My Love for it Faded

When I first read The Common Pursuit, I fell in love. I was dangerously close to submitting it for me to direct it. Luckily, I "slept on it" and found that The Common Pursuit is a damn good read at first, but the more you think about it, the less enjoyable the play is. It's loaded with twists, but they're not good or particularly original. It seems like every bad thing Gray could think up happens in this play: abortion, murder, infidelity, sterility, etc. It'd be excusable if his characters were unique, but they seem to represent common stereotypes rather than actual characters: the elitist, the dweeb, the womanizer, the snob, etc. The reason this play gets three stars and not two or one is because it's held together by a remarkably poignant set of discoveries by the characters that their idealist fairy tale of what the real world would be like is completely wrong. It's a powerful theme for a twenty year old to grapple with and that's what grabbed me about the show. But I soon realized that I didn't need to sacrifice characters for a good theme. Good themes are everywhere and sometimes they're coupled with good characters. So while it amused me at first, I'll have to pass on The Common Pursuit from now on.

The Common Pursuit "scenes from the literary life"

The Common Pursuit is a play that will take you back in time. Whether you lived during the 70's or not, this play makes you relate. Any one who is struggling to survive in the world of the arts will identify with these characters. Although I am a woman, and the story revolves around men, I found myself falling in love with the script. Women will learn about the way a man's mind might work, and the men will learn about women. Try reading it just once, and you may just find yourself picking it up to read again

Struggles of the oxbridge literary crowd from college to middle age

This play opens with two college students making out. It also opens with the the first editors meeting of a new college literary magazine. The title applies to both events. Thoughout the play everyone is trying to get laid (whether hetro or homo sexually) and throughout the play a common group of peole try to keep the magazine alive. BOth pursuits run into plenty of pitfalls.

I am partial to the author and think this is one of his best plays. I saw it live in New york but it also works on the page as well. Gray is funny and is excellent at crafting humanistic works with mathematical precision. I think he is at least the qual of Stoppard and Pinter (who was his friend and produced many of Gray's plays).

Please avoid the terrably lame filmed version by the BBC. That version is strangely misses the humour, energy, and humanity of the play.

Incisive, confessional, hilarious, rueful commentary by a master essayist

I bought this book after reading an essay("The Busy Trap")by this author in the New York Times online. I had never heard of Tim Kreider before, but this essay was so topical, so insightful, so on-target that I simply had to see what else he had to say.

I was a little hesitant because it became clear after a bit of research that Kreider's politics and mine were pretty far out of sync. (Not that I mind competing viewpoints, I just don't like the whole bashing thing.) I need not have worried. Unlike much of Kreider's work of the George W. Bush era, which consistently savaged all things Republican, We Learn Nothing is not overtly political. Each essay is unique, highly original, wistful, soul-baring, poignant, and achingly human. Although a naturally passionate lefty partisan, Kreider is, to his immense credit, rigorously intellectually honest and reflexively fair throughout this latest collection. He is unsparingly critical of himself and those with whom he aligns, and gracious and empathetic to his philosophical opposites. It feels a little like an act of atonement, as though Kreider is saying: Sorry I got a little carried away there. See, I'm much better now.

I cannot recall ever having read an author so preternaturally incisive, so aware, so adept at performing what amounts to a full monty of the soul without seeming self-indulgent. Kreider is relentlessly introspective and profoundly self-aware. Yet this is no act of mere navel-gazing. Above all, We Learn Nothing is the work of a sensitive, piercing intelligence trying to make sense of the world by first making sense of itself. This book should be required reading for anyone trying to come to terms with this messy, confusing, brutal, beautiful, tragic, hilarious, stupid, fragile thing we call life. Scratch that: This book should be required reading, period.

After reading this book I thought, I would love to spend an afternoon with this guy over beers, discussing anything and everything.

Masterful storytelling

It's easy to compare a book like this to the works of a host of other contemporary essayists (Sedaris, et al), but after the second or third essay I realized Kreider's voice is unique: he tells stories, often with the barest of details, in a way that doesn't expose himself too much and/or doesn't exploit someone else in the process. Which is to say, he has written a book that is heart-breaking, charming, edge-of-your-seat suspenseful (hoping that he will offer up all the gory details) and -- even though I hate this word when used to describe writing -- generous. Kreider is a masterful storyteller, and I can't recall the last time I enjoyed a book of essays this much.

The stories themselves cover a lot of terrain: dysfunctional family members, transgendered friends, near death experiences, relationships; but always from the perspective of someone who's madly in love with his friends and family, warts and all. Kreider exposes the ugly/beautiful truth of what it means to be human in the most honest, thoughtful, endearing and entertaining way.

Highly, highly recommended.

This is a yummy book. I have a sweet tooth and love trying out new desserts. Cheesecake is like my ultimate dessert. With a 101 recipes its a dream come true for my appetite.
The recipes are fairly simple and even beginners can try them out. I never imagined there are so many ways to prepare cheesecake and this has opened a new arena for me. I am trying out a new recipe every alternate day. I do have to check my weight but right now i am enjoying having yummy cheesecakes.

I had always wanted to make cheesecakes at home but was to worried that I would screw it up, but since I bought this book I see how easy and unintimidating it really is! I love how the first few pages cover the basics and gives you tips, I wouldn't have ever thought to use a water bath, I'd be too nervous about screwing the cheesecake up, but if you follow the directions, it really works! My family loves so many of these that it looks like I'll be making at least one cheesecake a week till we've tried them all, My kids really like the tangy cherry cheesecake.

great book lot and a lots of recipe that will help me to a good yummy desserts many choices at all. very easy to understand the procedure.
a lots more easy to follow the direction by step by step. all the dessert is so yummy.

An Interesting Stepping Stone

Many people would like to say that Shakespeare did not write this play. But this is hardly fair. Even with the world's finest writers such as Marlowe and Dickens, not every single thing they write can be a masterpiece. But what makes "The Two Gentleman of Verona" worth reading? Well, Shakespeare presents us with a valid theme. (Conflicts often exist between romance and friendship.) There is also beautiful language. Launce and his dog offer some interesting comedy as well as a beautiful and memorable passage in 2.3. The scene where Valentine is accepted amonst the outlaws is memorable. This is Shakespeare's first play where a woman (Julia) disuises herself as man to do some investigating. It is also easy to see that several elements of this play were used in "Romeo and Juliet." To be sure, this is not a masterpiece like "The Comedy of Errors," "Richard III," or "King Lear." But it is still an good study that is worth some interest.

The Archetype of Later Romantic Comedies

Although few would claim that Two Gentlemen of Verona is one of Shakespeare's greatest plays, it is well worth reading in order to serve as a reference for the best of his romantic comedies. In essence, Two Gentlemen of Verona gives you a measuring stick to see the brilliance in the best works.
The play has the first of Shakespeare's many brave, resourceful and cross-dressing heroines, Julia.
Shakespeare always used his fools and clowns well to make serious statements about life and love, and to expose the folly of the nobles. Two Gentlemen of Verona has two very fine comic scenes featuring Launce. In one, he lists the qualities of a milk maid he has fallen in love with and helps us to see that love is blind and relative. In another, he describes the difficulties he has delivering a pet dog to Silvia on his master, Proteus', behalf in a way that will keep you merry on many a cold winter's evening.
The story also has one of the fastest plot resolutions you will ever find in a play. Blink, and the play is over. This nifty sleight of hand is Shakespeare's way of showing that when you get noble emotions and character flowing together, things go smoothly and naturally.
The overall theme of the play develops around the relative conflicts that lust, love, friendship, and forgiveness can create and overcome. Proteus is a man who seems literally crazed by his attraction to Silvia so that he loses all of his finer qualities. Yet even he can be redeemed, after almost doing a most foul act. The play is very optimistic in that way.
I particularly enjoy the plot device of having Proteus and Julia (pretending to be a page) playing in the roles of false suitors for others to serve their own interests. Fans of Othello will enjoy these foreshadowings of Iago.
The words themselves can be a bit bare at times, requiring good direction and acting to bring out the full conflict and story. For that reason, I strongly urge you to see the play performed first. If that is not possible, do listen to an audio recording as you read along. That will help round out the full atmosphere that Shakespeare was developing here.
After you finish Two Gentlemen of Verona, think about where you would honor friendship above love, where equal to love, and where below love. Is friendship less important than love? Or is friendship merely less intense? Can you experience both with the same person?
Enjoy close ties of mutual commitment . . . with all those you feel close to!

One of my favorite plays.

"The Two Gentlemen of Verona" is one of my favorite Shakespeare plays. Maybe that's because it's one of the only one's I understand. My youth Theatre did a wonderful production of this play. I was not in it, but I saw it twice. It was set in the 60's, peasant-shirted and bell-bottomed. I think it's a wonderful story, although a bit unrealistic because of all the forgiveness that happens at the end of the play. But I think that it's a play everyone should read. This edition of the play is, I think, a very good one. If you are planning to buy a copy of "The Two Gentlemen of Verona," I would advise you to buy the most current edidtion printed by the Folger Shakespeare Library. They have lots of information in the book, and many definitions of the more difficult Elizabethian words.

L'Ant?christ date de 1888, ann?e ? la fin de laquelle l'auteur est tomb? dans une maladie mentale tr?s s?v?re lui fouettant d'une fa?on inhumaine (et NON PAS le syphillis comme dit "dans les rues"), qui durerait 12 ans jusqu'? son d?c?s en 1900. Cet oeuvre-ci contient les attaques les plus furieuses et profondes de la part de Nietzsche contre la christianit?. C'est comme si la critique sur la religion que l'on rencontre partout dans ses livres, a prolif?r? dans son esprit d?s le (= son) d?but et se manifeste ici comme une explosion ?norm?ment forte.

A practical book that helps to deal with our hectic everyday life

Yep, this book is definitely for me. With three small children, long hours working husband, my own career and a dog! I'm always looking for ways to improve our nutrition despite the crazy, busy schedule. The book provides you with carefully assembled lists of items needed, food ingredients, shopping tips and the delicious recipes. It saves me time on thinking, planing, shopping and cooking, which gives me a little bit more time for family quality time or just for myself. Author Jenny Jameson has written a cookbook filled with plenty of practical information and recipes. You will also find an interactive table of contents making navigation easy. Loads of information and a lot of great tips! With a bit of planning you can really save time and make life a little easier :) The recipes sound great and there are pictures of most of the meals which is a nice touch. The idea of having a delicious home cooked meal ready after work sounds good to me :) Check this one out!
