Funny read for science fiction fans

AbductiCon is a fun science fiction novel that takes place at a science fiction convention. On the opening night of the convention things are not going smoothly. There was a mix up with the posters, the Author Guest of Honor hasn’t turned up, and the con chair’s boyfriend has just smashed his car. When it looks like nothing worse could happen, the entire convention hotel is abducted by androids.
I must admit that in my misspent youth I attended quite a few science fiction conventions. I even worked on a few con coms (convention committees for the uninitiated). I seem to remember organizing the belly dancers as the opening act, so that little detail caused me to laugh. This novel is full of science fiction tropes and references to movies, novels and comics. It is populated by the characters that one would find at a science fiction convention. For a lifelong fan of science fiction, it is a fun and enjoyable read. It relies on the same idea that I have read in Spider Robinson novels or Andrea Host: that science fiction/fantasy fans and/or gamers would be able to handle the otherworldly or unusual better than “mundanes”. The only thing keeping me from completely enjoying this novel, is that the science fiction elements of the plot are so unbelievable that is was impossible for me to suspend my disbelief and really involve myself in the story. The characters, while familiar and funny, were largely stereotypical and two dimensional. As an exercise in spotting all the references and in-jokes this book was enjoyable. As a walk down memory lane, it was a hoot. But it was perhaps not the most successful science fiction novel.

ABDUCTICON was a fun romp sort of read

ABDUCTICON was a fun romp sort of read. It was beautiful in its simplicity and lack of complication. It set out to be a fun tribute to science fiction and the surrounding con culture and I think it did just that. Of course, the lack of complexity did make for some convenient moments and the simplicity sometimes meant that the novel didn't delve as deeply as I like in my science fiction and occasionally over-simplified, but these things didn't significantly take away from my enjoyment of the book. I accepted it for what it was, and it was good fun.
I like to think the author kept a spreadsheet of every reference she made in the novel (how else would one keep track of which ones had already been made?) and I would LOVE to see that spread sheet. I KNOW I missed quite a few of these Easter eggs, but the ones I did find filled me with no small amount of delight. Sometimes those inside jokes and references feel like they're slyly sneaked in by the author with undertones of smug self-satisfaction, but I felt none of that here. They were there for the pure enjoyment of the reader AND author. This was much of the charm of the novel. We were all here together to have a BLAST.
While much of the fan culture felt very familiar, this was the place the book suffered the grossest of over-simplifications and I think it would have benefited from just a touch more complexity in describing the types of people who staffed and went to conventions. I think the author did the book a disservice by painted too-broad strokes in that area and spending more time than necessary detailing things like some of the meetings behind the scenes of the con.
This problem lead to some unfortunately poor characterization and a confusion of who the main characters were. I would have told you the main characters were two ENTIRELY different people after the first few chapters than I would now. I was especially disappointed in Andie Mae's end point and Angel Silverman as a whole (and her husband's treatment of her). I feel like both those women could have used a little more attention in the novel. Also, some relationships weren't particularly clear because of this broad-strokes characterization.

Fun Homage to Scifi Conventions

Andie Mae is running the ConCom for the first time having staged a coup and things just aren't going as planned. The posters need to be sent back for the third time, the program booklets have the wrong times for the Guest of Honour interview although this may not be an issue because he is late and no one knows where he might be. And, if all of this isn't annoying enough, four androids have abducted the entire hotel and have flown it to the moon causing participants to dub this Abducticon so - Best. Con. Ever.
Reviewing Abducticon by author Alma Alexander is a bit difficult since, although I enjoy speculative fiction, I have never attended a Con. The characters and the plot here both lack depth and the story itself contains some rather large holes and loose ends - but I'm guessing that that is the point. This is an homage to Scifi Conventions and the movies, TV shows, books, and fans that spawn them while poking gentle fun at them. Let's face it, many of the shows like Star Trek had huge plot problems if anyone cared to analyse them too closely - the Prime Directive, anyone - but it would have made for some very dull TV if the Star Trek crew actually followed it. And Abducticon makes sly references to many popular science fiction shows like Dr Who and Star Trek as well as Asimov's Three Laws of Robotics. Recognizing these references was half the fun of the novella which, overall, was an enjoyable romp.
