About the Author
Jean-Pierre Alaux is a magazine, radio and tele- vision journalist when he is not writing novels in southwestern France. He is a genuine wine and food lover, and won the Antonin Carême prize for his cookbook La Truffe sur le Soufflé, which he wrote with the chef Alexis Pélissou.
Noël Balen lives in Paris, where he shares his time between writing, making re- cords, and lecturing on music. He plays bass, is a music critic and has authored a number of books about musicians in addition to his novel and short-story writing.
Sally Pane studied French at State University of New York Oswego and the Sorbonne before receiving her Masters Degree in French Literature from the University of Colorado where she wrote Camus and the Americas: A Thematic Analysis of Three Works Based on His Journaux de Voyage. Her career includes more than twenty years of translating and teach- ing French and Italian at Berlitz and at Colorado University Boulder. She lives in Boulder, Colorado with her husband.

Cooker in a different light

The descriptions of Cognac, the making of this fine liquor piqued my interest. The lush environs of Samson’s Mill even the details of the Lavoisier property captured my attention.
I found the ending well done, wasn’t sure of the culprit given the scandalous references and harbored secrets of the various characters.
I am a fan of this series, although I did find this particular installment veering off the road. I understand the authors need to not adhere to a formulaic style, however this narrative might have taken edgy too far.
I wasn’t a fan of the implied incestuous relationship between brothers and sister. The sexuality throughout the narrative dominated the mystery aspect serving as a distraction becoming tiresome.
Cooker’s behavior was shocking. His conduct when reunited with his former love seemed so unlike his usual refined persona. He becomes hyper focused on sex and bawdy thoughts commandeer his mind. His mercurial and impatient behavior is brazen sans a diet as the excuse. Cooker just isn’t his usual gentlemanly, well mannered behaved self.
Looking forward to the next in this series with more mystery and less or no sexuality in the narrative with the charming Cooker acting more like the beloved Cooker I adore.

Winemaker Detective #5!
When you find a great series, you can't help but just go hungrily from one title to the next. The only downside is when you begin to near the end of the currently published or translated works, and have to begin the eager wait for the next!
I've said it before in my reviews, and I'll say it over again - the mark of a stellar author is one that remains true to their style, but also innovates with each new work. And the authors of the Winemaker Detective series have hit that mark each and every time. The new facet they bring out in Cognac Conspiracies is that of extended passages from other viewpoints than that of Cooker. I even noticed the word usage changed depending on the character, as certain words and descriptive styles would show up more often respectively, and it really helped to shift the perspective. I really liked that about this work, it added a layer of interest.
This book also stretched me as a linguist, as I had to stop and look up no less than 3 words throughout my reading. I greatly enjoyed getting to expand my vocabulary and understanding of the world of the book, but I must recommend that readers keep a dictionary close at hand when they pick up Cognac Conspiracies!
I've shared before how these books are written from a world-view and style very different from my previous experience, and I've enjoyed getting to experience that. However, this particular title seemed a little out of the normal cadence for the authors. My reading felt like the sensation of going down a bumpy road while having a conversation. There was bumpy, wobbling aspect to the voice in this work, but as always, the mystery wrapped with a straight forward, clean ending. I didn't feel the quality of the tale suffered any, it was just something that gave me pause in my reading.
Cognac Conspiracies went back to more of your classic mystery feel, but this was enriched by the multiple viewpoint format. The tale brings to life the business perils that are a reality in the world of spirits, or really any enterprise - but gave the reader something more to ponder by focusing on how different parties react when it comes to dealing with a family business; how to balance generational legacy with profits and market relevancy.
Highly recommended!

I've enjoyed other entries in this series more than this one

'Cognac Conspiracies' is the fifth book in the Winemaker Detective Mysteries, and probably the first one I didn't thoroughly enjoy. I felt like characters I'd come to know were not acting like they had in previous books.
This time around Benjamin Cooker is sent to audit the books of a famous distiller of cognac for sale to a foreign investor. Near the estate Benjamin runs into an old flame who is widowed with a son. Virgile is especially flirtatious and irresistible to the local population. A drowning changes things and Virgile and Benjamin find themselves in the midst of trying to find out if it was a murder, a suicide, or an accident. Of course, this is a mystery series, so it's the former, but who could it be?
This one was just strange to me. The mystery gets resolved seemingly by accident. Benjamin and Virgile seem less interested in those events that personal life things. Some of those storylines felt long. Let's not get me started on the weird family that owns the Cognac estate. Perhaps these events are based on fact, or this is just one that didn't translate as well culturally, but it just all felt a bit off to me. I'm certainly looking forward to the next one in the series, and I hope this one was just an oddity in an otherwise decent mystery series.
