About the Author
William Shakespeare was born in April 1564 in the town of Stratford-upon-Avon, on England s Avon River. When he was eighteen, he married Anne Hathaway. The couple had three children an older daughter Susanna and twins, Judith and Hamnet. Hamnet, Shakespeare s only son, died in childhood. The bulk of Shakespeare s working life was spent in the theater world of London, where he established himself professionally by the early 1590s. He enjoyed success not only as a playwright and poet, but also as an actor and shareholder in an acting company. Although some think that sometime between 1610 and 1613 Shakespeare retired from the theater and returned home to Stratford, where he died in 1616, others believe that he may have continued to work in London until close to his death.

I can't recommend this edition enough ! You will thoroughly enjoy this great work ! From cover to cover you will be up reading till its finished finally putting it back on the shelf is like leaving an old friend. All of his works have been amazing !

Fun and Engaging, but Needs Some Work

My kids love being in the kitchen. They tend to be creative kids, and cooking plays a part in that as well. Every time I'm planning meals or in the kitchen, they want to be involved. So of course, this cookbook played right into what these kids enjoy.

We loved flipping throw this cookbook. It's laid out in a logical manner, working through the day, and I love that each recipe includes a color photo. With kids, it's so nice to visualize what you're working toward. Also the recipes really are kid friendly. Not only are they something that my kids would want to eat, but they also include simple ingredients for when you've got a lot going on.

My only negative about this cookbook is that I'd like to see a kid friendly book that is geared toward a healthier lifestyle. A lot of these recipes included ingredients like tater tots or refrigerated biscuits. And while those items occasionally make an appearance on our table, I'd like to find a kid's cookbook that is more about fresh items and less about packaged junk.

Is this a well made cookbook? Yes. It's it bright, fun, and engaging? Yes. Could it be geared toward a healthier lifestyle? This one has some work to do.

All in all, a well made book with fun recipes, but needs to be balanced with a healthier lifestyle and view of food.

An Adorable Cookbook For Kids

I'm sure most adults recall reading at least one Berenstain Bear book during their lifetime. While many children's literature characters come and go, The Berenstain Bears has been entertaining young readers since 1962. Sadly, the original authors, Stan & Jan Berenstain, have both passed away, but their son, Mike, has taken over the franchise by writing and illustrating new installments.

Available now in bookstores is The Berenstain Bear' Country Cookbook, which features 40 cub-friendly cooking with an adult. The hardcover book is divided into four sections - Breakfast, Lunch, Main Dishes and Desserts & Snacks. Before each section is a short introduction from The Berenstain Bears.

Breakfast recipes includes: Bear-ry Delicious Scones, Bunny Biscuits, Bear-y God Oatmeal, Crepes with Berries, Tasty Toboggans, Fruit Salad, Monkey Bread, Sausage & Tater Tot Wraps, Scotch Eggs and Toast With Eggs & Cheese.

Lunch recipes includes: Banana & Peanut Butter Sandwiches, Creamy Chicken Noodle Soup, Crustless Tuna Sandwiches, Lettuce Wraps, Mini Pizzas, Spinach Salads, Shepherd's Pie, Sub Sandwich, Tomato & Bacon Quiche and Turkey Shaped Sandwiches.

Main Dishes recipes includes: Bear-y Good Mac & Cheese, Corn on the Cob, Easy Enchiladas, Green Noodle Lasagna, Grilled Chicken with Carrots, Meat & Potato Kabobs, Chicken Quesadillas, Red Bean, Sausage & Rice, Skilled Fried Potatoes and White Chicken Chilli.

Desserts & Snacks includes: Applesauce, Banana Pops, Blu-beary Pie, Cola Cake, Candied Pretzels, Coconut Nest with Fruit, Honey Hunt Cookies, Mug Brownies, Panda Cupcakes and Race Car Cookies.

Too many parents get their kids' meals at fast-food places, so I think it is great that Mike Berenstain has created this cool cookbook for children as it is a great way to get both kids and parents to make their own meals. There are cute little illustrations featuring Papa, Mama, Brother, Sister and Honey Bear and photos of each recipe. At the back of the book there is a "Grace Before Meals" page, "Sweet Facts About Honey" page and two pages about Kitchen Measurements. There are several cute recipes throughout the book, but my favorite is the last one, "The Race Car Cookies," which I'm sure it will get the attention of any kid. Overall, The Berenstain Bears' Country Cookbook is an adorable cookbook that both children and adults will enjoy.

I have loved The Berenstain Bears since I was young. With the new Living Lights series, there have been some that weren’t my favorite, but I have stuck with them and have overall been pretty pleased. I was excited when I saw the The Berenstain Bears' Country Cookbook: Cub-Friendly Cooking with an Adult (Berenstain Bears/Living Lights). I can picture my mom and I having this book when I was younger and making recipes from it.

I liked that there are recipes for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and dessert. I do think it would have been nice to have a snack section as well. I think this would have made this cookbook a little better.

If you have read any of my other cookbook reviews, you should know that I love having photos of every food item. I was really, really happy that this cookbook had that! It seems like there are so many cookbooks that don’t do this, so I was really happy to see this. I would have liked some of the pictures to be a little more engaging, but I was very happy to see all of the photos.

The different sections began with an attempt of a story with the Bear Cub family. Most of this “story” was pretty good, but I think it was lacking. I think there could have been a little more story to make this an even better cookbook.

There were a number of recipes in here that I want to try. I was disappointed by the fruit salad recipe. I thought this was a little bit of a cheap recipe and the watermelon in the photo didn’t look very good.

Some of the recipes that really stood out to me were ones that look like different animals including scones in the shape of a bear head and panda cupcakes. Overall I found a lot of really cool items in this cookbook. I think there could have been some more healthy items, but I could see my family using this and I’m excited to try a lot of the recipes.

What a great idea for a recipe collection

What a great idea for a recipe collection!

I've read through most of the recipes already and plan to try at least a couple of the thin crusts and sauce recipes, in the near future. Restaurants DO have their own ways of doing things, including maximizing flavors and keeping down costs at the same time. These recipes are definitely adaptable for the home kitchen though.

I was curious how the author was able to obtain so many of these commercial recipes? Usually companies are rather secretive about things like this. I didn't find any mention of this in the book on first browse through it.

I'm taking off one star as some of the formatting needs adjusting. Having huge lettering that doesn't fit properly on title pages cheapens the presentation significantly.

Overall though, definitely worth a look if you love to make and eat pizza.

Not at all the best book for beginners.

I hate to say this, but I have serious reservations about this book. I’ve been canning for years and so I know I’m not the intended audience for this book, however, that is what scares me most.

While I think it’s great to inspire people to can, because it really isn’t that hard and can be great in emergencies and for saving money, it is vitally important to cover the basics of food safety, especially in a book intended for beginners. This book, however, contains no mention of the dangers that come with canning, namely food poisoning.

For example, there’s no mention in this book about the difference between water bath and pressure canners and why and when one might use one versus the other (note: it’s about the acidity of foods). And yes, there’s some dispute among canners regarding the need for pressure canners, mostly along the lines of, “My mother only used a water bath canner and canned everything and we survived,” but to not even cover it? Questionable at best. And to not even mention that you should really sterilize your jars? Hm. Everything you need to can? Not really. Not at all.

Another thing that strikes me about this book is how brief it is and how few actual recipes are in the book. If you’ve canned before and know about food preserving, you know that it’s critically important to have a recipe that factors in the correct acidity levels for safety reasons. You can’t just say, “Make sure you throw in something acidic like lemon juice or vinegar,” and hope for the best.

Also, there were some odd lines in this book. For example, “You may have heard of dried mangoes or dried pineapple, but surprise, surprise; there’s also such a thing as dried tomatoes.” Are there really people who are surprised by dried tomatoes or who would know about dried mangos and not dried tomatoes? It just struck me as a really odd comment, and that, along with other comments, almost made me think that this book was ghost written by someone in another country.

The book is an odd collection of beginner tips, scattered recipes, mentions of recipes that aren’t in the book, and references to things you *can* do, but no information about *how* to do them. For example, the book says, “It is known that hanging peppers by the door will allow them to stand the test of time.” What does that mean? How do you hang them? How close to the door, and why does hanging them by the door preserve them?

I wanted to like this book because I love canning and preserving. But if you’re looking for a true beginner’s guide to canning and preserving, look at the Ball Blue Book or go to the FDA web site. There are *safe* recipes for beginners, and you’ll actually learn how to can properly and safely.

This book is very informative with simple easy to follow instructions

This book is very informative with simple easy to follow instructions. It explains what you will need to have before you start canning which is helpful so you don't get caught in the middle of preserving something and realize you do not have all the supplies necessary. The directions are easy to follow and understand. I plan on having a vegetable garden this year and this book will be very helpful when I have extra vegetables I want to preserve for the winter. I received this book at a discounted price in exchange for an hones review.

Wonderful recipes and tips for everyone wanting to get into canning.

Canning is no longer for generations past. A great way to save money, have foods that are peak of the season during off seasons as well as versatility for planning ahead. This book is a good for beginners or those familiar with the process looking for tips and new recipes. The book addresses so many things that can be canned/jarred like jams, jellies, preserves, pickles as well as salsas and relishes. The jelly section even teaches two different ways to check if there is enough pectin in your product to make a good jelly texture. You can use either the alcohol test or jel meter test which are both addressed in this book. Samantha Michaels does a good job also of explaining how pickling is full of probiotic microbes and healthy bacteria and how the process happens.
Not only are the recipes in this book good for fruits and vegetables but there are great tips on dry goods as well as nuts and nut butters. There is also another section that goes into detail about the importance of seasonal canning and tips for beginners on everything from types of produce that is best for what method to what tools are needed to complete this process.
An added section to the book is how to store meat, dairy and eggs for the best long term results. It is great to learn about the different methods needed to start building my cupboards for when times are harder, but also to help avoid chemicals and processed foods and turn to a more self sustainable way of living. I highly recommend this book for anyone doing research on canning and preserving and learning new tricks to the trade.

The play is set in the court of Malfi (Amalfi), Italy 1504 to 1510. The recently widowed Duchess falls in love with Antonio, a lowly steward, but her brothers, not wishing her to share their inheritance and desperate to evade a degrading association with their social inferiors, forbid her from remarrying. She takes Bosola into her confidence, not knowing that he is Ferdinand’s spy, and arranges that he will deliver her jewellery to Antonio at his hiding-place in Ancona. She will join them later, whilst pretending to make a pilgrimage to a town nearby. The Cardinal hears of the plan, instructs Bosola to banish the two lovers, and sends soldiers to capture them. Antonio escapes with their eldest son, but the Duchess, her maid, and her two younger children are returned to Malfi and, under instructions from Ferdinand, die at the hands of Bosola’s executioners. This experience, combined with a long-standing sense of injustice and his own feeling of a lack of identity, turns Bosola against the Cardinal and his brother, deciding to take up the cause of “Revenge for the Duchess of Malfi”

About the Author
Dr John Webster is Emeritus Professor in Animal Husbandry at the University of Bristol, UK. Amongst his many achievements, Professor Webster was recently awarded an honorary degree by the Royal Veterinary College for his research in animal science, as well as the Universities Federation for Animal Welfare (UFAW) Medal for Outstanding Contributions to Animal Welfare. He established the Animal Welfare and Behaviour Group at the University of Bristol, one of the largest and most highly-regarded of its kind in the world, and was a founder member of the Farm Animal Welfare Council which pioneered the Five Freedoms for farm animals.

A superb play

Of the "popular" editions of this play that by John Russell Brown (Revels Student Editions) and Elizabeth Brennan (New Mermaids) are both useful, though it must be said that no edition as yet does adequate justice to Webster's compexity - notably his presentation of Ferdinand. The play is both a tour de force and profoundly searching. It is perhaps the first major feminist play in England, with the Duchess presented as an outstandingly noble even if fallible character, the victim of her two evil "partriarchal" brothers. Of these, her twin brother Ferdinand is among the most intelligently conceived characters to appear on the Jacobean stage. Unknowingly (i.e. in his "unconscious") he is incestuously in love with his sister. Unable to cope with this "taboo" feeling, he tries to "repress" it unsuccessfully, and finally his ... "libido" comes to express itself in a violent wish to destroy her if he cannot ... own her, and he ends up believing himself to be a wolf, attempting to dig up her grave after he has had her killed. Obviously, then, this is a very Freudian work - anticipating Freud's insights brilliantly by some four centuries, and without lapsing into Freud's extravagantly improbable claims about such matters as the Oedipus complex. It is the working of the unconcious, as a reservoir of what we do not understand and cannot control, which is quite central in this play, and Ferdinand's ... confusion is potently contrasted with his sister's openminded, acknowledged and generous ... health. A violent psychosexual play

John Webster's play "The Duchess of Malfi" is a violent play that presents a dark, disturbing portrait of the human condition. According to the introductory note in the Dover edition, the play was first presented in 1613 or 1614.
The title character is a widow with two brothers: Ferdinand and the Cardinal. In the play's opening act, the brothers try to persuade their sister not to seek a new husband. Her resistance to their wishes sets in motion a chain of secrecy, plotting, and violence.
The relationship between Ferdinand and the Duchess is probably one of the most unsettling brother-sister relationships in literature. The play is full of both onstage killings and great lines. The title character is one of stage history's intriguing female characters; she is a woman whose desires lead her to defy familial pressure. Another fascinating and complex character is Bosola, who early in the play is enlisted to act as a spy. Overall, a compelling and well-written tragedy.

Not the best edition

First off, I don't see any substance to the other reviewer's accusation of plagiarism. Having compared Brown's and Marcus's notes, the substance generally differs. Even the example the other reviewer cites varies enough that I don't think there's justification for the accusation. Whatever problems this edition has, I don't think that Marcus's ethics should be impugned.

That said, I don't think this is a very good edition. Despite all the helpful information, the introduction is indeed disorganized and confused, the textual analysis does indeed indulge in conspiracy theories, and the textual editing is suspect (some phrases are left capitalized for no good reason, stage directions have been altered to favor particular interpretations, etc.). The notes tend toward help with the "materialist" aspects of the play while ignoring thematic and character content. If you want to know every little detail about the food, medicine, architecture, and politics of Renaissance England, even if they have only the most tangential relation to the content of the play, this is the edition for you. If you want notes on language, poetry and poetic allusion, and interpretation, this edition is vastly inferior to John Russell Brown's revised Revels edition The Duchess of Malfi: By John Webster, 2nd Edition (Revels Plays). Brown even finds some medical references that Marcus misses. Many of Marcus's interpretive notes are unilluminating paraphrases of the text, while Brown plumbs its ambiguities.

As for feminism, Christina Luckyj and Suzanne Gossett, among others, have excellently folded in feminist criticism into their editions of plays. Marcus simply is not as good a scholar as them or Brown.

I'd also avoid Brian Gibbons' New Mermaids edition, which is sparse and superficial. Stick with Brown's, revised in 2009.

Aside from my own short story in this collection, for which I will not assess any review, the other fiction selections exhibit the skill of the writers and their desire to explore difficult issues. A good survey of writers in the Piedmont region of Virginia. The caliber of writers from the Charlottesville are only gets better and better.

Not so Mediterranean

I love to cook and I struggle with my weight and I love the Mediterranean diet concept - and I eat that way normally. So I was looking at this cookbook for some great new ideas and recipes and perhaps even some tricks for making the diet more effective. Unfortunately I did not think the diet was right on target. The first recipe, for an omelet, called for egg whites or egg replacments - not quite whole foods, in my opinion. And snacks on one day was "flax seeds". And on another day, "chia seeds" Not a particularly palatable snack - I am thinking I would certainly lose weight if that was my only choice of a snack food (likely I would just cheat). Another concern from the two week diet plan: the focus on fruit juices instead of on whole fruit. My understanding is that, whenever possible, whole, unadulterated fruits and vegetables were encouraged. Eat the apple, not the apple juice.

But wine for lunch? Ok, I will embrace that! At least on the weekends. And the stuffed chicken recipe looks pretty good.

However, throughout the Mediterranean region, bread is eaten plain or dipped in olive oil — not eaten with butter or margarine, which contains saturated or trans fats.
Nuts are another part of a healthy Mediterranean diet. Nuts are high in fat, but most of the fat is healthy. Because nuts are high in calories, they should not be eaten in large amounts — generally no more than a handful a day. For the best nutrition, avoid candied or honey-roasted and heavily salted nuts.

This book starts with a thorough introduction of the mediterranean diet and simplifies the diet into 12 easy to follow tips (including drink some wine!). The approach is easy to follow and not intimidating at all. There are even tips on how to get kids to eat healthier and how to stock your pantry and fridge to be ready for the diet. The book is broken into Fish, Dessert, Legumes, Meat, Pasta/Rice/Bread, Poultry, Salad, Snack, Soup, Vegetables. And there are 2-3 recipes in each section. The recipes are mostly easy to follow and focus on fairly common ingredients. The snack section was entirely smoothies, which was a little disappointing. And I didn't see any recipes for tangines- I love a good tangine!

There were some things I didn't like. I wish there were pictures of the recipes and more recipes. The pictures are all in the background portions of the book. The meal plan seems to include a lot of juice, which really isn't recommended, especially if you want to lose weight.. The weight loss plan is for 2 weeks, and then they give you a plan if you haven't met your weight loss goal yet. This just seems needlessly negative. Unless you're trying to lose 4 pounds or less, you probably shouldn't meet your goal in 2 weeks. The formatting on the kindle isn't the best. Each photo has a caption that's repeated twice. There are blank sections where I'm not sure if the text is missing or if there are just some extra page breaks. And the book would have benefited from a quick pass by an editor- it's a bit clunky in places and the occasional word is missing or misspelled. Nothing you can't work around.
