About the Author
Bill Thompson was a book review editor, film critic and columnist, arts writer, and travel writer for the Post and Courier of Charleston, South Carolina, from 1980 to 2012. A graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a former sportswriter in Virginia and Florida, he has won numerous awards for his writing. In his retirement Thompson frequently reviews and writes for Kirkus Reviews, the Post and Courier, and Charleston Style and Design. He lives in Charleston.
South Carolina novelist Josephine Humphreys is the author of Dreams of Sleep (winner of the 1985 Ernest Hemingway Award for First Fiction), Rich in Love (made into a major motion picture), The Fireman's Fair, and Nowhere Else on Earth.

This is just the right book for casual reading by a book lover. You can skip back and forth through profiles of authors and interviews with authors and some book reviews. No need to read them in any particular order. This is a book for quiet nights and weekend reading.
There is a diversity of voices here. Thompson interviews a very wide range of authors, from Mickey Spillane (remember what a great big success he was in popular culture back in the '50s and '60s?) to Charles Frazier of "Cold Mountain" Pulitzer-winning fame to the authors who embody a Southeastern U.S. literary efflorescence. Because Thompson is an excellent journalist, the voices of the authors come through. You get to hear the lively idea-loving voice of Tom Wolfe, the down-to-earth remarks of mega-success fantasist Robert Jordan, the thoughtful musing of historian Shelby Foote and much more.
Thompson himself is a lively guide to fiction and nonfiction, though he does a very professional job of keeping himself in the background. He is the amused, amusing, irrepressible guide you want on a journey, in this case a journey through books. He wrote these profiles and interviews and reviews over decades from his post at a newspaper in Charleston, S.C. He is not provincial, but he takes advantage of the opportunities that presented themselves, and that means a treasury of interviews with writers of the Southeastern U.S.
I strongly recommend this book, so long as you have a wide-ranging interest in books.
