The Devil's Disciple, by George Bernard Shaw

Shaw believed that theatre audiences of the 1890s deserved more than the hollow spectacle and sham he saw displayed on the London stage. But he also recognized that people wanted to be entertained while educated, and to see purpose mixed with pleasure. Shaw employed traditional dramatic forms - Victorian melodrama, the history play and the adventure story - to turn received wisdom upside down. Set during the American War of Inde-pendence, 'The Devil's Disciple' exposes fake Puritanism and piety.

About the Author
BERNARD SHAW was born in Dublin in 1856. After his arrival in London in 1876 he became an active Socialist and a brilliant platform speaker. He wrote on many social aspects of the day: on Common Sense about the War (1914), How to Settle the Irish Question (1917) and The Intelligent Woman's Guide to Socialism and Capitalism (1928). He undertook his own education at the British Museum and consequently became keenly interested in cultural subjects. Thus his prolific output included music, art and theatre reviews, which were collected into several volumes such as Music in London 1890-1894 (3 vols, 1931); Pen Portraits and Reviews (1931); and Our Theatres in the Nineties (3 vols, 1931). He also wrote five novels and some shorter fiction, including The Black Girl in Search of God and Some Lesser Tales and Cashel Byron's Profession, both published in Penguin's Bernard Shaw Library. He conducted a strong attack on the London theatre and was closely associated with the intellectual revival of British theatre. His plays fall into several categories: 'Plays Pleasant'; 'Plays Unpleasant'; comedies; chronicle-plays; 'metabiological Pentateuch' (Back to Methuselah, a series of plays); and 'political extravaganzas'. Bernard Shaw died in 1950.

This is the book that turned me into a big Shaw fan
By Kylie Edwards
This is the book that turned me into a big Shaw fan. A friend who was still laughing about it strongly recommended it to me, so I read it and was absolutely delighted with it. It's such a crack up.

In this tale the Revolutionary War is lost by the British due to an oopsie on their part, and the story's serious tone with all the silliness going on only makes it that much funnier.

This story was smart and hilarious. I loved it and wanted more when it was over. I'll have to buy another one of his books. I just love his style.

I can't resist any chance I can get to peek into the mind of a genius, and Shaw was a true genius. This story was delightful and brilliant.

Brilliant, original, and side splitting funny
By Peter John Pols
I laughed myself silly reading this one. As a history buff, I found this hilariously imaginative tale of how the British lost the Revolutionary War to be incredibly witty. It's a truly outstanding work and such an original idea. I'm surprised the Monty Python crew never did anything with this.
I loved the premise, and the characters, and the light hearted mockery that Shaw made of the do or die genre. I especially loved the outrageous change of the reverend's ideals and his heroic actions to save Dudgeon's life. This is such an excellent story and shows that there is nothing that Shaw can't successfully poke fun at.
George Bernard Shaw created numerous masterpieces over the span of his writing career. He has the distinction of being the only person to ever be awarded both an Oscar and the Nobel Prize for Literature. He was a very humble and conscientious man, a political activist and a vegetarian. His conscientiousness shows in his work by his inability to write meaningless fluff at a time when fluff dominated the stage. His trademark is his classic use of ample humor in dramas with serious subject matter. It takes a special kind of genius to be able to pull that off as flawlessly as he did.
