J.B. Walker's Space Trash is set in a near-future world of space missions and covert governmental space programmes. Chas Thomas has wrongly been convicted of embezzlement and rather than seeing his sentence out in jail, he opts for enrolment on the 'Space Debris' programme. But the mission is shrouded in secrecy and Chas's search for details is met by silence at every turn. When his astronaut contact, Greta Laars uncovers the conspiracy surrounding Chas's conviction and they both learn of the secrets behind the space mission, they are thrust into a deadly game of cat and mouse. As Chas plans to make his way back to Earth, it seems that Earth holds as much uncertainty and danger for the pair as space.

White knuckle thriller with a twist
By NewYorker
"Space Trash" is a page turner that combines the white-collar intrigue of a John Grisham story with the white-knuckle tension of a "Mission Impossible." John Walker's intelligent presentation of an all-too-likely future scenario of harvesting satellite debris is a timely echo of the plot of "Gravity" but goes beyond that with its suggestion that world powers might use outer space as the easy depository for nuclear waste from earth.
What carries the story beyond merely the mechanics and politics of such a policy is the brilliant touch of having this atrocious and dangerous procedure carried out by a well-trained felon as an "option" for serving his sentence. And what brings the story up to the level of satisfying the reader's sense of justice is the role the felon plays in working out his own vindication of innocence and his exposure of the hypocrisy of the nameless international bureaucrats who mastermind the pollution of the universe.
Chas Thomas is a hardworking financial analyst who is betrayed by colleagues and convicted by their false testimony of stealing from his clients. Chas earns the trust and affection of his astronaut minder, Greta, and with her help he turns the tables on his accusers.
Walker's knowledge of the details of space technology makes the story very plausible. His familiarity with Caribbean cruise ship security makes the ending both credible and scary. If Chas and Greta can get on and off a cruise ship using someone else's credentials, what's to stop a terrorist from doing the same? Walker twists the knife deliciously into the gut of international bullies who use secrecy and national security as their cover to serve their own selfish purposes.
Bravo, John; keep writing.

Definitely not 'trashy'!
By Bubbles
I wasn't sure what to expect from the book but I liked it. Right from the start, you are intrigued by the options given to Chas when he is framed and convicted of embezzlement. As a form of community service, he chooses to act as a space garbage collector. The author clearly knows his stuff about space (first hand experience or good research??). Set in the near future, the action moves to outer space and, once back to earth, to different locations. The novel maintains a good pace as Chas sets out to clear his name, with the help of Greta - a female astronaut/love interest. I've not read anything by his author before, but I'll be looking out for more of his works.

Cracking good read
By Lynds R
At heart this is a fast pacey thriller. Having recently read about the issue of manmade "stuff" in orbit I was intrigued when I stumbled on this book. Interesting approach to a very real dilemma and a great story to boot
