Great theme and compelling, satisfying reading
By Cy Wyss
Cyberbully blues is the coming of age story of Dakota (aka Kodi), a California girl. The book follows Kodi from just beginning high school to the first year of college as she makes major changes. The changes include transforming herself through hard work and self-discipline from couch potato to athlete, from mathophobe to computerophile, and from girl to woman. Her change from geometry dunce to math and computer science whiz is truly inspiring, not least in part because it is out of necessity due to rampant cyberbullying. Her response to her tormentors is creative and realistic, the author has a great feel for the nuances of all things tech. Another great aspect to the story is in fact this techno-awareness, as it is set 25 years in the future with the logical consequences of the tech we have today. Kodi is believable and the reader quickly finds her perseverance and self-discipline inspiring and compelling. We want her to win!
The book gets off to a relaxing start but by 30% I was hooked. By 40% I couldn't put it down it was so gripping. It is also impeccably edited, a potential pet peeve of mine. The author has dotted all the i's and crossed all the t's making for a smooth and seamless ride. I liked the advanced tech aspect being realistic, the realm of the eminently probable not the realm of science fiction. I also liked that the author didn't pull punches but instead put important computer concepts and even a snippet or two of code into the text (yet somehow managed to do this without seeming boring). I was disappointed to think that women wouldn't have made more inroads in the computer science field in 25 years, but given stupid crap like Gamergate this is also unfortunately realistic. Overall a very important story to have around, and heroes like Kodi and her mentors need to be better known. Highly recommended for a great theme and compelling, satisfying reading.

Great Inspiration to Young Females
By Lisa Yung
I see a huge improvement in the author’s writing. He takes up challenges and risks, which is notable. It is not easy to write in the perspective of a teenage girl considering the author is a middle-aged man. The novel’s pace is faster and there is much more dialogue between the characters compared to "Well-Oiled," his first novel. "Cyberbully Blues" also has a mystery theme but is it is easier to read. I feel the characters are more real in the sense that there is more depth to them. They have dark sides, secrets, and mysterious pasts which make them more relatable to people in the real world. Although I think Kodi, the main character, sounds a bit too mature for her age sometimes, at the same time, she could be one of those precocious and unconventional High School kids. There were a few times when I thought the novel was predictable but then I was proven wrong since it turned out different from what I expected. The second part of the novel is better because it’s when things start to really pick up.
Personally, I relate to Kodi in some ways because she grows up in a single parent household with no relatives around. Therefore, I understand her strong independence and her having to solve problems in life by herself. I find a lot of encouragement in Kodi because even though she faces many adversities at such a young age, she shows me what it really means to “keep on getting up.” Moreover, she displays true friendship, adding to the “human” side of the novel. This is a delightful contrast to the novel’s futuristic setting that is prevailed by technology and cyber- realities. Kodi is strong, perseverant, and serves as a great example to us all, especially to young females.

Good plot, lacking development
By rspadancer
3.5/5
First I want to mention that I definitely agree with other reviews who state that this is like a PSA or warning-book. It is. It reads like it also. But I appreciate the author writing in this way because it gets her point across obviously and sends a message to whoever reads it.
Pace: I think I was at about 27% and nothing had really happened. There's a lot of building up from her track to soccer career, the magazines, Bobby, and her father. A lot is thrown at you, but it's never really explained to the extent of being immersed.
World: Because this book is in 2032 I expected there to be some world-building. While it's not a fantasy novel exactly, by setting it in the future you have to do some work. And it completely lacked in this area. The holos weren't described. The technology wasn't exactly understandable and I think it has to do with my next point...
Setting: There is hardly any. I'm not sure there was a time when I could clearly picture what was happening. It definitely lacked descriptions for the majority of the book and then had a ton of description during sporting events which really didn't contribute to the plot. It felt off.
Plot: The by far strongest point of the novel. I enjoyed the actual story and the elements. While I think their execution at times fell flat, overall it was a story that needs to be told. I have to admit, I've never read a book like it and I think that's what made me keep reading.
I gave this book 3.5 stars. I liked it, but thought there were some areas that for me lacked and deterred from REALLY liking it. This is just my personal opinion. I would recommend the novel!
OH! And there's tons of logo/name dropping which is a turn-off for me. It almost felt forced by throwing in The Breakfast Club, Hogwarts and endless Harry Potter references, Magazine names, and way more.
