Simply stated, The Royalist Republic by Helmer J. Helmers is wonderful. Employing Dutch and English tracts, plays, and poems from the 1630s through 1650s, Helmers successfully completes the task he set for himself: bridging the divide existing between political and literary history as well as the vast distances existing between Anglo-Scoto, or as he terms it, “British,” and Dutch disciplinary traditions (p. xii). In this task, he argues against the ongoing geographical and topical self-limitations occurring in British-Dutch historiographical narratives. Further, he asserts that the Dutch royalist support for Charles II arose from a wider “Anglo-Scoto-Dutch discourse inspired by the Wars of the Three Kingdoms,” independently of Stuart appeals for help and British propaganda apparatuses, and influencing politico-religious discourses in the Netherlands and British Isles (p. 5). Finally, he affirms that the First Anglo-Dutch War was more complex than a simple religious conflict that contemporary propagandistic rhetoric may suggest. Indeed, according to him the international conflict between the Republic and Commonwealth arose from economic competition.

Early in the monograph, Helmers establishes his stance against the archipelagic nature of British history. Noting John Pocock’s critiques originating in the 1970s, Helmers suggests that the historiographical narrative has only begun to move beyond the confines of the British Isles. England is still often cast as the predominant actor in the historiography, and relations with the Dutch are still viewed from an anglocentric perspective. By focusing on the Dutch and their contributions to the pamphlet war of 1638-60, he concludes that Anglo-Scoto politico-religious debates that played out in the Netherlands allowed the British to partake in Dutch “vernacular propaganda.” The interplay between English sources and Dutch audiences, fomented by discursive overlaps, allowed various confessional and political identities to be negotiated on both sides of the English Channel. This international audience, infused with “vernacular propaganda,” explored the morality and ramifications of backing either the Stuart regime or the Commonwealth. Hence, the Anglo-Scoto propaganda, translated into Dutch, had real influence in the Netherlands and was not limited to, or intended only for, English readers. For example, Helmers posits that the foreign policy of the States General relied on democratic consensus between the nobles, provincial assembles, and the city councils which instructed the assemblies. Thus, the translation of English and Scottish pamphlets into Dutch had a “pivotal role,” as the translated propaganda influenced Dutch public opinion, political rhetoric and debate, and, ultimately, the taking up of foreign policy issues by the States General (p. 59). The War of the Three Kingdoms, in short, was an international affair.

It is little surprise, then, that the English Civil Wars affected Dutch politics as well as the Dutch religious response to events in the British Isles during the 1640s and 1650s. For example, Helmers notes the printing of Contra-Remonstrant pamphlets and treatises in support of Parliament. These pamphlets “embarrassed both the States General and the Stadtholder,” whom held a strict policy of secular neutrality (p. 69). As a result, the politico-religious ramifications of the Contra-Remonstrant support for Parliament limited the Prince of Orange, Frederick Henry, from aiding Charles I. Facing domestic challenges to their authority, the House of Orange could ill afford losing Contra-Remonstrant backing. This growing affinity between Dutch and Anglo-Scottish Protestants was further reinforced by propaganda beyond merely offering support for Charles. The ongoing conflict between Puritans and supporters of Arminianism became an ostensibly international affair, Helmer maintains, with Dutch Remonstrants, such as Gerardus Vossius and Hugo Grotius, feeling kindred with the Laudian Church. However, with the execution of Charles I in 1649, the Dutch support for Parliament quickly deteriorated regardless of confessional sympathies. The growth of a new propagandistic form, which Helmers terms “the cult of the martyr king,” motivated Dutch intervention in the British Isles by promoting the late Charles as a Christ-like figure. Beyond using the famous Eikon Basilike, Helmers also provides a multitude of translated poems, pamphlets, and imported engravings to support his argument. Accordingly, he finds that Dutch republicanism was not necessarily averse to absolutism and kingship, with prominent jurists such as Dirk Graswinckel and the Dutch public both sympathetic to Charles I’s heroic performance on the scaffolds and supportive of the Republic. Therefore, Anglo-Scoto propaganda and British domestic politico-religious affairs affected the establishment not only in the Three Kingdoms, but also in Dutch international and domestic affairs.

Regardless of Remonstrant and Contra-Remonstrant, Puritan and anti-Puritan, reactions to the English Civil Wars, Helmers holds that the First Anglo-Dutch War was not particularly prompted by religious concerns. Rather, he proposes that the war resulted from economic issues. In particular, he criticizes James Jones’s and Stephen Pincus’s scholarship that promotes a religiously ideological understanding of the war. Further, in agreement with Jonathan Scott, Helmers writes that, “by relegating trade to the background, Pincus loses sight of the Dutch perspective” (pp. 199-200). The rhetoric of pamphlets, as noted throughout this monograph, was infused with religious undertones. During the 1650s, the rhetoric became even more confessional as demonology became a popular topic of discussion. Dutch propaganda began casting images of the Stuarts and Dutch royalism as bringers of “divine goodness” and their Parliamentarian and Puritanical opponents as perpetuators of “satanic evil.” Regardless of this turn, though, Helmers writes that, “an economic reading of the war did not preclude a religious reading, but rather necessitated it” (pp. 201-202). The economic aspects of the war became an outwardly visible sign that “Evil” was attacking Dutch interests. Despite the Dutch loss of the war in 1654, Anglo-Scottish and Dutch propaganda continued to coach the discourse against Cromwell in terms of a fight against Evil itself. This propaganda, brought about by both Dutch and Anglo-Scoto efforts and not only English efforts alone, provided the discourse necessary to encouraging the Restoration and later Dutch opposition to the Stuart regime. While permeated with religious understandings, the discourse noted economics nonetheless and demanded that justice be rendered for attacks upon the financial well-being of the Netherlands.

Helmers’s monograph adds to the ongoing internationalization of the English Civil Wars, moving the historiography beyond the limitations imposed by the continuance of archipelagic approaches. Employing translated pamphlets, poems, plays, and other media, he successfully asserts that Dutch and Anglo-Scoto propaganda had real, tangible effects on both British and Dutch domestic politics, internal religious conflicts, and foreign policy. Finally, though the period in question was infused with religious rhetoric and discourses, international conflicts had equally economic and political dimensions that some historians continue to downplay or overlook. My new favorite cookbook

I hate to cook but I LOVE this book. So far I've tried 4 recipes from this book and every one was a hit with my picky husband. The recipes are super easy and typically use ingredients I already have at home. You literally put the ingredients into a casserole, then bake it in the oven. A great recipe book for fast dump meals

This is a collection of quick and easy, one pot meals. Most can be frozen and then reheated making for a very easy mealtime. The book contains recipes for many different types of meals including soups, various meat dishes, pasta, and vegetable dishes. Most of the recipes are accompanied by colour photographs.

The book is well written and complete (including number of servings which is a treat) and are laid out in a professional manner. The recipes themselves are easy to follow and do not require a master chef to follow. In fact, I would suggest this to be a good first cookbook for your student or newly-on-their-own son or daughter.

My only complaint is the lack of a Kindle menu. There's no easy way to get back to the cover or the table of contents.

Very good book...have tried many of the recipes, and have only had trouble with one, and I added a few ingredients and it turned out very well. I would recommend this book to anyone that wants to cook meals in a crockpot and have free time to do other things.

A great introduction to Alkaline Drinks!

This book is a great introduction to alkaline drinks! It really appeared to me at the right time! I am usually not an alcohol drinker, and I was invited by a friend to have some glasses of wine. I felt extremely intoxicated afterwards with lots of acid burn, and was desperate to eliminate all the toxins away fast! So I grabbed this book and picked a juice recipe, which I ate as a cold soup. The following hours, I felt much better, and all the acid burn was gone! I also learned many new things in this book concerning alkaline and acidic food, which I never used to pay attention to in the past. I am really looking forward to discover more books from Marta Tuchowska, and live the Alkaline life! The author really writes in a very nice, warm, and friendly way!

An Outstanding book by an Outstanding Author

Marta always delivers high quality wellbeing books. And she does this again! ....we are generally not conscious about the problems of acidity, and its real causes. This book teaches you how to choose more alkaline food, and how to combine both, alkaline and acidic food without harm.

What surprised me the most in this book was to learn that there are some foods and drinks, which are usually considered to be healthy and healing, where in fact extremely acidic.......and might cause us more harm than good. I have been suffering from acidity, and this book made me realise the cause of my problem, and how to prevent acidity from occurring. I really like the fact that Marta is not imposing, and that there is total freedom to choose.

You can still consume your favourite acidic foods and drinks with moderation.
Last but not least, there are delicious juices, teas and smoothies recipes that will help you detox and have more energy!

In Northern New Jersey, it is called a Taylor Ham. In Central and Southern New Jersey, it is referred to as the pork roll. The Pork Roll is actually produced and distributed by the Taylor Ham company and the Case Pork Roll.

This book is quite informative on about the Pork Roll's colorful history and influence on the New Jersey and Mid-Atlantic region. The book is both entertaining and informative about New Jersey living. The pork roll is a deli staple in New Jersey. The book offers an introduction on four chapters entitled; "A History of the Pork Roll;" "A Porcine Party;" "Pork Roll Today;" and "A New Jersey Thing."

After reading about the pork roll's history, you will no doubt want to try easy simple recipes. The book has recipes for "Starters & Snacks" including "Deviled Eggs with Pork Roll;" "Jersey Style Creamy Dip;" "Pork Roll Stromboli;" and others in this section.

This book is everything I expected and more. I read through it in one sitting, sometimes salivating while reading the numerous recipes using pork roll. I couldn't wait to go in search for some Taylor Pork Roll here in NC, and luckily found it at one of the more upscale supermarkets in my area. I grew up in a suburb of Philadelphia, where it was readily available, and my family and I all loved it. This is a great little cookbook that is welcomed to my rather large collection of cookbooks.

"But what about THEM?"

An engaging play by a philosopher-turned-dramatist about a dramatic philosopher. The interest of Wittgenstein's life threatens to overwhelm the interest of his philosophy. So it is that dramatic renderings, like this play, or Derek Jarman's film, show us much more about his life and personality than about his work. But that is what most non-philosophers would find most interesting. In Jarman's film the philosophy is almost ridiculed (as with Aristophanes' play about Socrates). In this brief play the philosophy is not a focus. There is a scene from a class in 1938 in which Wittgenstein agonizes over the different uses of "same"--what we would now call numerical identity and qualitative indiscernibility, and what we would call types and tokens. This is not in fact something he did specifically agonize over, but it is a good illustrative discussion for the layperson. As far as Wittgenstein's life and personality, the play shows what a deep yet difficult person he was. He left indelible marks (sometimes injuries) on those he knew. The best line in the play is the last one, in which the author handles Wittgenstein's dying words: "Tell them I had a wonderful life.": When this is reported to her, Lady Ottoline Morrell remarks: "But what about THEM?"

An old favorite

I found this on my cousin's bookshelf with I was but a wee thing, stole it. A classic of Victorian erotica, it's the story of Jack who gets jilted by his fiancee and takes revenge on her, her maid, and others in a lovingly described soundproofed room with equisite details of torture and pleasure. Cleis Press is keeping this old classic in print!

13 pieces of Victorian variety

It is a common stereotype that Victorian [...] was all caning, servants, and beaten children. Granted those are common themes but this collection shows more variety than that. We find old men and rejected men stealing innocence and women who have cast aside the sexual mores of their time to become preedators themselves. There are some hierarchical situations but most of the action takes place between social and age peers. I've removed one star from my rating because there are two important things missing from this book. The first are simple introductions to the pieces; even if we don't know the author we can know when it written and which country it was created in. Victorianism was fairly wide=spread for several decades but how it played out varied. Second the pieces need to be identified when they are only sections from a larger work or a series of stories. This would enable those who find the writting exciting to find other Victorian porn.

Erotic Victorian Stories

Years ago I owned a few paper-backed books written in the Victorian Era. All of which written by the author: Anonymous. I'm not certain whether the author penned his name as Anonymous, or that there were others and a group of them fell under the assumption Anonymously.
All of the books had a similarity of verse and the style very constant throughout. To me, the author seemed as one person, and his writings very concise and exact in descriptions. This book - Man with a Maid: And Other Victorian Stories - is one example of those I owned years ago. Even after many years I haven't read these novels, I was happy to conclude my own satisfaction was renewed, and recommend this, as well as the entire line of Anonymous writings.

Thought Provoking and Stunning

Home sweet home: a place of love, refuge, and memories. For Helen Martin's it was also her life, her work and her Mecca. In the play "The Road to Mecca" Athol Fugard explores the question: Should we leave our Mecca, our spiritual fountainhead, when we can no longer take care of ourselves? The conflict between the three strong willed characters Helen, Elsa and Pastor Marius explores the question in the light of different religions, cultures, genders, ages and environments. Fugard said the play was suggested by the life and work of Helen Martins of New Bathesda, South Africa. The real Helen from age 50 to 75 transformed her house into a personal universe that enters the realm of archetype, symbol and metaphor. The house, furniture, windows and walls became a kaleidoscope of colored glass. In her garden she constructed over 200 figures: owls, Biblical figures, Buddhas, and ancient gods and goddesses. One South African scholar described her work as one of the most stirring experiences of his life and another called her one of South Africa's artistic geniuses. Fugard in his play shows Helen's creations as a glorious, makeshift oasis of creativity and life force and Elsa, his character, sees Helen as an example of freedom and transcendence. One powerful scene is when Helen, seated in her Mecca with dozens of candles playing off glittered walls and mirrors, tells Pastor Marius "I can't reduce my world to a few ornaments in a small room in an old-age home." The effect is stunning. The play is thought provoking and gives few answers. Helen is alive when it ends. Sadly, in 1975, the real Helen committed suicide. She drank caustic soda and died after three days I solitary agony. Her will included complex instructions listing in detail the ritual disposal of each of her sculptures. But today her home, known as "The Owl House" has been proclaimed a national monument and is a mecca for artists and tourists.

A Memorable Pleasure

A reclusive elderly widow (based on the late Helen Martins, whose South African home is now a museum) has created her own "Mecca" by decorating the inside of her home with candles and mirrors and by surrounding the house with an assortment of personally-sculpted mermaids, wisemen, peacocks and pyramids. Although her neighbors view Miss Helen as a crazy old woman, she has made friends with Elsa Barlow, a young teacher who has returned for a surprise visit. On that same day, clergyman Marius Byleveld has come to help Helen apply to a nursing home. Marius is fond of Helen and fears for her safety. Elsa is in opposition to a move as it would take Helen away from her art.
I was originally concerned that a drama focusing on an old woman's artwork would not translate well to a listening experience. How could I care as deeply about Miss Helen if I was not able to see the oddball sculptures she had created? Surely the vision of "a city of light and color more splendid than anything I had ever imagined" could not be adequately transmitted through the speakers of my tape player. I need not have worried. One of my favorite parts of the entirely wonderful listen remains the moment when Helen lights her room with candles -- music comes up and there is absolutely no problem seeing a room aglow in a growing light of imagination and art. Adding to the experience is a superb cast performing a well-written examination of what it means to be an artist, what it means to be older, and what it means to be shunned. Fabulous!

An elderly iconoclast blossoms...

The Road to Mecca is a crucible for Miss Helen, the seemingly strange, eccentric widower holed up on her bizarre property in rural New Bethesda, South Africa. She is clearly different, as evidenced by her many sculptures and odd creations surrounding her house, which unto itself holds a myriad of eccentric charms.

She comes to odds when Elsa, a young woman committed to Helen surprisingly appears at her door and discovers Helen on the verge of giving up on life. Elsa's staunch commitment to Helen's unique beauty conflicts with Dominee Marius', a local preacher who stands on the side of the patronizing, yet caring Christian community.

The play is dynamic in it's a)exposure of isolated aging, b)Elsa's youthful/urban attitude vs. Helen's elderly/rural one, c)soul crushing Christian convalescence vs. a spirited iconoclastic artistic home, d)characteristics of artistic inspiration, e)creativity's essential place in daily life, f) the long journey of self discovery, among others.

A powerful conclusion as well demonstrates Fugard's unbound compassion and empathy for spirited life under South Africa's skies.

Great Adaptation of the Novel

I had the pleasure of seeing this play live in Chicago, and it was fantastic. Walsh's adaptation is taut and makes for a great evening of theatre. What could have been a 3 hour slog or a word-for-word live version of the book, is instead a well honed, smartly edited, compellingly written piece that captures the qualities and themes that have made the original novel so beloved. Highly recommended, check this out!

Dickens would love this gripping adaptation of 'Two Cities'

Christopher Walsh knows a good storyline and adapts it to modern audiences. By stripping away the archaic, Walsh focuses on Dickens' story set in London and Paris before and during the French Revolution and tells the tale Dickens would endorse. Although adapted before for film and stage, this version is gripping.

I witnessed every emotion possible. What a writer!

This is a play about two brothers who kill. One does it professionally as a member of the armed forces, the other does it as a reaction to his girlfriend's unfaithfulness. We see one brother celebrated and the other punished. We see the reaction on family and friends leading, eventually, to the breakup of the brothers' parents' marriage. Adam Pernak is so skillful in the way he evokes such strong emotions one minute with belly laughter the next and with a perfect mix of each.
