Doesn't dissappoint

Fans of Roger the Chapman will really like this book. It has all the things you like about the series, but with a few twists and a great story. Attention to historical details are very good. Reccomend it highly.

Love Roger the Chapman

I love all the Roger the Chapman books. I can not put them down once I start reading them. I would have given it all the stars I could except I hated the ending of this one. I hope that Ms. Sedley picks up this story where she ended it for the next Roger book and somehow resolves the emotions brought up at the end of this book. Looking forward to the next book.

Good, until the end

While Kate Sedley does her usual, excellent job of bringing to life fifteenth century England, there were some serious problems with the ending, which made me want to give the book three and a half stars.
I almost rounded down, just because she brought up Talbot of Shrewsbury several times, with no mention of his daughter, Eleanor, whose purported marriage to Edward IV brought Richard to the throne, and therefore should have been mentioned by at least one of the characters. But I decided to round up because of the wonderful depiction of Roger with his family and friends in Bristol during the holiday season.
Unfortunately, the ending was too frustrating to overlook. SPOILERS: Why would the mummers have escaped to France of all places, especially with Ned now marked as a hated English archer? If the mummers were planning to flee early the next morning, why the need to kill Roger and certainly why the need to kill Dick in his place? Finally, knowing that they were ruthless and suspecting they had killed Dick, why would Roger have gone after them alone - even if he has foolishly seemed to consider himself invincible in the past too.
