This early work by Earl Derr Biggers was originally published in 1914 and we are now republishing it with a brand new introductory biography. "Love Insurance"sees Lord Harrowby come to Lloyds of London with a most unusual request for insurance. Knowing that Lloyds takes out policies on unusual risks, he requests insurance of a most unusual kind... love insurance. What follows is a comic novel of improbable dimensions, by the world-famous creator of Chinese detective Charlie Chan. Earl Derr Biggers was born on 26th August 1884 in Warren, Ohio, USA. Biggers received his further education at Harvard University, where he developed a reputation as a literary rebel, preferring the popular modern authors, such as Rudyard Kipling and Richard Harding Davis to the established figures of classical literature. Following in their footsteps upon graduating, he himself began a career as a popular writer, penning humorous articles and reviews for the Boston Traveler. While on holiday in Hawaii, Biggers heard tales of a real-life Chinese detective operating in Honolulu, named Chang Apana. This inspired him to create his most enduring legacy in the character of super-sleuth Charlie Chan. The first Chan story "The House Without a Key" (1925) was published as a serialised story in the Saturday Evening Post and then released as a novel in the same year. Biggers went on to write five more Chan novels and all were licensed for movie adaptations by Fox Films. These films were hugely popular with several different actors taking the lead role of Chan. Eventually; over 40 films were produced featuring the character. Biggers only saw the early on-screen successes of Charlie Chan due to his death at the age of only 48 from a heart attack in April 1933.

An Unexpected Delight--for Some
By Alan Buster
Opening this book is to step back to pre-World War One America-- not America as it was, but as it was portrayed on the stage. The author was a moderately successful playwright and, later, the creator of the fine Charlie Chan mystery novels. This novel, with the wild improbabilities of a P.G. Wodehouse tale, involves the efforts of a good-natured but feckless English nobleman who gets Lloyds to insure his planned marriage with an American heiress. The boss at Lloyds witlessly assigns a handsome young agent to see things through. Can you see where this is going? Well, really, no you can't. The nobleman, the heiress and the Lloyds agent--and a lot of other people-- all wind up in a thinly disguised version of St. Augustine, Florida, at the old Flagler Hotel, a piece of fantasy architecture you can still visit. The author is good at evoking the wealthy tropical milieu. Quite a number of films were adapted from this novel; in fact, the reader can slip easily into imagining it as a silent picture--with all the dialogue supplied. Biggers is a surprisingly good stylist; and though this is just a charming bit of fluff, it has some literary merit.

Lightweight froth - From the earliest days of screwball comedy
By Phred
Many years before he became famous for the Charlie Chan detective books; Earl Biggers was a somewhat successful author and playwright. In fact it would be the income from these pieces that made it possible for him to visit Hawaii where he would learn about the real Charlie Chan.
Love Insurance was his second successful novel and would be used more or less as the basis for many movies and plays. Given that this book is set in the era before the roaring 20s and in fact before World War I, this could easily be one of the first screwball comedies.
The basic plot of this book is built around the reputation the Lloyds of London insurance firm had for ensuring all manner of unlikely propositions. Even in recent years they were known for insuring actor's and actresses' legs, voices, and even plastic surgery. In this case a young impecunious titled Lord would sign a policy with Lloyds to ensure that his marriage to a young rich American would happen on time. One of the terms of this policy would be that his Lordship could take no action to scuttle the pending nuptials. To ensure the terms are honored the American office of Lloyd's posts one of their assistants to protect the insurer's interests. The lucky assistant chosen for this task is the young handsome fiercely loyal Minot. Our hero to be is, by the way single.
The wedding is set to take place in what was a then a barely emerging Florida tourist spot. And so our hero takes the takes the train to the remote wilds of Florida and in so doing meets and is fascinated by the young lovely Cynthia. Only after he is ensnared by her charms does he realize this is the woman whose wedding it is his job to guarantee. And so the mayhem begins.
At this point the book becomes something of a balancing act. Biggers manages to work in virtually every possible variation on wedding stoppers. Some readers may find he twists too numerous to credit. The point is that by having so many problems the plot is intentionally overloaded. That is part of the humor is the unlikelihood of so many complexities. For example: There are at least three variations on who has the rights to the title of our titled groom to be.
Along the way Biggers will use some of what would become typical elements of his later mysteries. For example we have a plot to steal a diamond necklace and a slow accumulation of a variety of people, some brought in for comedy, some brought in to further the plot and some just to keep the author juggling.
All's well that ends well and we all knew this would end well; you just could not have expected so many comedic twists.
Throughout the writing is light sophisticated in the manner of the day, and entertaining. Some will find the humor here dated. There is very little here to cause you to laugh uproariously. Even so this is a relaxing lightweight read. It is reflective of a time long gone in America and perhaps the result is that Love Insurance has a romantic appeal.

A happy youthful romp
By P R Trent (Woof)
Unlike his later mass-produced stories like Charlie Chan, this is a delectable romp which he must have really enjoyed writing. Biggers sounds here a little like Christopher Morley (e.g. Kathleen), only not so bookish. This is a sweet innocent tale which contains absolutely no violence, sex, or profanity. As such, it may seem too tame for "modern" readers. But if you like your heroines described as "a good many girls in one, and every one of them nice," then this is highly recommended to you. Enjoy !
