Age Old, Yet Brand New

The love story alone in this book keeps bringing you back to read more. But Armbrister doesn't stop there, she ties it in with the history of the Hebrews' move to Canaan, after 40 years of wandering in the desert since escaping from the Pharoah of Egypt. The hardships the multitude encounter on the way such as starvation, thirst, and serpents are nothing to compare with the loss of their leader, Moses who is forbidden by Yahweh to cross the river. Because the two lovers, Ana'el and Ithacar yearn for each other, they manage to find stolen moments together. From a secret meeting, Ana'el finds she is with child. Ana'el and Ithacar cannot marry because the law forbids marriage between the Egyptian race (Ana'el, whose mother was Egyptian) and a Priest (Ithacar, whose father is a Cohen.) Yet they can't stay away from each other. The complications that arise from this passion and the laws that forbid it, turn each of the participants and those around them into lives they would not have chosen. But the Lord speaks and Ana'el must listen. I didn't want to put this book down...I was in the middle of another review and kept coming back to this. The story is age old, yet brand new. This story lives on in all of us who have read it. Highly Recommended.

Wonderfully Beautiful and Haunting Story

Wonderful, wonderful story. Between Egypt and Canaan is a Biblical historical fiction that is set during the 40 years in the desert. Ana'el is the daughter of a former Egyptian slave and a man from the House of Judah. She is not considered equal among the tribe. Her's is a story of forbidden love..... the love of a Levite, a Coehn or a priest. Though she is carrying his child they can never marry due to the law.
Ana'el life is not of her choosing as she is a woman and subject to the dictates of men. She is brave, as only a woman can be, when facing the loss of her true love, loss of her parents, marriage to those she does not love. Above it all, she keeps a faith in the Lord God and remains true to herself and to her children. She chooses to survive.
Yamit Armbrister does an excellent job of interlacing the Hebrew Scripture throughout the story. She present a credible story of the events that realistically could have transpired during the 40 years in the desert. She remains true to the Hebrew Scripture and to the time period. As a former Catholic religion teacher, I so appreciate this attention to the Scriptures.
I read Between Egypt and Canaan in one setting. I couldn't put down this book. It is haunting, beautiful and all consuming. I am sorry that it I have finished it. Another one of Yamit's characters that I want to know more about as she enters into a new life in the Promised Land.
This review in no way does this book justice. There just are not words to adequately express my emotional reaction to Between Egypt and Canaan.

A must read!

I have read it in one breath! Loved the setting of the story, Ana'el and Ithamar, their impossible love while crossing the desert. I thought I knew the story of the Hebrews but the side stories were wonderful and very informative. Armbrister did a great job describing the era, Moses, the hunger and the aimless wandering in the desert. The story of the Cohens is intriguing and if I'm not wrongly is a problem for a conen to mary even today a divorcee, widower or a converter.
One of the best books I read lately. Highly recommended!
