Sugar decorations

I have a husband that loves cakes, so in time I learned how to prepare them. I am now taking everything the to next level, and creating sugar decorations to make his cake nicer every time. This book is a very helpful and useful guide on this matter as it proved to be really helpful in teaching me how to get to a stage where I can say I am proud of the way my cakes look like. Very practical, filled with advice and as well some very helpful pictures to guide me along the way, this is definitely a book that can help any cake get better.

On Genius and the Workings of the Creative Process

Nowadays, there is much discussion in the public domain on the concept of genius, on Creativity and on Innovation. We see people like Steve Jobs, Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos and many others being labelled as 'creative' or 'genius-like' or 'innovative'. At the same time, we do not see much elaboration on the precise reasons for marking these individuals out for such special mention except by reiterating the products and ideas for which they are responsible and how much their thinking diverges from the mainstream. What we don't find is a substantive discussion on what this 'Creative Process' really is and how it actually works and what its psychological foundations are. It is this quest which brought me to read this book.

I have always enjoyed reading Sudhir Kakar's insights into cultural psychology, mysticism and psychoanalysis. When I saw that he was one of the authors of this book, I wanted to see what his insight into the subject is. However, it turned out that this book is a collection of six essays on Creativity from six different authors, with Kakar contributing just one, on the Indian perspective of the creative artist. Three articles dwell on the cross-cultural views on Creativity, one each on the Indian, Western and the Chinese. Two others are in the inter-disciplinary perspective from Psychoanalysis and Neuroscience. The final article by James Kaufman looks at Creativity through a generalist approach. Overall, we come across many definitions on what is creative and some approaches to understanding the creative process itself.

The Western perspective is dealt with by co-author Günter Blamberger who suggests that the West has always set wrong priorities by focusing on the personal origin of Creativity , leading to hopeless aporias and myths. The West has a tradition of seeing Creativity as a triad of divine inspiration, mastery of the rules of the domain and scholarly knowledge. Blamberger proposes that we must bid farewell to this concept of 'Genius' and move away from singular creatorship and towards viewing Creativity as an Experience and as a Process. Today's creative practices are mostly processes based on division of labor within collectives and Creativity itself must be viewed as an inter-disciplinary and cross-cultural question.

Sudhir Kakar presents the Indian perspective on artistic creativity based on the classical treatise on the Performing Arts, namely 'Natya Shastra', written around 200 BCE, and on the modern works of renowned art historian, Ananda Coomaraswamy (1877-1947). In the Indian view of the creative artist, he is not a flawed being or prone to melancholia or madness. Rather, to be truly creative, it was necessary for individual personality traits and complexes to be transcended. Coomaraswamy formulates it as '..the Indian artist, though a person, is not a personality'. Creative Imagination is an inborn faculty due to impressions of past births that is so strong in the artist that it responds to the slightest stimuli which are usually ignored by others. Kakar wonders as to how many contemporary Indian artists share this view of the artist as emotionally balanced and artistic creativity as a matter of connecting with the transcendent, spiritual unconscious.

The Chinese perspective of Creativity is outlined by Weihua Niu simply as the very nature of everlasting interaction between the creator and the context, as something evolutionary rather than revolutionary. The focus of Creativity in the Confucian outlook is on novelty and appropriateness, where appropriateness is understood as fitting according to the changing context in a collaborative manner, given a specific situation. On the other hand, the Taoist view of Creativity is to make a connection between oneself and nature, possibly by immersing oneself through meditation.

In the inter-disciplinary discussion, I liked the essay by Margaret Boden on 'Creativity as Neuroscientific Mystery'. Boden says that there are three types of creativity, namely Combinational, Exploratory and Transformational. They are explained as follows:
Combinational Creativity is the generation of unfamiliar combinations of familiar ideas. A scientific example would be viewing the Atom through the Solar system model.
Exploratory Creativity is to use existing rules to generate novel structures. Examples would be to write a new Computer program using a known programming language or writing a new essay in English or creating a new painting in a known style such as Impressionist.
Transformational Creativity is the most exciting of all in that it breaks culturally sanctioned rules within a domain and leads to the creation of a novel idea which seems 'Impossible'. One can think of many examples in Science and in the Arts like Literature and Music.
Boden says that these three forms of Creativity involve different types of psychological processes and that Combinational Creativity is within reach of Neuroscience today. As for Exploratory and Transformational, she says that the human brain is a Connectionist system and we need to understand much better than we do today as to how 'connectionism' can emulate a von Neumann machine before coming to a Neuroscientific view of these two types of Creativity.
Most of us can probably feel good about having experienced some aspect of Exploratory Creativity in our lives and some might have indulged in Combinational as well.

As I came to the last essay in the book, the creative process still remained largely an enigma. Still, the essays provoke our mind and induces us to explore further.

the old, the assimilated, the new

Gloria Goldreich has listened to her relatives and ancestors and also done a lot of historical research. From chapter 1, Leah's peregrinations take her from Russia, where her ancestors had moved to from Poland, to a New York City tenement, on to New York's affluent suburbs, then finally to Israel; as the story unfolds, she also visits the American South and makes a trip back to Russia to visit her aging parents. How interesting it is to observe how pieces of the past cling to present places and events and how Leah and her family consciously and sometimes not-so-intentionally shed parts of their pasts as they try out and embrace new ideas, new ways of living, and ways of being. At the start of the book it seemed to me the author had drawn the landscape and backdrop with far more clarity than she'd pictured the people, but as the chapters evolved and I kept reading, the characters became clearer and more alive to me. Possibly a combination of how the book was written and my greater familiarity with them as I turned pages?!

In Leah's Journey, violence, death, disappointments, losses, endings, and beginnings interweave to form more than a half-century long narrative that includes hard work, advocacy for safer working conditions for immigrants and for everyone, relatively fast upward mobility, and a fair amount of assimilation into the era's contemporary American culture that yet retains more than an overlay of the families' religious and cultural Jewish heritage.

Author Gloria Goldreich's prose reads pleasantly and easily. I'd be interested in checking out more of her writing in the popular magazines she has written for, or another of her books.

Engrossing

From Leah's life in Russia through her life in the United States, the character of Leah is well written and believable. Gloria Goldreich told the story of Leah and her family with simplicity and a warmth that brought the characters to life and made me feel like I actually met them. I was so wrapped up in the story of her life that I immediately bought the sequal (Leah's Children) which was just as good.

Exquisite!

This small volume is a treasure. In hardcover, the pages are silver, the dark blue typography is a beautiful old-style Roman, perhaps Garamond or Times, good-sized and leaded out for easy readability. And the illustrations are unsurpassed.

First, the illustrator: Gustave Dore was born in 1832, sixty years after the birth of Coleridge. He died in 1883. Coleridge preceded him in death by 49 years. Coleridge was born in 1772 and died in 1834. Dore was born in Strasbourg, and was a renowned illustrator who was doing lithographs at the age of thirteen.

The fact that Dore was a near contemporary of Coleridge is important because we can be assured that the characters' costumes in his illustrations reflect the actual dress of the time Coleridge was describing. The ships also are correctly drawn and beautifully detailed.

To say that his illustrations complement this classic epic poem is an understatement.

As to the poet, some wag said once of The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, that "a half-great poet had a wholly great day." I have also heard that Coleridge is supposed to have written his epic in one sitting, in a great burst of inspiration. I can't vouch for that, but it is truly a masterpiece--of that there can be no doubt.

I recall trying to memorize it when I was in high school, about sixty years ago. I loved it then, and I still do now.

For the price, this book is an absolute steal. No library is complete without this poem, and of all the renditions I've seen of it, this is by far the most beautiful.

Gustave Dore's Engravings offer Mesmerizing Images

I read and memorized portions of The Rime of the Ancient Mariner as a school boy. I thoroughly enjoyed my first reading and I still like it today. I only wish I had encountered these Dore illustrations years ago.
This oversized edition by Dover Publications reproduces all 42 Dore engravings in their original size. Gustave Dore's illustrations are absolutely mesmerizing. I enjoy slowly turning the pages and examining the phenomenal detail in these famous Dore engravings.
Every aspect of this edition is great. The Rime of the Ancient Mariner is an imaginative, haunting, and captivating narrative poem that has no parallel in the English language. The engravings by Gustave Dore - the open and endless sea, the vast icy reaches of Antarctica, the calm tropical sea with monsters swirling about, and the dead seamen sprawled on the ship's deck all translate the evocative words of Coleridge into unforgettable images. And the introduction by Millicent Rose is excellent.
Buy a copy. You won't be disappointed.

This review is just to point out that this edition is basically the same as the The Dover Edition with the following exceptions:

1. This edition is hardcover.
2. The Dore engravings are very slightly reduced in size in this edition.
3. This edition's introduction focuses mostly on Coleridge and the Dover edition's is all about Dore.
4. This edition has a few additional selections of Coleridge poetry at the end. These are nice and have engravings by a different artist.

I bought this version just so I would have a hardcover copy but appreciate the additional material.

Still No Pics Collected

Would just love to see some of these unusual recipes, before I venture to try them. Have read each recipe and most sound pretty good. The first section skip the eggs all together, leaning toward the healthy side. The next section is called Baby Muffins: I completely expected a bunch of mini-muffin pan recipes, but was I surprised to see actual jarred baby food in some of them. A couple of savory sections follow and finally a section called Unusual Muffins. Yep, most are pretty unusual, like muffins made with beer - frosted with beer frosting! Darn, a pic would be so nice, maybe a big'ol muffin with a shot glass on top, full of beer?

Great recipes for all kinds of muffins that are full of gteat . The wheat-oatmeal ones are fantastic as are the spicy cheddar ones. The Tex-mex one are full of flavor also along with the barbecue one. With so many to choose from you'll just have to decide for yourself which one you enjoy most. Thank you and enjoy your day.

There were a lot of unusual recipes, not ones that I am curious to try. Also, my suggestion, especially, if you want people to try these recipes, get some photos. We, as cooks and bakers, would be more willing to try, if we knew what the recipe looks like.

great book and tons of amazing recipes

Everyone loves Chinese food! well not everyone, but all of my friends and family do, so when I cooked a bunch of delicious Chinese food for them at my last house party they were all on cloud nine. They asked me how I learned to cook like that and I told them I read this amazing ebook!

Fast Chinese Recipes review

I was looking for some Chinese recipes and eventually I decided to give this book a try. After going through a couple of the recipes, I have to admit, I had to stop at the 'Chinese Egg Rolls' recipe and go the kitchen to check if I have all the necessary ingredients. I just had to try this because it looked so nice. Then I realized how easy this was to make and how delicious it is.

I love Chinese food but have never made any myself. I'm really glad I got this book in that regard because most of the recipes are easy to make and there is something for everyone's taste and for all skill levels.

The directions are very clear and easy to follow. Each recipe has a picture of how it looks like, and what I really liked was how the author also included nutritional facts for all of us like to follow our calorie intake. If you're a fan of the Chinese diet, this is the book to have.

Healthy Chinese recipe book with a great deal of variety

I'm new to Chinese cooking and wanted something I could throw together quickly without spending a lot of time in preparation. Meilin wu's book fits the bill admirably. I came across quite a few recipes that were new to me-dishes like the baked Chinese crab Rangoon and Chinese gingered rice (that was a hit!) There's a good range of quick-to-cook dishes, and I'm looking forward to trying out more.
It's cool to see the nutritional data for each recipe and I liked Wu's suggestions. She gives her ideas on how to customize dishes-make a soup more substantial, add more zing to a sauce and how you can even transform leftovers! Great for a lazy cook like me who doesn't enjoy slaving over the stove...
