About the Author
Julio Cortazar (1914-1984), Argentine novelist, poet, essayist, and short-story writer, was born in Brussels, and moved permanently to France in 1951. Cortazar is now recognized as one of the century's major experimental writers, reflecting the influence of French surrealism, psychoanalysis, and his love of both photography and jazz, along with his strong commitment to revolutionary Latin American politics.

Just terrific

This is simply one of the best books I've read in the past couple of years, in any genre. It's full of warmth, humour and insight. There's no comparison to some other writerly lectures on literature, such as Nabokov's volumes, which I tried to read many years back: this one is totally unpretentious, the text preserves the spontaneity of the lecture hall (including student questions in each of the eight talks), and Cortázar sounds like he was a real human being. In addition to saying many interesting things of a literary nature -- such as about the special qualities of short stories, and the distinctions among the comic, the humorous and the playful, among other topics -- Cortázar provides some great descriptions of the political engagement of both writers and readers. A pair of more formal texts in the appendices expand on this political theme.
Most chapters focus on short stories, often quoting them at length, but there are also discussions of the processes of writing "Rayuela [Hopscotch]" and "Libro de Manuel [A Manual for Manuel]." Since a number of the stories were unfamiliar to me, reading them along with this book was a very enjoyable immersive experience. If your Spanish is weak, don't worry. I'm very poorly self-taught in the language, but at least in the expository passages Cortázar's Spanish was clear enough for me to make it through with great pleasure and interest, including being able to laugh at (I think) the right places. The passages from his fiction were of course more difficult to read cold for someone as unlettered in Spanish as I am, but in most cases I'd read the stories beforehand in English or French translation before tackling the original versions here. Now that I've finished it, I really miss it, and I know it will take me several days before I can let go enough to get absorbed in some other book.

Leer este texto es como estar sentado en la clase que impartió

Cortazar nos revela los que y porqué de muchos de sus escritos, nos declara sus motivaciones y nos deleita con sus anecdotas. Sus referencias a otros autores no son, como comunmente, simples anotaciones academicas. En su caso se logra apreciar el sentimiento que le produce tal autor y nos platica, cuando lo ha conocido, pequeñas historias de los momentos en que compartieron la vida. De verdad, la lectura está llena de sensaciones, por momentos uno se traslada al salón de clases y quiere intervenir y pedirle que nos revele más detalles acerca de sus cuentos y novelas.
Es una lectura definitivamente recomendable. Especialmente para los que disfrutamos su obra pero incluso para aquellos que todavía no lo han leido.

Recomiendo la lectura de este libro que nos acerca más a Julio Cortazar, uno de los escritores más destacados en la narrativa hispana. Estas clases impartidas por él, en Estados Unidos, arrojan mucha luz sobre el oficio del escritor. Lo recomiendo.
