The first paragraph warns you what you're getting into: the ancient and the modern, mercilessly fused. The first scene was shocking to me -- I expected lofty language from such august historical figures -- but as the story unfolds I came to realize that it's about a brutal war. We elevate the Iliad by shrouding it in mythology and legend, and now Armitage holds it in front of us in unambiguous language as a nasty, terrible war fought by nasty, terrible people, and Odysseus deserves what happens to him in the sequel.
It's a play, so try imagining how you would direct it. Is Odysseus clever? Obnoxious? Smarmy?
Is Agamemnon a dottering regal or a slick-haired godfather with shifty eyes?
What I like most about this is that, in omitting details, this rendition of the Iliad opens it up to infinite reinterpretation in one's imagination.

Armitage is the utility-infielder of writer-poets and his work in retelling classics is reason alone to genuflect before his talent. A great, entertaining and timeless translation.
