Great old world witch hunt

Eben Hollow has a great old-world horror feel to it, with its quaint village set next to a gnarled forest of dread, inhabited by a mythical goat-man who preys on those who stray from the path. There is also a nasty witch who is intent on extending her rule. Meanwhile the townfolk must make a living and raise their families. The town hero is The Elkmaster, who has pit himself as a holy soldier against the evil denizens of the forest.

The atmosphere is great here, and there is the everpresent suspense of the devil always lurking close at hand. The grisly methods of the witch and her henchman are fairly graphic, but the table is set in a battle of good vs evil. So far, evil has the upper hand. Can the Elkmaster and the good people of Eben Hollow prevail? The characters are very enjoyable, and everything is perfect, down to the speech of the characters. A fun read, for sure, and I wished it were longer.

Bravo. A very powerful and entertaining depiction of the "age old" theme of conflicting Good and Evil. The characters are complex and interact in a very interesting manner. Each character has a signifigant philosophy and energy that contributes to the overall story line and eventual outcome. The authors have successfully interwoven vivid background with energetic, sardonic and anectotal characters to reveal an interesting fabric with substance and encouragement for every real life challenge. This is a "must read". You will not be able to put this book down once you enter "The Village of Eben Hollow".

    May Be Worth Checking Out

    Some of the recipes in this collection sounded workable and quite tasty (I haven't actually tried any yet).

    I was a bit disappointed though to see a heavy reliance of protein powder being added to the recipes, throughout. I had hoped for at least a few that relied completely on whole foods as opposed to these powders. Yes, some protein powders are quite well balanced nutritionally but they still are a concentrated source of several types of ingredients. I always prefer using natural "whole" foods, in any recipes, if at all possible.

    worth a look though, if you prefer making your own meal replacement bars and shakes and don't mind the addition of protein powders.

    Though I wasn't very keen on meal replacements but my busy schedules and gaining fat day by day. I has to look for alternatives.     Not for beginners.

    This book is not for beginning fermenters. Several bits of fermenting information are missing in the ebook. There is no o mention of keeping foods submerged in the brine., no mention of brine either. Burping is also not talked about in this ebook. The least of my criticisms would be the lack of checking the spelling before the submission of this ebook.

    About the Author
    Born in London in 1939, Alan Ayckbourn spent most of his childhood in Sussex and was educated at Haileybury. Leaving there one Friday at the age of seventeen, he went into the theatre the following Monday and has been working in it ever since as, variously, a stage manager, sound technician, scene painter, prop-maker, actor, writer and director. These last two talents he developed thanks to his mentor, Stephen Joseph, whom he first met in 1958 upon joining his newly formed Studio Theatre Company in Scarborough. A BBC Radio Drama Producer from 1965 to 1970, upon the death of Stephen Joseph, he returned to Scarborough to become the company's Artistic Director. He holds the post to this day, though the theatre is now named after its founder. He is the author of over fifty plays, most of which received their first performance at this Yorkshire theatre, were he spends the greater part of the year directing other people's work. More than half of his plays have subsequently been produced in the West End, at the Royal National Theatre or at the RSC. They have been translated into over thirty languages, are seen on stage and television throughout the world, and have received many national and international awards. Alan Ayckbourn was appointed a CBE in 1987 and in 1997 became to first playwright knighted since Terence Rattigan. He lives in London.

    Quite Literally, I Laughed, I Cried

    This is hard play to describe. I'd call it something like a funny, heart-warming thriller. "Communicating Doors" is the story of a prostitute named Phoebe who is given the chance to save her own life and the lives of two other women when, fleeing a murderer through a communicating door, she finds herself unexpectedly twenty years in the past. This play made me feel a full range of emotions in three hours when I saw it in the theater, and reading it was almost as good. Ruella and Phoebe, the two main characters, are two of the most likable and complex people I've encountered recently in literature. It kept me laughing, and in suspense, right up through the final scene. I rarely give out five stars, but this play deserves it.

    I was completely won over by this play's clever mix of the comic, the fantastic, and the thrilling. It held me riveted until the very end and its main character (Poopay) was a delight. See a good production of it and you'll bound to end up an Ayckbourne fan.

    As If Jane Eyre Were Written by Shakespeare

    Having been brought up on the notion that Elizabeth Barrett Browning was the slighter and less-talented adjunct poet of her husband Robert, I was pleased to find I was wrong.

    She's terrific.

    This is a brilliant work, full of dazzling poetry and insights.

    It's loaded with allusions and references (I read the Penguin edition; and the notes there run for many, many pages--and these barely skim the surface), but it is remarkably accessible and fun.

    This is a work full of wisdom and unusual perspectives. Luminous and grand and down-to-earth all at once. Imagine Jane Eyre written by Shakespeare.

    It's an education in Victorian (upper-middle-class) England, and also the Victorian English infatuation with Italy. It's also a biting and incisive feminist portrait, full of rebellion and self-discovery.

    I strongly recommend it to anyone who likes poetry, or Victorian novels.

    An amazing achievement

    E.B.B. set out to outstrip Milton and does so in an amazingly original way. Aurora Leigh is a novel in blank verse that is actually longer than Paradise Lost! She combines the genre expectations for a woman writer--the novel--with an audacious bid for poetic immortality. The book tells a good story but it also works as a formidable reminder to her contemporary poets that the novel is taking over and poets must make sure that they are writing in the spirit of the age.

    Cynthia's book, Midwest Maize, is simply a masterpiece of descriptive writing. On every page, in fact, every paragraph, I was saying "I didn't know THAT!" And I grew up in the heart of the Minnesota Corn Belt -- but there was so much more to know, and it's in this book. You will like this book especially if: 1) you are a foodie, 2) you like history, 3) you are a chemist (like me) and like to see good science mixed with good writing, 4) if you appreciate good research, 5) you like a food made from corn (pop corn is well treated here!), 6) you think you know all there is to know about: the Mid West, Chicago, the railroads, Abraham Lincoln, hybrid corn, GMO, planting, farming, --- you get the idea.
    Well researched and heavily documented, you'll put this book on your shelf for re-reading. And you will have found the perfect gift for just about any occasion you can imagine!

These recipes were the staple of generations of mountain people. If you’re a novice to country cooking this cookbook will make learning easy; if you’re a seasoned veteran you’ll find new delights and insights for your storehouse of knowledge. And tucked here and there, you will find humor. This cookbook is meant to be a joy to read as well as a treasure trove of recipes. We sincerely wish you good reading, good cooking, and the best part, a well satisfied tummy. (Note: Last night I finished the final revisions of The Mountain Laurel Cookbook. It has taken much longer to get to this point than I anticipated. Proofing a cookbook is an odd combination of fun and torture. I have never been so hungry in my life! Reading all these recipes has kept me in a constant state of near starvation level hunger and my mouth has watered constantly since I began this project. This morning I have a big pot of pinto beans (page 174) slow cooking with a ham hock and my first Strawberry Songer (page 82) just came out of the oven, and the only way to describe it is ecstatic jubilation! My next project will be my mom’s Chocolate Pie recipe (page 85). After that, and a trip to the local Farmer’s Market, I’ll be canning some Squash Pickles (page 124). Charlotte and Susan always made the Chocolate Pie for me and this will be the first time I’ve made one by myself, but I’ll bet it will be delicious. Susan always made the Squash Pickles but after reading the instructions it will not be a problem and I can’t wait to get the first jar. I love those things! Tonight with my pinto beans I’ll be having Fried Cornbread (page 45 & 46) and a tall glass of milk and topping it off with Strawberry Songer. Tomorrow for breakfast I’m planning eggs over medium with the old style Mabry Mill Home Fries (page 146). Perhaps I’ll have the Red Potato Smash (page 146) with my warmed over pinto beans for supper tomorrow… Hmmm… Bob Heafner)

    A cookbook done right!

    A winner in cookbooks: told in a way that is just like talking to the author. I grew up during the Great Depression, and the Mountain Laurel Cookbook takes me back to a time when my mom cooked on a wood cook stove. She raised five boys and a husband, (so she said) using many of these recipes. (One small difference: she used a different recipe for 'possum.) If you remember, or if you've ever wondered how it was done back in the day, the book is well worth the money.

    Specialized Subject; Well Done

    This is a bit of an esoteric book on a very specialized subject. It has to be reviewed as such. It certainly does not match the quality of classics and books on "more important" subjects. But that is not what Attlee wrote about. What she DID write about was her passionate interest in citrus in Italy. She included interviews and information from a number of people involved in citrus in Italy. She even has some recipes from sources to which, I suspect, few may have access.

    For those who have an interest in this subject, her book is excellent. Those who have no interest in the subject shouldn't get it in the first place and certainly shouldn't give it a bad rating for doing what it does. What it does, it does quite well. Attlee speaks with love and personal interest about the history of citrus in Italy. I got the book because I actually had a specific need for a history of that industry in Italy — actually, in Sicily. Nonetheless, I also did have to research other books on the subject since I needed even more depth. I found myself enjoying some of her writing, not necessarily because I learned something on every page, though there is much to learn, but because it was interesting to follow the author on her journey to document so much about this. How someone could write so fully on the beauty and history of citrus in Italy seems to me to be a bit unusual. But she did a good job and deserves five stars for the lengthy personal research she did as she traveled the mainland Italy and Sicily. She clearly has a personal love for her subject and that always makes any book better. Although, I have not yet even finished the entire book, I have read most of it and feel fine about posting this review.

    For anyone interested in this very specialized topic — though I suspect that few in general readership are — I can recommend it and have no problem giving it a full five stars.

    Sweet and Tart

    Atlee has written a number of garden books, and conducts tours of gardens in Italy. Apparently, piqued by the private lemon groves she occasionally observed, she stretched out and wrote this book, which is the history of citrus in Italy.

    She does a good job of tracing the origins and spread of citrus throughout Italy. She includes the north where lemon trees have to be housed in lemonaria in the winter, excepting small microclimates along the coast and lake Garda. She travels to Sicily, touring the concha de oro near palermo, and the cultivation of blood oranges in the south. She also explains how the mafia came to control citrus production.

    I thoroughly enjoyed the book, which combines travel and food, including some recipes.
