About the Author
Ann Gentry is a pioneer in the world of vegan cuisine. She is the creator, founder, and operating owner of Real Food Daily, one of the premier organic vegan-food establishments in the Los Angeles area that serves a 100% vegan menu using zero animal by-products and foods grown exclusively with organic farming methods. She is the author of The Real Food Daily Cookbook and the executive chef to Vegetarian Times magazine, and has her own cooking show, Naturally Deliciious, on the Veria channel from the Dish Network. She lives in Los Angeles with her family.

For the more ambitious vegetarian

I quit eating meat five years ago over ethical concerns, but I haven't been the best at it. What I mean by that is that while I am good at not eating meat (no beef, poultry or pork), I do eat fish and seafood, but more importantly (and detrimentally), I do eat lots of junk and stuff that is just not so good for me.

This means I'm always eager for a cookbook that helps me focus on eating healthy vegetarian food that also tastes good, and is quick and easy to make. So when I saw this cookbook offered up vegan-friendly meals that even meat-lovers would love, I had to give it a gander.

The author offers an introduction that explains why you would want to eat vegan (e.g. the health benefits, the environmental benefits, the ethical benefits, etc.), and then starts right in with the recipes.

The book has some beautiful photography, but not nearly as many photographs as I would have preferred. The chapters are interspersed with brief articles introducing things like superfoods or kitchen tips and informative bits about cooking techniques or equipment.

The author also touches on more focused practices, such as macrobiotics, and offers up sources for obtaining more information.

My final word: This cookbook is beautiful, and it is a great concept. My biggest complaint would probably be that it doesn't have as many really simple weekday meals as I'd like, and sometimes calls for less common ingredients. But it is great for the vegetarian/vegan who is looking to get a little more ambitious with their food prep.

Beautiful cookbook, but too many personal photos and not enough finished recipe photos.

This is a lovely cookbook and the reviews have been great. There is one thing that irks me and it's not just this author who does this.
While I appreciate an intro to family members and such, I'd MUCH rather see photos of the recipes made up instead of raw vegetables, the family shopping (three photos in one place of that), glaze being poured on the cake, FOUR photos of kids eating the cupcakes, a batch of blueberries--not a photo of the blueberry crumble but of the actual blueberries--you get the idea. There is a recipe that interests me greatly, "Baked Penne and Cauliflower with Cheesy Sauce." While the repine sounds delicious and I will probably make it, there is no photo (that I've found yet,) but on the "Variations and Do-Ahead Tips" there is a photo with a girl (her daughter?) holding a dog, flowers and an organic shopping bag, which is the
introduction to "What is Seitan?" I don't want to knock the recipes...I truly don't, but I'd rather see a photo of "Ann's Favorite Salad with Crumbled Maple Tempeh Bacon and Balsamic Vinaigrette" instead of the about full-page photo of her at a street shop, with her children, holding hands, looking a greens or something. Grr.....I truly would rather see the food photos. There are some photos of the finished recipes....but way too many of the family. Sorry....I don't mean to sound grouchy...but this is a cookbook and I would've loved to have seen more photos of the completed recipes.

Ann Gentry has a refreshing and relaxed approach to great food. Warm and never preachy, she is a gentle guide through the delicious world of vegan cuisine. I'm skeptical of the concept of 'superfoods' particularly in the swath of food as medicine cookbooks (and the assertion that they will cure all your ailments, and bring world peace!), and I think she has a great approach: that, yes, they contain a greater amount of nutrients, so they are good for you; and it's fun to play with new foods, so why not include them in your diet?

A wonderful addition to your vegetarian/vegan shelf. I want to cook everything, right now, which is a sure sign of a great cookbook.
