oh hey, want to try tea, let me shower you with yummies until you find your favorite' mindset.

One thing about this book that has sent me into a near tizzy researching is the approach to the tea Huang Shan Huo Ya. Everywhere on the internet and every book I have read has called it a Yellow Tea, Tea Sommlier calls it a green tea that commonly gets labeled as a yellow tea due to poor translation. Since I was unable to find any other factual inconsistencies anywhere else in the book I really find myself wanting to know. So far, no luck.

So, why is this book still my favorite? Because it is beautiful, because it treats tea as an art, because I still dream of one day being a Tea Sommelier. Do I recommend it? Heck yes! If you are a newbie to tea just approach with caution...the tea world is not all fancy teas, elegant teapots, and lofty concepts...we are also lovers of quirky blends, teabags, herbal teas, and re-purposed coffee mugs. Don't feel intimidated by tasting terms and Grand Cru teas. If you are a well seasoned sipper (or a well seasoned Yixing Teapot that has gained sentience) then this book is a great reference tool. Either way, the overwhelming prettiness of this book is certainly a plus!

Attention, Tea Lovers !

A great book for anyone who loves tea. I bought this book for a colleague who is a true tea lover as she purchases her tea from Mariage Freres. She was so taken with this book that it will become part of her permanent library. The book was quite artistic but also was very educational as well. I also have a copy and I loved it. Therefore, I bought a copy for my colleague who will be moving out of the country. I feel this book is a must for anyway who loves tea and wishes to display a very artistic representation of the art and enjoyment of tea.

This book presents tea with the detail only a Sommelier can give.

This is a beautiful book. Full page size photos enhance the beauty of tea and the tea pot. Each type of tea, white, yellow, green, oolong, and pu er are described in detail with pictures. In addition to the pictures, each tea is described in terms of flavor and color characteristics. The picture of each tea in a clear cup shows the color of the final infusion. Clear instruction is given for the preparation of each tea. The eastern and western methods are differentiated. If you use the proper water, at the correct temperature for your selected tea and infuse for the correct amount of time then you will achieve perfection. Certain tea pots are also recommended. For some teas you can use a memory pot. These pots retain the flavor of the tea infused. You should not mix teas with this type of pot. The "seasoning" of the pot will enhance your tea experience. Tea is vulnerable to light and air. Don't buy teas that are stored in glass jars. And don't store tea In glass at your home. The fermented Pu er teas are rare, exotic and very expensive depending on how long they have been aged. If you only get 1 book on tea, this is the book to get. Thousands of years of history, culture and knowledge are collected in this volume.

Needs some editing

This cookbook contains an integrated Table of Contents that's broken down into three sections; "Bread and Breakfast," "Pasta, Pie and Salads," and "Savory and Soups" with individual recipes listed under each heading. There are 31 recipes total and no pictures. Most of the recipes only have a few steps in the directions, making them quick and easy to prepare.

I would give this book a better rating but the formatting of the book is a bit irritating. There are large, empty, gaps that exist between some of the recipes, no matter what size font I tried. The recipe titles are in a super, large-sized font and frequently appear at the bottom of the previous page...the title often being the only thing on the page. Sometimes the recipe title is split between two pages, half the title on the bottom of one page, the other half on the top of the next page. (I use font size 1 on my Kindle Fire so the entire title should fit easily on one page, especially if that page is basically empty.)

I haven't read every single recipe from beginning to end, but I did notice there were some issues with two of the recipes that I did read. Recipe 13. "Tuna Salad Nicoise," has headings for "ingredients" and "directions" but nothing is written under either one. There's no recipe at all, just a title and the sub-headings. Recipe 16. "Pesto Tuna Salad with Sun Dried Tomatoes" has steps numbered 1, 2, 3 and 6 under the directions. (It's missing steps 4 and 5) I'm assuming that's just a numbering error because the directions appear to be complete. (At least the directions make sense as written.)

This cookbook is certainly usable as is but little editing and better formatting would make a huge difference.

Another fake book by a fake cut-and-paste recipe rip-off publisher.

#1 “Tuna Quesadillas” is really “Tangy Tuna Black Bean Quesadillas” off allrecipesDOTcom submitted by SUPERTIM99 around May30,2009, and was never cooked by this fake author or anyone at Encore Publishing either. The directions on the web site tell you to drain the water, this recipe never does. Bad directions.

The proof of that fact is in Encore’s directions: “3.Spread half of the mixture on the tortilla. Sprinkle half of the cheese on top of the mixture. Cover the skillet and allow to cook for 1 minute. Flip the quesadilla and cover for one to two minutes longer.” At that point, what you have on top of the single tortilla is cheese so when you flip it, you will have melted cheese on your skillet. That’s NOT the way you make quesadillas.

The part they left out of the directions from the above web site where they got the recipe is as follows: ” Sprinkle with half the Mexican cheese; cover with another tortilla. Place a lid on the skillet and cook for 1 minute.” And that, my friends, is how you make a quesadilla. That’s a pretty important quesadilla direction – placing a 2nd tortilla on top of the first tortilla and its content inside the skillet.

This also makes their servings wrong. They don’t end up with 4 servings but really 8 servings simply because they tried to hide the fact they got this recipe off a copyright-protected Internet site. All the ingredient quantities are exactly the same but they change the instructions to try and hide the theft of the IP not realizing that would change the servings. Just not cooks, only cut-and-pasters.

They try to make the books seem larger and more important by adding unnecessary blank spaces between the recipes they’ve copied off the Internet. Therefore, the title to recipe #2 is at the bottom of the page of directions for recipe #1 and the ingredients start on the next page. Bad formatting as another review has also pointed out. You’d think they would have benefited from his comments but not so.

The recipe is “Mediterranean Style Tuna Wrap” which is really a recipe called “MediterraneanTuna Wrap” developed and copyright-protected, all rights reserved by Ellie Krieger in 2007. Posted on the foodnetworkDOTcom and “Eating Healthy” magazine in 2009. All the ingredients are in the exact same quantities and same order in this fake book as they are on the Internet site and copyrighted by Ellie Krieger.

One of the funnier ones is the #6 “Speedy Bagel Tuna Melt” which is really “”Speedy Bagel Tuna Melt” posted on allrecipesDOTcom by lkk around November 10, 2007, and the fake author left out the tuna! Very talented cook that listed ALL the same ingredients in the exact same amounts for a tuna recipe and left out the tuna! IT is to laugh. But Encore did say to mix the mysterious quantity of tuna in the instructions where it is mentioned.

#7 “Chili Tuna Wraps” is really “Spicy Tuna Wraps” from the March/April 2011 issue of EatingWell magazine. But again, the incompetence of this fake author and publisher is evident because they left out the hot sauce in the ingredient list but tell you to add the mystery quantity to the “medium bowl” in direction #1. It would be better if you went to the website where this recipe really lives and get the better and correct version plus the nutrition information and not screw around with this bunch of incompetents.

#8 “Huevos Endiablados” is really ”Huevos Endiablados” developed by Allrecipes for their website allrecipesDOTcom around February 25, 2013. Another funny thing – apparently the recipe copier thinks all salt must go with pepper so “1/4 tsp pepper” was added to the ingredients list that didn’t appear on the original ingredient list on the Allrecipes original version.

But it isn’t added to a lot of recipes where black pepper bits will look unattractive such as in deviled eggs such as this recipe. If the taste of pepper is desired, white pepper may be required in place of black so there’s no little black specks to ruin the appearance of the final product. And, this brilliant recipe copier forgot to list the adding of the pepper to the instructions. Just a copy-and-paster fake book maker, not a cook or recipe maker.

And on and on and on ad nausea as always with this fake publisher.

Yuck!

Fruit, Veggie, and Tuna Salad Wrap - no note, even though the tuna is tuna steaks. Recipe #4. Recipe #13, Tuna Salad Niciose had absolutely no info. No ingredients, no instructions. Hum. Recipe #15 Tuna with Pesto, had no pesto.

On the other hand, it didn't have the recipe from the box of macaroni and cheese I use.

Ms. Swanson, please be more careful in your books.
