We are heavy salad eaters around our house. Playing around with different salad dressing recipes is not only fun, but healthy. This book aims to teach 50 different recipes, that you can follow completely or tweak to your tastes.

I love that this book builds a foundation recipe that is great tasting by itself, but also fun to play with by adding or taking away the ingredients it calls for. We have utilized each one, and loved them all.

A lot of times a recipe book will okinclude a few you love, and more you can do without. This book has recipes that are all enjoyable, and we use them very regularly. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is salad eaters occasionally, all the way to every now and then. Great read! I was offered this product free in exchange for my honest and unbiased evaluation.

I absolutely love this guide to making my own fresh dressings! I don't limit these for just salads either, some of these recipes are excellent as a marinade or for pasta salads. I already have a few favorites, but I truly intend to try all 50!

A Sloppy Effort By Someone Who Doesn't Know Much About Vegan Cheese

I can guarantee that these authors have never made vegan cheese, although they pretend that they have. They make a crucial, basic error: "1/2 cup nutritional yeast flakes (you can find them under the name "brewer's yeast" in stores)" and "Note: for those who are interested in a "cheesier" taste, you can add 2-3 tablespoons of brewer's yeast to strengthen/enhance the taste".

Nutritional yeast and brewer's yeast are NOT the same product! Nutritional yeast has a creamy, 'cheesy' taste but brewer's yeast is extremely bitter. If they had truly made the cheese recipe mentioned above, and added brewer's yeast, they would have discovered their error because it would have tasted a-w-f-u-l! Some manufacturer's claim to have removed some of the bitterness but brewer's yeast tastes more like molasses than cheese and won't add a cheesy flavor to anything.

There are so many more mistakes in this manuscript that it's hard to know where to start.

* The Vegan Basil Pesto Cheese has no basil listed in the ingredients?
* One recipe has ingredients and directions, but no title at all - perhaps two of the recipes are this way; the whole book is so confusing I'm not certain?
* Another page begins with "cheesy flavor, and good for people ..." but it's not clear what they're referring to?
* The grammar is awful: "3/4 cup of soaked of cashews" or add an ingredient to "takes" - I assume they mean "taste"?
* Some recipes use standard American measurements like cups, teaspoons, etc; others use European measurements like milliliters and grams; and some use both. Unless you're comfortable with both systems you will have to stop and do some translation?

There are other minor errors that aren't really important, but they do speak to the lack of caring of the authors. For instance, in some titles, all the words are capitalized while in other recipes, some words are capitalized while others are in lower case. Or, they switch back and forth between "/" and "\". These are trivial points but they speak volumes about quality. Save your time and money and buy a book from someone who actually knows what they're talking about, like The Uncheese Cookbook by Joanne Stepaniak.

Badly written and formatted.

Writer uses the terms 'brewers yeast' and 'nutritional yeast' interchangeably and they are NOT the same thing. One recipe calls for ONE cup of nuts and FOUR cups of olive oil to make cheese. That's not gonna work!

Not worthy of keeping -- too many problems.

This is a really weird book with all the formatting problems, pictures with a big red "X" in them and "Ditching Diary Has Never Been Easier" which tells me the translator/editor needs to be fired. "Diary" is NOT "Dairy" in any language. I won't repeat the same problems others have identified. Suffice it to say this one is going right out the Kindle Window. Needs a major overhaul and re-issue to be a real book.

Not only did I not get the corrected and revised copy, I have now discovered that these recipes and pictures all came off Internet sites and Riki Berko never prepared one of these. In order to disguise this theft of recipes off the Internet, he changed the original statement "Whisk in the tapioca flour." to "Shuffle in the tapioca flour." How do you shuffle tapioca flour -- by the teaspoon, mixing spoon, spatula or a whisk as the original recipe stated. These recipe rip-off cut and pasters think this covers their theft but it doesn't. All the quantities are the same, all the directions are in the same order with the same times and almost all of the words exactly the same (except when they change "Whisk" that makes sense to "Shuffle" that doesn't make sense) so they are derivative and a violation of copyright law.

Why would anyone want to buy from a thief?

About the Author

Alfred de Musset (1810-1857) was a French poet, playwright, and novelist. He was born in Paris to a well-to-do family and turned to writing after first studying to be a doctor. Influenced by Lord Byron and Shakespeare, he fraternized with many great French writers such as Victor Hugo. He died in 1857 of a heart malfunction.

Yoshioki Oozeki is the Chief Scientist of the Fish Ecology Section, National Research Institute of Fisheries Science, Fisheries Research Agency, Japan, and Professor of Marine Life Science at the Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology. He is a fisheries biologist with expertise in the larval biology and ecology of small pelagic fish, and has lead the egg and larval survey project in waters around Japan for 12 years. He has also investigated larva physiology, database management, stock assessment, sampling gear technology, and variation of fish in relation to climate. He received the Uda Award from the Japanese Society of Fisheries Oceanography in 2007.

This is a great cookbook, one for moms and dads with little time. It also makes a fine present. My nephew found it useful when he was in college. No muss, no fuss. Cooking made easy. My daughter had a child since this cookbook was originally published. She doesn't use paper cookbooks anymore. Can't wait to tell her about the e-version.

Love, love, love the idea of making quick recipes in muffin tins. So far, my fav is the easy "monkey bread," but if you like savory things ... you'll find plenty of ideas. This book would make a great graduation or wedding shower gift. If if you know someone who is just learning to cook, these recipes are NOT intimidating the way so many others are.

About the Author
William Shakespeare was born in April 1564 in the town of Stratford-upon-Avon, on England s Avon River. When he was eighteen, he married Anne Hathaway. The couple had three children an older daughter Susanna and twins, Judith and Hamnet. Hamnet, Shakespeare s only son, died in childhood. The bulk of Shakespeare s working life was spent in the theater world of London, where he established himself professionally by the early 1590s. He enjoyed success not only as a playwright and poet, but also as an actor and shareholder in an acting company. Although some think that sometime between 1610 and 1613 Shakespeare retired from the theater and returned home to Stratford, where he died in 1616, others believe that he may have continued to work in London until close to his death.

A Good Reading Edition of Shakespeare

Although the Folger Shakespeare Library editions are not my favourite mass market pb editions of Shakerspeare (I prefer the Bantam/Signet editions, with their wealth of commentary that follows the text of the play), for single reading editions of the plays they are easy and superbly presented. The text is printed in single column on the right, with extensive commentary/explanation and occasional illustration to the left. The introductions are functional and usually interesting. This play was never printed in Quarto in Shakespeare's lifetime, and its first publication was in the First Folio of 1623, assembled by two gentlemen players from Shakespeare's acting troupe (people often ask, "Where are the MSS of Shakespeare's plays, why didn't he leave them to someone in his will; but obviously his acting troupe owned the original copies, from which they assembled the First Folio). TIMON OF ATHENS has never been one of the poet's popular plays, but it is fascinating. The BBC production is quite good. This was the favourite play of Karl Marx! In his 2007 edition of the Complete Works, editor and scholar Jonathan Bate states that the play may have been written in collaboration with Thomas Middleton. It is a dark play sans humor, deeply pessimistic and troubling. There are some great speeches, especially in the latter half, particularly in Act IV. I believe one may view the entire BBC televised production, in segments, on YouTube.

Arkangel Timon of Athens a fine production

Among the least performed of all the Shakespeare plays, is probably the most disturbing. In the beginning, Timon is (not to put too fine a point on it) stupidly philanthropic; in the end he is equally misanthropic. When Timon is on top of the world, we have the cynical Apemantus to be our voice and let him know what a fool he is. In the last two acts, we simply wish (I do, at least) that our hero would stop complaining and let us "pass and stay not here," as he would have all men do in his epitaph.
But a recording is to be judged on its performances, not so much on its text. The Arkangel series, now in its last laps toward completion before (I am told) it is all redone on CDs, has every reason to be proud of its "Timon of Athens," thanks to its strong and intelligent readings. The opening scenes of artisans and poets building up the play's themes of wheel-of-fortune and gratitude/ingratitude are almost intelligible without a text open before you. Alan Howard, whom I saw in New York long ago as Henry V and as the main character in "Good," has that kind of friendly voice that is so well suited to the extravagant Timon in the open acts that we feel all the more for him when his false friends deny him in his need.
The snarling voice of Norman Rodway's Apemantus is a perfect counterpoint, and he casts out his invective in those early scenes with a hint of humor. However, when Timon becomes the misanthrope, his voice darkens and coarsens; and it is very hard to tell it from Apemantus' in their overly-long exchange of curses in 4:3. If the actor playing Alcibiades (Damian Lewis) sounds far too young for the role, that is a minor quibble--and perhaps the director wanted him to sound like a young Timon.
The incidental music sounds sufficiently Greek but too modern; still, Ingratitude knows no particular time period. A superior production of a much flawed play and a very welcome addition to any collection of recorded drama, especially since the old Decca set is long out of print and Harper audio does not yet have a "Timon" in their series.

A Personal Favorite

So I'm reading through the complete works of Shakespeare, and, of course, the iconic ones (King Lear, Othello, Hamlet, etc) are unhumanly brilliant in every possible way. But then, as I come to the less-popular plays (Coriolanus, Cymbeline, this one) I was prepared for some ultra boring, mediocre experience. How foolish I was to doubt The Bard! Reading Timon of Athens was like discovering a huge diamond in your backyard. I'd never heard anyone talk about it, never seen it alluded to, and yet, here it is, oozing with opulence.

I loved loved loved this play. The plot is delicious, the language is fantastic, some of Shakespeare's best insults can be found here, and I really enjoyed seeing the vast change in Timon's character. It is a short play, and yes, there probably are a few inky areas subject to criticism, but even the "worst" of Shakespeare is going to be 100000x better than anything you can read. Some people allege that it is an "unfinished" play, but that's completely wrong. It is most certainly finished. The conclusion may not be as thematic at most of the "tragedies," but it is still a fine conclusion.

I highly, highly recommend reading this play. It's super short so you'll be able to finish it in as little as a day, and it's always exciting to read a classic that people haven't pored and pored over. Timon definitely deserves more credit, in my opinion, as it's now one of my favorite Shakespeares.

***PS: I should mention I followed along with the AMAZING Arkangel audio production, which no doubt aided in the great experience. You should definitely check it out, the guy who plays Timon is fantastic, and the rest of the cast is great too.

About the Author
H. E. Bates was born in 1905 in Northamptonshire. He worked as a journalist and clerk on a local newspaper before publishing his first book, The Two Sisters, when he was twenty. In the next fifteen years he acquired a distinguished reputation for his stories about English country life. During the Second World War he was a Squadron Leader in the R.A.F. The Darling Buds of May, the first of the popular Larkin family novels, was followed by A Breath of French Air (1959), When the Green Woods Laugh (1960), Oh! To Be in England (1963). His works have been translated into sixteen languages. H. E. Bates was awarded the C.B.E. in 1973 and died in January 1974.

Have you ever cried from laughing too hard?

Absurd and hilarious, H.E. Bates introduces you to the strangest family you're ever likely to meet. A tax officer is sent to their house to collect overdue taxes, only to find himself thrown into their somewhat chaotic, but extremely loving and fun life. Set up with the daughter, he throws away his old life to join theirs. Wonderfully written, humorous and kind, one to be read when you're feeling down, or if you're outside enjoying a summer day - best enjoyed with an iced drink and a picnic blanket. H.E. Bates is sure bet for an excellent read - I have read eight novels by Bates now, and have yet to be disppointed.

Fifties British humor

Now a BBC video, the Larkin family rollick through Britain of the '50's. I think you have to be both an Anglophile and addicted to out-of-print British
authors--both of which am I!--to enjoy this. Nothing less like Angela Thirkell can be thought of--these are the adventures of the Lower Class.
And highly enjoyable they are.

You don't know what you're missing

I first read The Darling Buds of May about thirty years ago. Recently BBC added some episodes and turned it into a series starring David Jason, which was acknowledged as the very best of British Comnedy. Incidentally, Catherine Zeta Jones got her big TV break in this series as the beautiful Larkin daughter.
If you get a chance to get hold of a copy of H.E.Bates classic tale of Pop Larkin and his family, you should do so, just for the joy of reading something that is so funny it will split your sides.
