Fascinating! We are just beginning to learn about the correlation between the changes in seasons and the changes in our bodies, both externally and internally, but do we pay attention, or even know what kind of foods during which season are optimal for our health?

In this book on Healthy Eating, Tracy Huang goes into detail about how seasonal eating helps restore health, beauty and mind. When it is best to avoid raw foods because they are hard on the digestive system, when to turn to pungent foods, how the colors of food nurture your organs so that they stay in balance, which foods help to prevent skin and internal diseases and so much more. The author has provided in this book, how to eat during all four seasons according to traditional Chinese medicine. By eating healthy during each season of the year, you are ensuring your body stays healthy as it changes while the season changes. Seasonal eating is all about finding the right time to consume the right food. In this book the author teaches you all the basics of seasonal eating while also getting in deep detail of what foods to eat when and how it can benefit you. By consuming whole foods it can be seen as a process which heals the body, prevent diseases, restores natural glow, and strengthens health. The author explains the relationships between the Chinese five elements, the different seasons, your internal organs, and what to eat. This is a great book for anyone wanting to learn all about seasonal eating. The author does a wonderful job at explaining seasonal eating and provides you with so many healthy and beneficial recipes. This is an informative and interesting book. I now have a perfectly clear understanding of what seasonal eating is and how it can benefit me. I can’t wait to take what I have learned in this book and get started on a healthier, therapeutic lifestyle!

Excellent book

Tracy Huang learned me one very important thing - how to eat during different parts of year. This book is exactly about that. It has so many interesting and unique information regarding food combinations suitable for certain parts of the year. I applied those principles in my life and I already fell much better. Above all, this book has over 500 pages and it costs the same as many much shorter book, so I am sure that you will not regret if you download it.

This book, and all others by the same author, is a must for little girls between the ages of 6 and 11. I enjoyed them when I was a youngster , as did my own mother ! I have three little nieces who are being taught French and we introduced them to this book and others by La Comtesse de Segur..they fell in love too! Written hundreds of years ago, they have lost none of their charm or appeal. Simple stories where good deeds are always rewarded, where children across the ages still acted the same as our children do nowadays (less so though!).
A must, a classic of children litterature with none of the stuffiness that might entail!

About the Author
Noel Coward was born in 1899 in Teddington, Middlesex. He made his name as a playwright with "The Vortex" (1924), in which he also appeared. His numerous other successful plays included "Fallen Angels" (1925), "Hay Fever" (1925), "Private Lives" (1933), "Design for Living" (1933) and "Blithe Spirit" (1941). During the war he wrote screenplays such as "Brief Encounter" (1944) and "In Which We Serve" (1942). In the fifties he began a new career as a cabaret entertainer. He published volumes of verse and a novel ("Pomp and Circumstance", 1960), two volumes of autobiography and four volumes of short stories: "To Step Aside" (1939), "Star Quality" (1951), "Pretty Polly Barlow" (1964) and "Bon Voyage" (1967). He was knighted in 1970 and died three years later in Jamaica.

Written when Coward was only twenty-four, and produced shortly after, in 1925, Hay Fever is a broad, manic farce which takes place in the country house of a self-absorbed, artistic family. The Blisses, each of whom is creative and spontaneous, ignore the stultifying conventions of society--Judith, an extravagant stage actress, who pursues her own whims whenever it pleases her; her husband David, an author, who enjoys his own spotlight and camp-followers; and their adult children, Simon and Sorel. When Sorel announces that she has invited a weekend guest and would like to be able to use "the Japanese room," she quickly discovers that each of the other family members has also invited a guest for "the Japanese room."

In the course of the weekend, all the guests--conventional people attracted by the exciting lives these non-conformists have created for themselves--find themselves at the mercy of their more confident and assertive hosts. Guests who arrive thinking themselves in love with one person find themselves unexpectedly engaged to marry someone else. No one listens to them, no one recognizes them as individuals, and no one cares about their dashed expectations. As the Bliss family controls the activity during the weekend, the farce borders on absurdity. Outrageous scenes and emotional confrontations, part of their "normal" lives, prove too much for their guests.

The fast-paced interaction one sees on stage constitutes the only "plot," and there are no background stories to add complexity. What you see is obvious--what Coward has intended you to see. Far less subtle than some of his later work and lacking the cynicism and clever repartee for which Coward later became known, the play nevertheless incorporates many of Coward's trademark themes--the sense of entitlement by artists (some of which, he hints, is because they really are superior), their flamboyant behavior, the casual attitudes toward marriage and sex, their egotism and insensitivity to "ordinary" people, along with their sense of fun as they pursue their own pleasure.

These themes are all set into sharp relief by the behavior and attitudes of the guests, who gain no audience sympathy for their predicaments because they are decidedly dull. Though some believe that this is one of Coward's best plays, others will prefer the clever repartee, wit, and irony of the later plays, which tend to have a more intimate focus and smaller cast of characters. Noel Coward (1899-1973) is best recalled for his sparkling yet acid-etched comedies, and the 1925 HAY FEVER is among the best, easily ranking alongside such titles as BLITHE SPIRIT, DESIGN FOR LIVING, and PRIVATE LIVES. Among his earlier successes, Coward received inspiration for the play when he visited the home of the great American actress Laurelette Taylor--and found both her and her family shockingly eccentric in an unexpectedly theatrical way.

Unlike most other Coward scripts, HAY FEVER relies less on plot and Coward's talent for sharp wit than it does upon character. Judith, directly based on Laurelette Taylor, is the lynchpin of the piece: recently retired from the stage, she is an intensely theatrical woman who enjoys dramatizing her life. She has invited a much younger man to be a weekend guest, never dreaming that her husband David, son Simon, and daughter Sorrel have each invited a guest as well.

The four guests soon discover that the maid is down with a toothache, there aren't enough rooms, and there is scarcely enough food to go around. To make matters worse, Judith plays every scene that presents itself. It is a habit in which she is not alone; her novelist husband and their two children are every bit as adept at theatrical hysteria as she, and before the weekend concludes the guests are treated to astonshing exhibitions that alternately annoy, confuse, and frighten them out of their wits.

Plays are written to be performed, not read, and HAY FEVER is a good example of the difficulties that can arise when a non-theatre person tries to visualize how it would be on the stage. On the page, it reads as clever and amusing, but only mildly so; on the stage, however, it is easily one of the most hilarious comedies of the 20th Century. Recommended for those who have the imagination required!

Hilarious

I think the English accents on this (and another) LA Theater Works show are fake, they especially sound it in this. But the acting itself was so good, I got used to it. I almost didn't buy this, new to me and a reviewer said there were no witty lines in it, just a farcical situation. I don't like that kind of comedy. However, he must have meant Noel Coward's other "Hay Fever" because this one was alive with funny lines, very funny lines. I loved it. And I thought the acting was exceptionally good. Without looking it up, I think Eric Stoltz played Paul in LATW's production of Simon's "Barefoot in the Park". If that is so, somebody's accent was fake! Frankly, am glad I have "Blithe Spirit" with an English cast (not LATW). I recommend this if you like Coward. Of course, this is the only version of "Hay Fever" (except a local little theater production which was lousy) I've ever heard. So I'm like Frederick in "Pirates of Penzance" choosing a wife.

There are ten recipes in this book and yesterday I tried the 'Breakfast Sausage Burger Patties'. I will also say that I am fortunate to be able to go to a slaughter house for my meat products.

This recipe has cloves, pepper, brown sugar, marjoram, ground pork and red pepper. I did not use the red pepper - just my personal preference not to!. I also cut the recipe in half and it came out well. In addition, I cooked the pork for about 7 minutes instead of the recommended 5.

Thought it was excellent and I have the 'Italian Sausage soup' on the stove now. Smells good and I will be back to update this review after the tast test is done.. It is snowing outside and will for the next 3 days so this will be my comfort food for lunches!.

Great read and I don't really read much. With that being said the plot, character involvement, the pace all kept me intrigued. The mystery and twists, the change up, the unraveling of the complete story leave you wanting more.

An Extraordinary Essay on Women and Fiction

In 1928, Virginia Woolf was asked to speak on the topic of "women and fiction". The result, based upon two papers she delivered to literary societies at Newnham and Girton in October of that year, was "A Room of One's Own", an extended essay on women as both writers of fiction and as characters in fiction. And, while Woolf suggests that, "when a subject is highly controversial-and any question about sex is that-one cannot hope to tell the truth," her essay is, in fact, an extraordinarily even-handed, thoughtful and perceptive reflection on the topic.
Woolf begins with a simple and enigmatic opinion: "A woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction; and that, as you will see, leaves the great problem of the true nature of woman and the true nature of fiction unresolved." From this spare beginning, Woolf deftly explores the difference between how women had been portrayed in fiction, and how they actually lived in the world, during the preceding centuries. "A very queer, composite being emerges. Imaginatively, she is of the highest importance; practically she is completely insignificant. She pervades poetry from cover to cover; she is all but absent from history. She dominates the lives of kings and conquerors in fiction; in fact she was a slave of any boy whose parents forced a ring upon her finger."
The source of dissonance between how women were portrayed in fiction, and how they actually lived, was the fact that most fiction prior to the nineteenth century was written by men. As Woolf astutely points out, "[i]t was strange to think that all the great women of fiction were, until Jane Austen's day, not only seen by the other sex, but seen only in relation to the other sex." Woolf's observation is no feminist polemic; it is, rather, an incisive comment on how fiction was impoverished when it was written only by men.
Even when fiction was written by women, it was powerfully influenced by patriarchal notions of virtue and the proper role of women. Thus, Woolf suggests there could be no female Shakespeare in sixteenth century England because no women would be tolerated who lived in the real world like the Bard. "No girl could have walked to London and stood at a stage door and forced her way into the presence of actor-managers without doing herself violence and suffering an anguish which may have been irrational-for chastity may be a fetish invented by societies for unknown reasons-but were none the less inevitable." Indeed, this "relic of the sense of chastity" dictated that more daring female authors-George Eliot, George Sand, Currer Bell-maintain anonymity as late as the nineteenth century.
When female writers did find a "room of their own," they were still limited by social and cultural imperatives. Thus, the first of the great women novelists-Jane Austen, the Brontes, George Eliot-wrote largely from the drawing room, not from the experiences of the larger world-the very conditions of their writing life being as cramped as the their restricted lives. As Woolf notes, in commenting on Charlotte Bronte, "[s]he knew, no one better, how enormously her genius would have profited if it had not spent itself in solitary visions over distant fields; if experience and intercourse and travel had been granted her. But they were not granted, they were withheld."
Ultimately, Woolf suggests that the "true" nature of women will only be approached in fiction when women are sufficiently independent-not only in a financial sense, but in the sense of being freed from societal and cultural restraints-to explore the quotidian, the everyday lives of people in the world. This is the aspect of the fictional world that, in Woolf's view, was absent from the male-dominated novel prior to the nineteenth century.
Woolf further suggests that the "true" nature of fiction is expressed only through those writers who can transcend their narrow sexual roles-become "man-womanly" or "woman-manly"-so as to convey the fullness of the real world. As Woolf notes, "Coleridge perhaps meant this when he said that a great mind is androgynous. It is when this fusion takes place that the mind is fully fertilised and uses all of its faculties." Based on this criterion, Woolf promulgates her own canon of English male writers, a canon which includes Shakespeare, Keats, Sterne, Cowper, Lamb, Coleridge, and Proust (who "was perhaps wholly androgynous, if not perhaps a little too much of a woman").
"A Room of One's Own" is, in sum, a fascinating, thoughtful and perceptive essay on women and fiction written by one of the Twentieth century's most formidable writers and thinkers, a woman who truly succeeded in creating a room of her own in the canon of modern English literature.

Accessible Woolf!

Some of Virginia Woolf's writing is difficult for the modern reader to plough through - loooong sentences, convoluted construction, excessive naval gazing (in fictional form). But A Room of One's Own, a very long essay about feminism, independence, writing, and becoming one's own person, is actually quite readable, quite educational, and quite wonderful. The reader, at least this one, feels she's in the presence of a great mind at work as it ruminates on and on about these topics in a somewhat rambling but engaging personal reflection. Although written in 1929, the situation for women artists hasn't changed all that much, so it's far from dated.
A must-read.

Witty and Intelligent Argument on Behalf of Female Writers

Virginia Woolf is a writer of intelligence and grace. A Room of One's Own is a skinny little treasure of a book with words and wisdom that will stay with the reader long after it is read. The essay contained in the book is the result of two papers that Ms. Woolf read to the Arts Society at newnham and Odtaa at Girton (England) in October of 1928. She was asked to speak about the topic of "Women and Fiction", and after doing so, she expanded her papers and later published them as this book.
Woolf begins the essay by writing, "I soon saw that [the subject of women and fiction] had one fatal drawback. I should never be able to come to a conclusion. I should never be able to fulfil what is, I understand, the first duty of a lecturer- to hand you after an hour's discourse a nugget of pure truth to wrap up between the pages of your notebooks and keep on the mantelpiece for ever. All I could do was to offer you an opinion upon one minor point- a woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction... At any rate, when a subject is highly controversial- and any question about sex is that- one cannot hope to tell the truth. One can only show how one came to hold whatever opionion one does hold. One can only give one's audience the chance of drawing their own conslusions as they observe the limitations, the prejudices, the idiosyncrasies of the speaker."
It is in this straightforward and honest manner that Woolf writes about women and fiction. Although the speech was given and the book was published in 1929, all of its points are still important for women- and especially women writers and artists- today. In A Room of One's Own Woolf examines classic literary works of the past and wonders why most, until the 19th Century, were written by men, and why most of the works published by women in the 19th Century were fiction. She comes to the logical conclusion that women in the past had little to no time to write because of their childbearing and raising responsibilities. There is also the fact that they were not educated and were forbidden or discouraged from writing. When they did begin to write, they only had the common sitting rooms of Elizabethan homes to do so in, which did not provide much solitude or peace of mind, as it was open to any interruption and distraction that came along.
Woolf argues passionately that true independence comes with economic well-being. This is true for countries, governments, individuals, and writers, especially female writers. Without financial security it is impossible for any writer to have the luxury of writing for writing's sake. It is also a very inspiring book for any aspiring write to read. I end this review with Virginia Woolf's own hopes for women in the future:
"... I would ask you to write all kinds of books, hesitating at no subject however trivial or however vast. By hook or by crook, I hope that you will possess yourselves of money enough to travel and to idle, to contemplate the future or the past of the world, to dream over books and loiter at street corners and let the line of thought dip deep into the stream."

Original short story

Liked the original storyline, felt it could have been a full length story as it packed a lot into a few pages. Fast paced. Lost a star because one characters name kept changing from Lauren to Laura and I found that to be distracting.
