About the Author

Jonathan Humble is a deputy head teacher in a rural school in Cumbria. He’s worked as a painter, lettuce picker and power industry engineer. Other than writing poetry and short stories, his hobbies include beard growing, pointing at poppies whilst saying “Oooo, they look nice!” and keeping the international coffee industry afloat with his patronage.

Originally from Goole in East Yorkshire, he occasionally writes under the pseudonym of Northern Jim and is rapidly establishing a reputation as the ‘go-to’ poet for fruit, sock and offal-based poetry. When asked about the intriguing title of his first collection of poems he replied “Can you ever have too many camels?”

His poetry has appeared in numerous publications and on radio. He appears regularly at Verbalise in The Brewery Arts Centre, Kendal and at other performance poetry venues in the North West of England.

Jonathan was appointed as the Tripe Poet Laureate by the UK Tripe Marketing Board in 2014.

About the Author
Renee Sanders is a mom of three and a passionate foodie. Though becoming a MasterChef was her childhood dream, her corporate job at one of the world’s largest tech companies gave her very little time to pursue her passion. However, she was forced to look into her eating habits when she got diagnosed with hypertension at the age of 32. That’s when she decided to take stock of her diet and adopt a healthy lifestyle. She started intensively researching the various types of diets, their nutritional values and cooking methods. Due to her commitment, she brought down her blood pressure to the normal range within 3 months! Renee now works from home and cooks everyday for her family. The appreciation she got from her kids and the benefits of eating nutritious home-cooked food has motivated Renee to start sharing her tried and tested recipes with the world through her cookbooks.

PLEASE DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY

Second worst cookbook I have ever purchased, the worst being her Dash Diet for Vegetarians. Obviously I purchase them both at the same time, or I would have saved half my money.

There is no nutritional information on the recipes, not even the number of servings you can expect.

Clearly no one proof read this cookbook or the other one put together by the same author.
Below are some of the pearls of wisdom you will read on the pages of this book, all direct quotes.
Since she cuts and pastes nutritional guidelines from her firsts book, the same information can be found in this book too:

Page 4: “4-5 servings per day of nuts and seeds like peanuts, walnuts, sunflower seeds, almond etc are beneficial.”

Page 4: (in bold print) “Foods to be avoided” –“It is advised to reduce the food consumption of refined food grains that contain fats, added sugars and salts(sodium).” “Red meats, aerated sugary beverages and sweets like jelly, jam, sorbet, maple syrup etc should be avoided-not more than 5 servings per week.”

Page 11. “Saves time: Using is a slow cooker can be benefitted by saving lots of time and also involves healthy cooking.”

Page 11: “As the food cooks, it releases the steam which the lid of the crock pot starts captivating within it which in turns helps the food to be moist throughout the cooking process.”

Page 12: “The ingredients or the vegetables can be cooked thoroughly by adding enough spices to give the required amount of taste to the food.”
HUH? This type of advice/information appears to go on throughout the book.

The Dash diet is not a copywritten protected name, anyone can use. Clearly that is the case here.
As I said on my review of her first book, the disclaimer on the last page reads: “The writer does not advocate the use of any of the suggestions, diets and health programs mentioned in this book.” I think that sums it up PERFECTLY!

Not Worth the Money

As mentioned in other posts this book is poorly edited. There are many grammatical errors and confusing directions. The table of contents does not list the page number next to the recipe so you have to flip through the book till you find it.

This isn't apparent that these are vegetarian recipes only by how small it says "Vegetarian" on the front of the book. It doesn't say vegetarian in the description. Not happy with this. Also, it doesn't say that it is a small soft back book, not a hardback book.

Four years before there was a Roberto Rossellini in her life, Ingrid Bergman experienced a period of unexpected and intense happiness with Hungarian photographer Robert Capa. Their affair was conducted in Europe, where Bergman managed to keep it quiet from the press, her studio, and her husband, Petter Lindstrom, and it is only now gaining wide notice with the publication of this fictionalized biography. Robert Capa had achieved fame for his uncompromising and heroic photographs of the Spanish Civil War in the late 1930s, the Chinese resistance to the Japanese invasion in the early 1940s, and the Magnificent Eleven photographs he made of the D-Day landings in 1944.

Addicted to danger and exhilarated by the high drama of battle, Capa would seem, on the surface, to have little in common with the coolly elegant Ingrid Bergman, the Swedish Academy Award-winner famous for the subtlety of her acting performances and her quiet, lady-like demeanor. Nevertheless, these two people found solace with each other in the aftermath of the war, as each was alone and dealing with private demons. Capa, out of work at the war's end, was wandering Europe, drinking too much and gambling, while Bergman was traveling and entertaining the troops remaining in Europe. Long dominated and controlled by her husband of eight years, who managed her career and every aspect of her life, Bergman was able, on this trip, to feel complete liberation, and she discovers passionate love for the first time.

British author Chris Greenhalgh, creates a lively and unsentimental novel from what is known about the Bergman-Capa affair and the atmosphere which produced it, creating and then conveying details which make these two characters "real," as he explores their thinking and behavior over the course of their year-long affair. By alternating the points of view between the first person accounts of Capa, and the third person point of view of Bergman, which keeps her at a more discreet distance, Greenhalgh creates sympathetic characters who pursue their love. Their relationship becomes increasingly tense when they return to Hollywood. The overwhelming presence of Petter Lindstrom takes its toll on both lovers, and Capa, often drunk, begins to be indiscreet. Symbols arise as their relationship is tested.

History reveals the outcome of this relationship before the novel even starts, but this affair in 1945, Bergman's first, may have been most responsible for her emotional growth. Passionate and desperate in their need to escape the present, for a few months, at least, Ingrid Bergman and Robert Capa cannot help but recognize the inevitable outcome long before the curtain falls. The strength and the sense of finality with which the two lovers face the inevitable will stir even the most hard-hearted reader.

Only somewhat disappointed

After reading the previous review, I compared the three Shakespeare Calla editions last evening. Hamlet, with it's leatherette covered boards, sewn signatures and 85# paper, is a beautiful edition, even without color illustrations within. 2011 saw the release of A Midsummer Night's Dream, which offered illustrated cloth covered boards, continued America manufacture, very high production quality and added profuse color illustration throughout. Both of these books had illustrated end papers. The 2012 reproduction of Dulac's The Tempest is produced in China. The cloth on the boards is more coarse than that on A Midsummer Night's Dream, the end papers are not illustrated, but colored to complement the boards and the paper used in the book, while heavy and a pleasant ivory color, feels stiff. The signatures are sewn, and the book feels well made, but to me it seems that the production standards are just not quite as high.
Dover is to be commended for offering the Calla editions. These are wonderful books, and proof that digital media cannot truly replace the printed page. All of these releases offer a tactile experience in addition to the content within, and this points to the problem with the 2012 releases I've handled, including The Tempest. They just don't feel as nice. I'll continue to purchase Calla editions, but I fear that my satisfaction will wane as the production quality becomes more pedestrian.
I understand times change, but I would have preferred that the prices had increased more, the quality remained as high and, frankly, that the manufacture had remained in America. I have other 2012 releases, and they are of similar quality and sourcing. I saw Calla Editions as being about producing excellent books, not cutting corners to meet a price point. This edition of The Tempest is a lovely book, and I would have been thrilled with it but for the excellence and value that earlier Calla editions offered. Sic transit gloria mundi...

A nice Calla edition marred by a cheap binding...

I buy most of the Calla reprints of classic illustrated books and are impressed by the quality of most of them, but the more recent releases are not as nice as the first wave, and this edition of THE TEMPEST is bound in light purple textured paper essentially, and its just not going to hold up. Very disappointing. Printing and image reproduction quality is just fine though. Hope future volumes improve....

Excellent Publication/Version (Arden Shakespeare)

I looked long and hard (and asked many a scholar) for the "perfect" Shakespeare publication that I might purchase to study "King Henry V" (for a experiential education requirement, I had undertaken the translation of Henry V into American Sign Language). The Arden Shakespeare came highly recommended by everyone, and has lived up entirely to all its rave reviews.
I will never buy Shakespeare from another publisher. While these books may be slightly more expensive than a "mass market" edition, I believe that if you are going to take the time to read and understand Shakespeare, it is well worth the extra dollar or two. The Introduction, the images, and plethora of footnotes are irreplaceable and nearly neccessary for a full understanding of the play (for those of us who are not scholars already). The photocopy of the original Quatro text in the appendix is also very interesting.
All in all, well worth it! I recommend that you buy ALL of Shakespeare's work from Arden's critical editions.

Bravo to the Folger Library!

The good folks at the Folger have done a great service to all readers who have ever said, "You know, I think I would like Shakespeare better if I didn't have to contend with all those footnotes." The Folger editions have a page of the play's text on the right, while the footnotes and other applicable explanatory information are on the left hand page. I don't know exactly why that makes it easier to read and digest, but it does. Taking your eye across the page to find the footnotes is much easier and less disruptive than having to go up and down the page.

I have read a couple of these editions now, and reading Shakespeare is getting easier all the time. I give some credit to the essays that begin each book, which explains some of the quirks of Shakespeare's language. The essays are basically the same from play to play, but the specific examples in the essays are taken from whatever play is featured in that particular book. Make sure to read one in detail, but you can probably skim them when you read subsequent plays.

I also have to give a lot of credit to Kenneth Branaugh. After several viewings of his excellent productions, with their beautiful but nearly conversational tone, I have begun to grasp the rhythms and flow of Shakespeare's dialog. I also highly recommend Branaugh's film version of Henry V, if you want to read it and see it.

Henry V - An Intriguing, Contradictory Heroic King

Henry V remains today as the most heroic of English Kings. The battle of Agincourt in English legend engenders patriotic emotions the way that we Americans reflect upom Washington and his army at Valley Forge. Superb leadership overcomes great adversity.
While many scholars have not judged Henry V as one of Shakespeare's more successful plays, I found Shakespeare's portrayal of Henry V fascinating and intriguing, a complicated and contradictory character. With each rereading of Henry V, I value it more.
Was he indeed "the mirror of Christendom and the glory of his country" or a cruel, calculating king willing to risk the lives of his devoted followers? On one level Shakespeare portrays the former (particularly in the voice of the Chorus), but on another level he leaves me puzzled, unsure of Henry's motives.
In the first act we see two bishops manipulate Henry V for their purposes, but on closer reading we wonder whether Henry is actually manipulating the bishops to gain justification for war against France. Shakespeare's genius allows us to interpret events in a multitiude of ways, and we find ourselves rereading Henry V again and again to rethink our previous conclusions.
If you are new to Henry V, I highly recommend reading the Cambridge School Shakespeare edition. I particularly like its use of the "facing page" format with the Shakespeare on the right page and context information, explanations, and analysis on the left. It's a little more expensive, but you will find the slight increase in cost quite worthwhile.

Sugar decorations

I have a husband that loves cakes, so in time I learned how to prepare them. I am now taking everything the to next level, and creating sugar decorations to make his cake nicer every time. This book is a very helpful and useful guide on this matter as it proved to be really helpful in teaching me how to get to a stage where I can say I am proud of the way my cakes look like. Very practical, filled with advice and as well some very helpful pictures to guide me along the way, this is definitely a book that can help any cake get better.

On Genius and the Workings of the Creative Process

Nowadays, there is much discussion in the public domain on the concept of genius, on Creativity and on Innovation. We see people like Steve Jobs, Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos and many others being labelled as 'creative' or 'genius-like' or 'innovative'. At the same time, we do not see much elaboration on the precise reasons for marking these individuals out for such special mention except by reiterating the products and ideas for which they are responsible and how much their thinking diverges from the mainstream. What we don't find is a substantive discussion on what this 'Creative Process' really is and how it actually works and what its psychological foundations are. It is this quest which brought me to read this book.

I have always enjoyed reading Sudhir Kakar's insights into cultural psychology, mysticism and psychoanalysis. When I saw that he was one of the authors of this book, I wanted to see what his insight into the subject is. However, it turned out that this book is a collection of six essays on Creativity from six different authors, with Kakar contributing just one, on the Indian perspective of the creative artist. Three articles dwell on the cross-cultural views on Creativity, one each on the Indian, Western and the Chinese. Two others are in the inter-disciplinary perspective from Psychoanalysis and Neuroscience. The final article by James Kaufman looks at Creativity through a generalist approach. Overall, we come across many definitions on what is creative and some approaches to understanding the creative process itself.

The Western perspective is dealt with by co-author Günter Blamberger who suggests that the West has always set wrong priorities by focusing on the personal origin of Creativity , leading to hopeless aporias and myths. The West has a tradition of seeing Creativity as a triad of divine inspiration, mastery of the rules of the domain and scholarly knowledge. Blamberger proposes that we must bid farewell to this concept of 'Genius' and move away from singular creatorship and towards viewing Creativity as an Experience and as a Process. Today's creative practices are mostly processes based on division of labor within collectives and Creativity itself must be viewed as an inter-disciplinary and cross-cultural question.

Sudhir Kakar presents the Indian perspective on artistic creativity based on the classical treatise on the Performing Arts, namely 'Natya Shastra', written around 200 BCE, and on the modern works of renowned art historian, Ananda Coomaraswamy (1877-1947). In the Indian view of the creative artist, he is not a flawed being or prone to melancholia or madness. Rather, to be truly creative, it was necessary for individual personality traits and complexes to be transcended. Coomaraswamy formulates it as '..the Indian artist, though a person, is not a personality'. Creative Imagination is an inborn faculty due to impressions of past births that is so strong in the artist that it responds to the slightest stimuli which are usually ignored by others. Kakar wonders as to how many contemporary Indian artists share this view of the artist as emotionally balanced and artistic creativity as a matter of connecting with the transcendent, spiritual unconscious.

The Chinese perspective of Creativity is outlined by Weihua Niu simply as the very nature of everlasting interaction between the creator and the context, as something evolutionary rather than revolutionary. The focus of Creativity in the Confucian outlook is on novelty and appropriateness, where appropriateness is understood as fitting according to the changing context in a collaborative manner, given a specific situation. On the other hand, the Taoist view of Creativity is to make a connection between oneself and nature, possibly by immersing oneself through meditation.

In the inter-disciplinary discussion, I liked the essay by Margaret Boden on 'Creativity as Neuroscientific Mystery'. Boden says that there are three types of creativity, namely Combinational, Exploratory and Transformational. They are explained as follows:
Combinational Creativity is the generation of unfamiliar combinations of familiar ideas. A scientific example would be viewing the Atom through the Solar system model.
Exploratory Creativity is to use existing rules to generate novel structures. Examples would be to write a new Computer program using a known programming language or writing a new essay in English or creating a new painting in a known style such as Impressionist.
Transformational Creativity is the most exciting of all in that it breaks culturally sanctioned rules within a domain and leads to the creation of a novel idea which seems 'Impossible'. One can think of many examples in Science and in the Arts like Literature and Music.
Boden says that these three forms of Creativity involve different types of psychological processes and that Combinational Creativity is within reach of Neuroscience today. As for Exploratory and Transformational, she says that the human brain is a Connectionist system and we need to understand much better than we do today as to how 'connectionism' can emulate a von Neumann machine before coming to a Neuroscientific view of these two types of Creativity.
Most of us can probably feel good about having experienced some aspect of Exploratory Creativity in our lives and some might have indulged in Combinational as well.

As I came to the last essay in the book, the creative process still remained largely an enigma. Still, the essays provoke our mind and induces us to explore further.
