Captivating Family Memoire

Through her superb writing, the author (daughter of Dorothy) and (granddaughter of Blanche) draws you into the unique story of the relationship between her mother and grandmother as told through their letters. Using their correspondence, she tells a story that is personal and at the same time relevant to everyones' stories. It will reinforce your appreciation of the power of family past, present and future and the way the central characters of our lives continue to impact and influence us even after they are no longer with us. Dorothy (daughter) and Blanche (mother) dealt with financial hardship in creative ways. Their devotion and love for each other shines through in their letters. The Author does a masterful job of setting the stage and weaving the stories, pointing out what we are loosing by replacing letters with instant communication through email and text. This book is a labor of love and through reading it, I found myself growing to embrace this family, and in the process, finding a new appreciation of my own.

Loved this book from cover to cover!

Having grown up in the same neighborhood as the author, I was easily able to visualize the towns and business establishments that were part of the everyday life of Blanche and Dorothy. But what amazed me most was the devotion to writing all of the mundane facts of each day, sprinkled with tidbits of huge accomplishments (by women!) and once in awhile a little judgement of each other's behavior. Huge respect and love in this family during the toughest of times come shining through. I kept thinking I was reading someone's private email messages, since these two exchanged letters almost daily throughout Dorothy's college days. The book taught me a lot about what my own parents and grandparents were doing during the same period, but no one wrote about it (that I know of!). Thank you, Mary Ann, for your labor of love and for being such a wonderful writer. I loved this from cover to cover. Congratulations!

A poignant journey

Shaky Apron Strings is a memoir of two strong women told by Mary Ann Althaver. Althaver seamlessly weaves the letters from her mother, Dorothy Hill Barningham, and her grandmother, Blanche Hansler Hill, into a glimpse of the period from 1928-32 when Dorothy was away at college. I enjoyed experiencing the joys of a newly redesigned dress, an invitation to a sorority rush or a special date. The book left me with an appreciation of a time that was simpler in some ways and much more complicated in others.
Althaver's writing is a joy.
