Excellent variety of tacos

Most of these recipes are pretty true to their Mexican roots, using classic Mexican chiles, herbs and seasonings matched with a wide variety of protein, vegetable and grain combinations. Sadly, there are no links to the recipes, so you'll want to bookmark any you find interesting, but that's a minor quibble in a 99 cent book.

Do your tastebuds a favor and where feta is indicated use Cotija cheese instead, except for the Greek tacos, of course. Where mayo or sour cream is used, buy some Mexican Crema. Both of these items are inexpensive and can normally be found right next to the Queso Fresco in the dairy section at Walmart. And don't waste your money on ready-made hard shells. They're an insult to a good taco. Their inclusion in the cover art made me cringe and I almost passed on the book despite it's low price. I'm glad I didn't.

The books are a fast read. This is a book suitable for all ages. My only desire would have been that it was less suitable for all ages. There were times when i was craving more detail around destruction and romance. Overall it was one of the best series I have read and would recommend it to everyone.

Fyodor Dostoevsky was the son of a doctor. His parents were hard-working, religious people, but poor. A brilliant career seemed open, but in 1849 he was arrested and condemned to death.

A member of a group of young men who met to read Fourier and Proudhon, he was accused of “taking part in conversations against the censorship … and of knowing of the intention to use a printing press.”

After eight months in jail, he was taken to be shot. Suddenly the prisoners were informed that His Majesty had spared their lives. His sentence was commuted to hard labor: four years of penal servitude in Siberia and some years in a disciplinary battalion.

In 1864 Dostoevsky lost his first wife and his brother. Though in terrible poverty, he paid his brother’s debts. The author wrote at tremendous speed and is said to never have corrected his work, which is evident in many books, especially Crime and Punishment.

In June 1880 he made his famous speech at the unveiling of the monument to Pushkin in Moscow and was received with great honor. A few months later he died and a vast multitude of mourners came to the cemetery.

He is still probably the most widely read writer in Russia. In the words of a Russian critic, “He was one of ourselves, a man of our blood and our bone, but one who has suffered.”

Great cookbook. Kids have raved about everything I've made ...

Great cookbook. Kids have raved about everything I've made from it so far. There's a ton of recipes. Each one is fairly simple, but has a twist that makes the meal stand out. Case in point the recipe that's cooking in my slow cooker at home right now, which spices up a garlic-honey-soy sauce with Parmesan cheese, which really works. I like it too that the recipes come from ordinary cooks around the country: the recipes really do come pretested in a home context, which is what I need when making dinner. Oh, and the book is really pretty--glossy paper, nice photographs. Wins all around.

Handy Dandy Slow Cooker Cookbook

I've never been disappointed by a Taste of Home cookbook yet...and this one is no exception. I've been on the hunt for a decent slow cooker cookbook and this one is terrific! It's broken into the four seasons, with appetizers, side dishes, main courses, soups/sandwich fixings, and desserts for each season. There are recipes for all sizes of slow cookers, from 3 quart up to 6 quart, while some of the recipes are pretty simple (with only a few ingredients), while others require a bit more time and work. There are also a lot of full color, wonderful pictures.

If I was going to give someone a slow cooker as a gift, this is the cookbook I'd include with it, hand's down!

I always love Taste of Home cookbooks. I also love slow cooker recipes, so this is a perfect combination. I have already used a few of the recipes and they have turned out very tasty.

Love Story

I've never been a fan of historical fiction until I found this book by Alison Butler. This is historical fiction like no other. Laid against the backdrop of a small fishing village in coastal Scotland in the 1700s, we have a love story that would rival Romeo and Juliet. Can you imagine a love so strong that you would sacrifice your family, your freedom, your dignity and your very life for a forbidden lover? Can you imagine a love so strong that you would go to the gallows for the young man of your dreams?

Maggie Dickson was a few centuries ahead of her time. She was a bonny lass who would be mastered by no man, not her father, not her husband, not her son, nor any of the men who fell in love with her. No, she would be mastered by no man, not until she met the one she couldn't have, the innkeeper's son, then she gave her life for him. Or did she?

Based on immaculate research and the true story of a hanging gone wrong, The Hanging of Margaret Dickson is a must read.

Wonderful Story

I approached this story thinking I knew the rough background to the legend of Half Hangit Maggie, but Alison Butler has done a simply wonderful job of adding flesh, blood and bones to the story. Her writing breathes life into a fantastic array of characters who bring real colour and drama to the book, and it is easy to lose yourself in the rich reek of the harbour at Musselburgh as fishwives clean their catch amid the jumble of creels and nets, or the heady stink of Edinburgh where thousands live cheek by jowl in a city with little or no sanitation.
I found myself being drawn deeper and deeper into the story by the skilful use of fact and fiction to create a satisfying whole. Butler's research and deep love of the story shines through and adds real depth to the book along with a plethora of details which just adds to the overall picture. Wonder no more why women go out on Hen Nights before their weddings! Or why sailors don't wish to be between the Devil and the deep blue sea!
From Maggie's childhood, teenage years and her marriage, at the age of 17 which brings more disappointment than pleasure for the headstrong Maggie we follow her life through it's ups and downs. It is her undoubted desire to enjoy the finer things in life which leads her into flirtations with prostitution but through it all she always finds herself going back to her husband. It is to Butler's credit that she still manages to have you rooting for Maggie despite her wilful and wild ways that could so easily have made her a deeply unlikeable character.
Even though the book is moving towards the inevitable date with the gallows of the Grassmarket you find yourself hoping that somehow Maggie will mend her ways. Unfortunately, history cannot be changed and the descriptions of the Tolbooths in Kelso and Edinburgh will leave you scratching yourself at the image of bodies crawling with filth and lice and chained in unlit, stinking cells.
18th Century Scotland lives and breathes through the pages of this book. From the stink of the midden to the tantalising aroma of French perfume this a book which fills your senses, and like a rich broth leaves you satisfied.
Bravo to Alison Butler for a job well done.

About the Author
Marie Émile Maurice Leblanc est un écrivain français né le 11 décembre 1864[1], à Rouen, et mort le 6 novembre 1941, à Perpignan. Auteur de nombreux romans policiers et d’aventures, il est le créateur du célèbre personnage d’Arsène Lupin, le gentleman-cambrioleur. On peut visiter la maison de Maurice Leblanc, à Étretat, dans la Seine-Maritime. L’aiguille d’Étretat forme d’ailleurs l’un des décors du roman L'Aiguille creuse. Biographie : Maurice Leblanc est le deuxième enfant d'Émile Leblanc, armateur de trente-quatre ans, et de Mathilde Blanche, née Brohy, âgée de vingt et un ans. Il eut pour sœur cadette la cantatrice Georgette Leblanc, qui fut l'interprète de Maurice Maeterlinck et sa compagne de 1895 à 1918. Il refuse la carrière que son père lui destine dans une fabrique de cardes et « monte à Paris » pour écrire. D’abord journaliste, puis romancier et conteur (Des couples, Une femme, Voici des ailes), il éveille l’intérêt de Jules Renard et d'Alphonse Daudet, sans succès public. Il fréquente les grands noms de la littérature à Paris : Stéphane Mallarmé ou Alphonse Allais. En 1901, il publie L'Enthousiasme, roman autobiographique. En 1905, Pierre Lafitte, directeur du mensuel Je sais tout, lui commande une nouvelle sur le modèle du Raffles d'Ernest William Hornung : L'Arrestation d’Arsène Lupin. Deux ans plus tard, Arsène Lupin est publié en livre. La sortie d’Arsène Lupin contre Herlock Sholmès mécontente Conan Doyle, furieux de voir son détective Sherlock Holmes (« Herlock Sholmès ») et son faire-valoir Watson (« Wilson ») ridiculisés par des personnages parodiques créés par Maurice Leblanc. Perfect for learning a new language! Fun to listen to, quality audio, sound effects... all great. I wish there were more similar products or more from the same series on amazon. This is a worthwhile purchase. I would definitely recommend.

This is some kind of reprint done in U.S., not France. Many words not properly separated. They run together.

We are heavy salad eaters around our house. Playing around with different salad dressing recipes is not only fun, but healthy. This book aims to teach 50 different recipes, that you can follow completely or tweak to your tastes.

I love that this book builds a foundation recipe that is great tasting by itself, but also fun to play with by adding or taking away the ingredients it calls for. We have utilized each one, and loved them all.

A lot of times a recipe book will okinclude a few you love, and more you can do without. This book has recipes that are all enjoyable, and we use them very regularly. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is salad eaters occasionally, all the way to every now and then. Great read! I was offered this product free in exchange for my honest and unbiased evaluation.

I absolutely love this guide to making my own fresh dressings! I don't limit these for just salads either, some of these recipes are excellent as a marinade or for pasta salads. I already have a few favorites, but I truly intend to try all 50!

A Sloppy Effort By Someone Who Doesn't Know Much About Vegan Cheese

I can guarantee that these authors have never made vegan cheese, although they pretend that they have. They make a crucial, basic error: "1/2 cup nutritional yeast flakes (you can find them under the name "brewer's yeast" in stores)" and "Note: for those who are interested in a "cheesier" taste, you can add 2-3 tablespoons of brewer's yeast to strengthen/enhance the taste".

Nutritional yeast and brewer's yeast are NOT the same product! Nutritional yeast has a creamy, 'cheesy' taste but brewer's yeast is extremely bitter. If they had truly made the cheese recipe mentioned above, and added brewer's yeast, they would have discovered their error because it would have tasted a-w-f-u-l! Some manufacturer's claim to have removed some of the bitterness but brewer's yeast tastes more like molasses than cheese and won't add a cheesy flavor to anything.

There are so many more mistakes in this manuscript that it's hard to know where to start.

* The Vegan Basil Pesto Cheese has no basil listed in the ingredients?
* One recipe has ingredients and directions, but no title at all - perhaps two of the recipes are this way; the whole book is so confusing I'm not certain?
* Another page begins with "cheesy flavor, and good for people ..." but it's not clear what they're referring to?
* The grammar is awful: "3/4 cup of soaked of cashews" or add an ingredient to "takes" - I assume they mean "taste"?
* Some recipes use standard American measurements like cups, teaspoons, etc; others use European measurements like milliliters and grams; and some use both. Unless you're comfortable with both systems you will have to stop and do some translation?

There are other minor errors that aren't really important, but they do speak to the lack of caring of the authors. For instance, in some titles, all the words are capitalized while in other recipes, some words are capitalized while others are in lower case. Or, they switch back and forth between "/" and "\". These are trivial points but they speak volumes about quality. Save your time and money and buy a book from someone who actually knows what they're talking about, like The Uncheese Cookbook by Joanne Stepaniak.

Badly written and formatted.

Writer uses the terms 'brewers yeast' and 'nutritional yeast' interchangeably and they are NOT the same thing. One recipe calls for ONE cup of nuts and FOUR cups of olive oil to make cheese. That's not gonna work!

Not worthy of keeping -- too many problems.

This is a really weird book with all the formatting problems, pictures with a big red "X" in them and "Ditching Diary Has Never Been Easier" which tells me the translator/editor needs to be fired. "Diary" is NOT "Dairy" in any language. I won't repeat the same problems others have identified. Suffice it to say this one is going right out the Kindle Window. Needs a major overhaul and re-issue to be a real book.

Not only did I not get the corrected and revised copy, I have now discovered that these recipes and pictures all came off Internet sites and Riki Berko never prepared one of these. In order to disguise this theft of recipes off the Internet, he changed the original statement "Whisk in the tapioca flour." to "Shuffle in the tapioca flour." How do you shuffle tapioca flour -- by the teaspoon, mixing spoon, spatula or a whisk as the original recipe stated. These recipe rip-off cut and pasters think this covers their theft but it doesn't. All the quantities are the same, all the directions are in the same order with the same times and almost all of the words exactly the same (except when they change "Whisk" that makes sense to "Shuffle" that doesn't make sense) so they are derivative and a violation of copyright law.

Why would anyone want to buy from a thief?

About the Author

Alfred de Musset (1810-1857) was a French poet, playwright, and novelist. He was born in Paris to a well-to-do family and turned to writing after first studying to be a doctor. Influenced by Lord Byron and Shakespeare, he fraternized with many great French writers such as Victor Hugo. He died in 1857 of a heart malfunction.

Yoshioki Oozeki is the Chief Scientist of the Fish Ecology Section, National Research Institute of Fisheries Science, Fisheries Research Agency, Japan, and Professor of Marine Life Science at the Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology. He is a fisheries biologist with expertise in the larval biology and ecology of small pelagic fish, and has lead the egg and larval survey project in waters around Japan for 12 years. He has also investigated larva physiology, database management, stock assessment, sampling gear technology, and variation of fish in relation to climate. He received the Uda Award from the Japanese Society of Fisheries Oceanography in 2007.

This is a great cookbook, one for moms and dads with little time. It also makes a fine present. My nephew found it useful when he was in college. No muss, no fuss. Cooking made easy. My daughter had a child since this cookbook was originally published. She doesn't use paper cookbooks anymore. Can't wait to tell her about the e-version.

Love, love, love the idea of making quick recipes in muffin tins. So far, my fav is the easy "monkey bread," but if you like savory things ... you'll find plenty of ideas. This book would make a great graduation or wedding shower gift. If if you know someone who is just learning to cook, these recipes are NOT intimidating the way so many others are.

It was a gift for my daughter who picked up the "muffin tin" trail after being intrigued by the variety of ideas presented in the March Food Network magazine. Ms Sember does an excellent job with basic recipes as a foundation then leaps into very gourmet meals using simple muffin tins in all sizes.
