About the Author

I'm sorry to say this but..

This book fits well along with her working back ground. But I was expected more than just a molecular gastronomy. The way of cooking in this book might be super fancy and most stylish these days. But for me it was just different type of molecular gastronomy cookbook. And the assembly part of some recipes are unclear. I couldn't even find that some indicated ingredients in the picture that taken beautifully.

Exquisite performance

I used to work as a pastry chef long before liquid nitrogen became a kitchen staple. This a a professionals dream book. No stories, just a brief biography. Detailed recipes that are not designed or written for everyday bakers. Ingredients that might be daunting to find. But everything is still workable with care and patience. Without the beautiful graphics this is a set of kitchen directions that expects the cook to know what he or she is up to. Proceed with care!

About the Author
George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950) is one of the world’s greatest literary figures. Born in Dublin, Ireland, he left school at fourteen and in 1876 went to London, where he began his literary career with a series of unsuccessful novels. In 1884 he became a founder of the Fabian Society, the famous British socialist organization. After becoming a reviewer and drama critic, he published a study of the Norwegian dramatist Henrik Ibsen in 1891 and became determined to create plays as he felt Ibsen did: to shake audiences out of their moral complacency and to attack social problems. However, Shaw was an irrepressible wit, and his plays are as entertaining as they are socially provocative. Basically shy, Shaw created a public persona for himself: G.B.S., a bearded eccentric, crusading social critic, antivivisectionist, language reformer, strict vegetarian, and renowned public speaker. The author of fifty-three plays, hundreds of essays, reviews, and letters, and several books, Shaw is best known for Widowers’ Houses (1892), Mrs. Warren’s Profession (1893), Arms and the Man (1894), Caesar and Cleopatra (1898), Man and Superman (1903), Major Barbara (1905), Pygmalion (1913), Heartbreak House (1919), and Saint Joan (1923). He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1925.

Pure Bergsonism

George Bernard Shaw was called, with good reason, the "English Nietzsche". Though Nietzsche was an aristocrat and Shaw a socialist, both cherished the dream of the superman and looked forward to the day when he would be realised. Both, however, were characterised by their mordant wit and intellectual cynicism, in which "Man and Superman" abounds. Shaw manages to compress a number of disparate themes into a relatively taut dramatic format, even throwing in a scene in which Don Juan, the Devil and a gang of anarchist brigands make an appearance. The central event of the plot involves the wealthy Tanner, a member of the "Idle Rich Class" making himself subservient to the Life Force and seeking the perfect woman to marry, who would guarantee him a very special offspring, his ideal, the superman himself. Though Shaw was not known to have read the works of Bergson at that time, nor to have been conversant with his vitalist doctrine of the Life Force, his use of the Life Force motif and the philosophical underpinnings of the play attest to a pure Bergsonism. The most delightful part, however, is the "Revolutionist's Handbook" at the end, which contains Shaw's most scandalous anti-Establishment jibes. For instance, "Do not do unto others as you would them do unto you. They might not have the same taste."

Controversy?

Shaw has packed many high-level topics into this play, while at the same time keeping long portions of the dialogue fairly low-level. Two topics jump out most frequently: hell and enjoyment. His take on each respective topic is fresh, seemingly from an entirely new perspective.

In the third act, the characters' conversation stands out in a couple ways. The explanation of hell from Don Juan, the Statue, and The Devil's point of view is unique. From a Judeo-Christian standpoint, it reeks of blasphemy, twisting around the traditional views to show things as they really are: The devil finally gets to tell his side of the story; heaven is boring; anyone can go between the two afterlives whenever they please. What is interesting is that Shaw's hell can fit with the Judeo-Christian/Biblical facts, something that the blasphemy police certainly will not give any credence to or spend any time investigating. His idea that heaven and hell are created for those who are going there matches perfectly with Biblical theology. A person not living in the grace of Jesus would hate heaven just as much as a person living in his grace would hate hell. Biblical theologians would not agree (if one could get them to listen) that people can choose their own eternity, nor would they agree with the concept of non-believers enjoying themselves in hell, even if one could get them to voice their belief that they will be given over to all the desires of their flesh.

What is fascinating about Shaw's hell is just that idea - that if life is about your passions and enjoyment (namely, the flesh) then your afterlife will be personal to those same passions and enjoyment. At this point, the conservative Judeo-Christians would be sharpening their inquisition equipment in a fervent rage because much of the play speaks to that idea of personal enjoyment during life, specifically the English. Don Juan says that humans live to try to understand life more but later adds to that idea by saying that understanding only helps us to know that we are enjoying ourselves. Life then becomes the pursuit of enjoyment, and hell mimics that pursuit as a sort of eternal amusement park. In a statement that seems like a pre-response to his opponent's case, Don Juan then says that although he spent his whole life looking for pleasure, he never found it. If it could ever happen, it is that response which could appease the frantic theologians. The devil, being the father of lies has pulled the eternal wool over everyone's eyes, both the living and the dead, and has gotten them to abandon their real purpose.

Shaw's flirtation with both sides of the controversy is what allows this play such success. He angers both the proponents and opponents of Christian "myths" and then offers possible solutions to appease both sides.

humorous girl power Don Juan play

I read this play after enjoying Pygmalion. Shaw creates a female lead who uses her femininity and supposed delicacy/cluelessness to manipulate those around her, ultimately trapping the Don Juan-esque male lead into marrying her despite his objections to the institution. Although she pretends to be helpless, she actually controls the situation, so I think this counts as a feminist work, although I'm confused about what his ultimate message is. I'm also not sure how the whole philosophy of the life-force, superman thing fits in, but I haven't read much philosophy, and I enjoyed the play regardless. Like all of Shaw's stuff, the play contains social commentary, humor, and wit.

About the Author

Marie LeNôtre is the Founder and Director of the Culinary Institute LeNôtre, created with her husband, Alain LeNôtre, in 1998. Marie has a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of Houston, a bachelor’s degree in Drama from the University of Athens, Greece, a master’s degree in Public Health Education, from the University of Texas and a master’s degree in English and Creative Writing from the University of Houston.
In 2001, Marie LeNôtre, with a group of business and philanthropist friends in Houston, created the Culinary Endowment & Scholarship, a Texas non-profit organization that raises scholarship funds for worthy students who aspire to a culinary career. In 2009, The Board renamed the foundation Gaston LeNôtre Scholarship to honor the late famed chef Gaston LeNôtre. Marie was the 2004/2005 and 2005/2006 President of the Houston, Texas, Chapter of Les Dames d’ Escoffier, a society of professional women of achievement in the food and beverage industry. She was honored by the French Government in 2012 with The National Order of Merit at an event officiated by acclaimed Chef Daniel Boulud.
Marie is married to Alain LeNôtre and lives in Houston and Galveston, Texas, and Ajaccio, France.

one of the greatest culinary families of France

The name LeNôtre is famous worldwide. Gaston and Colette LeNôtre, created a food empire, one of the greatest culinary families of France. Their son and daughter-in-law, Alain and Marie, carried the tradition to the United States where they created the Culinary Institute LeNôtre in Houston, Texas. Marie’s book Appetites is an autobiography, a love story, a business history about the LeNôtre’s struggle in the new world, and a confessional about her interior struggle.

Living in Houston I have crossed paths with Marie over the past 20 plus years. Her book answers my many questions about how she and Alain came to make Houston their home. And, tells me of her life and interior turmoil, one she hid quite well behind her graceful charm. I think it is human nature to look on the beautiful or handsome among us and think they have a charmed life. Marie’s exterior beauty has not spared her or Alain great difficulties, which she reveals with refreshing candor.

Who would have dreamed she is a recognized film star in her native Greece making her first movie at the age of 13. Her mother pushed her to be a movie star almost to Marie’s ruin given the predators in the industry. After a winding path she eventually found Alain, a Godsend, and he, too, had a journey to find her. But how they met is delightfully 21st century.

How Marie balances her desire to put family first, business second, and her quest for artistic, intellectual and spiritual fulfillment into the mix makes for an interesting journey and easy read. The LeNôtre family saga is told with grace, as is Marie’s search for inner peace. I enjoyed it tremendously and heartily recommend Marie LeNôtre’ s Appetites.

I loved Marie LeNotre's book

I loved Marie LeNotre's book, Appetites! She is so honest in revealing herself and her experiences. I am so happy to know the truth. She reveals her story of self discovery and her journey of faith. I learned about her movie career, her challenges in her relationships with family and others, the hurt she experienced, her educational expansion and her spiritual growth. It was wonderful to learn about the LeNotre family and the disappointment Alain (Marie's husband) experienced from his father's decisions. And above all to learn how Marie and Alain forgave ......
Marie's book is a gift to her children and grandchildren! They are so lucky she wrote her memoir!
The book is so well-written! I was impressed with her writing! Beautifully written!

Fun & Fascinating!

I really enjoyed this book. Well-written and readable, it tells the story of Marie Lenôtre’s early acting career, how she met Alain Lenôtre and how they came to found the Culinary Institute Lenôtre. Full of intriguing anecdotes about life in Greece, France and the United States as well as numerous photos, the story moves along quickly with twists and turns as Alain and Marie face life’s problems and do their best to overcome them! Both Alain and Marie come across as very human in the book and I enjoyed learning more about them. My favorite story is the one about how they met – you’ll have to read the book to find out! A good read – fun and fascinating!

A hilarious satire of television and a touching romantic comedy, it begins in a television studio where a hospital soap opera is being taped. One actor starts speaking gibberish; he is an "actoid" a robot and his programming is off kilter. Adam, the young nephew of the producer and an aspiring writer who worships the director (once a great movie director and now a broken down has been), is on the set. Adam starts chatting with Jacie Tripplethree, the actoid (serial number JC333) playing the nurse and finds, to his surprise, that not only can she carry on a conversation but, due to what she calls a fault in her programming, she has a creative imagination. Adam wants to build a new television series around her but the studio will not hear of it. He also finds he is falling in love with the charming robot! Will Adam get the green light on his series? Will love prevail? Jacie is one of Ayckbourn's greatest characters; her portrayer won all of London's major acting awards.

About the Author

Born in London in 1939, Alan Ayckbourn spent most of his childhood in Sussex and was educated at Haileybury. Leaving there one Friday at the age of seventeen, he went into the theatre the following Monday and has been working in it ever since as, variously, a stage manager, sound technician, scene painter, prop-maker, actor, writer and director. These last two talents he developed thanks to his mentor, Stephen Joseph, whom he first met in 1958 upon joining his newly formed Studio Theatre Company in Scarborough. A BBC Radio Drama Producer from 1965 to 1970, upon the death of Stephen Joseph, he returned to Scarborough to become the company's Artistic Director. He holds the post to this day, though the theatre is now named after its founder. He is the author of over fifty plays, most of which received their first performance at this Yorkshire theatre, were he spends the greater part of the year directing other people's work. More than half of his plays have subsequently been produced in the West End, at the Royal National Theatre or at the Royal Shakespeare Company. They have been translated into over thirty languages, are seen on stage and television throughout the world, and have received many national and international awards. Alan Ayckbourn was appointed a CBE in 1987 and in 1997 became to first playwright knighted since Terence Rattigan. He lives in London.

"Comic Potential" is masterful and thoughtful!

Real life situations, classic characters, and a futuristic twist make readers as well as audiences wonder what the future will bring. This has got to be my favorite Ayckbourn play yet. It is also a great acting tool because you see the play through the eyes of the playwright. However, it may not be appropriate for young readers do to adult language and situations.

A smart, funny sci-fi comedy

"Comic Potential," by Alan Ayckbourn, represents a species of literature that I don't believe I have ever before encountered: a science fiction comedy for the stage. The opening pages note that the play was first performed at the Stephen Joseph Theatre in Scarborough in 1998, and was then presented in London in 1999. A brief author bio notes that the London-born Ayckbourn has had a distinguished career in the British theater.
The book version's back cover notes that this play takes place "in the forseeable future." In this future world human actors have apparently been replaced by acting robots known as "actoids," which are programmed by technical specialists. Early in the play a young writer named Alan meets an actoid in whom he sees a potential for comedy. Alan's plans, and his relationship with his robotic protegee, drive the plot forward and complicate the lives of many characters.
This is a funny and thought-provoking play that combines comedy and mild suspense. Ayckbourn offers a fascinating glimpse at a culture which, because of the presence of human-like robots, has evolved its own set of new social protocols and prejudices. Clever dialogue and well-written characters further add to the impact of this entertaining, and surprisingly moving, text.

Fun with the Future

I admire Ayckbourns' work and this reminded me of one of his best plays; "Communicating Doors". It's funny, sad and hopeful and I'd love to see it performed. The man is a true genius and thankfully he's prolific as well!
