Midwest Maize: How Corn Shaped the U.S. Heartland (Heartland Foodways), by Cynthia Clampitt

Food historian Cynthia Clampitt pens the epic story of what happened when Mesoamerican farmers bred a nondescript grass into a staff of life so prolific, so protean, that it represents nothing less than one of humankind's greatest achievements. Blending history with expert reportage, she traces the disparate threads that have woven corn into the fabric of our diet, politics, economy, science, and cuisine. At the same time she explores its future as a source of energy and the foundation of seemingly limitless green technologies. The result is a bourbon-to-biofuels portrait of the astonishing plant that sustains the world.

"Food historian Cynthia Clampitt explores the astounding story of how corn developed from a humble grain into one of the greatest achievements in history. You will like this book especially if
By Anne Hugo
Cynthia's book, Midwest Maize, is simply a masterpiece of descriptive writing. On every page, in fact, every paragraph, I was saying "I didn't know THAT!" And I grew up in the heart of the Minnesota Corn Belt -- but there was so much more to know, and it's in this book. You will like this book especially if: 1) you are a foodie, 2) you like history, 3) you are a chemist (like me) and like to see good science mixed with good writing, 4) if you appreciate good research, 5) you like a food made from corn (pop corn is well treated here!), 6) you think you know all there is to know about: the Mid West, Chicago, the railroads, Abraham Lincoln, hybrid corn, GMO, planting, farming, --- you get the idea.
Well researched and heavily documented, you'll put this book on your shelf for re-reading. And you will have found the perfect gift for just about any occasion you can imagine!

Corn and Culture: Our American Story
By bookLover
So commonplace is corn, especially to Americans, that the importance of corn to our shared history, is easily overlooked. In large measure, corn is woven into the very fabric of Americans as a people. It has connected us, advanced us, changed us. Decisions about corn...what we cooked, what we planted, how we harvested, how produce was sent to market, and the markets and uses of the crop, are just a few ways that ubiquitous corn is the story of Americans. Well-researched and organized for effortless and enjoyable nonfiction reading, this in-depth look at corn through a humanities lens, is witty and engaging. I'll wager that readers will have more than one "Ah ha!" moment before finishing the first chapter. A certainty for gift-giving success, give this unique book to folks who enjoy the "big picture" by understanding the significance of detail. And don't forget a copy for yourself!

From Humble Grass to American DNA
By Ralph L Haynes
History buff or foodie, Midwest Maize is an engaging read that will change the way you think about corn. Cynthia Clampitt's book tells the amazing story of how this humble grass has become part of the American DNA. When you understand the scope of corn's influence on our lives, flying over the Heartland, enjoying a soft drink, sipping a cocktail, munching on tortilla chips or eating meat will never be quite the same.
