Mom's Potato Salad!!!

I was raised in the south. It was rare when we lived above the "Mason Dixon" line. My mother could cook blindfolded and the meal would taste like heaven! Her potato salad was "to die for". While I'm a great cook on my own, I still couldn't get Moms potato salad right! By reading all the tips and recipes, experimenting, etc. I finally am able to make Mom's potato salad! These recipes are wonderful!

Nothing exceptional here. Most of the instructions were in European terminal

Nothing exceptional among these recipes. Many of the instructions and terms were European so somewhat difficult to apply. The instructions for boiling eggs was particularly unusual compared to southern American cooking techniques and much more difficult. I'll stick with my Great American Potato salad recipe.

While my mum's salad isn't described (being closest to the 'Oliver' salad), the recipes presented give me new ideas for a family favourite.

About the Author
Lorraine McKay is a self-taught sugar artist from Scotland who turned her sugar art hobby into a thriving business - The Icing on the Cake. She has won several Gold Awards in the Novelty Cake and Wedding Cake categories at the annual Cake Show at the NEC Birmingham, and in 2006 was asked to demonstrate her work at the Edinburgh branch of the British Sugarcraft Guild – she is now an accredited British Sugarcraft Guild demonstrator. Lorraine also writes a blog: Extra Icing on the Cake, and provides a number of popular online tutorials. She began offering workshops at her studio in 2007 and has since gone on to teach classes all over the world.

If you are thinking about getting this book, stop thinking and just get it! Received mine today, it is chock full of great pictures and easy to follow instructions. I struggle with gumpaste figures, but I just made the baby in this book for practice and it looks just like the one in the book! Sooooo easy! Can't wait to do them all.

Very short but very sweet, every line filled with emotion.

Sky Goddesses Of Dryden is an anthology of graphic stories each with a point expressed to the point of poignancy. They all have to do somewhat a chasm imposed upon young love due to distance or due to outside fiat, but all these chasms are bridgeable with sufficient imagination or even determination. The drawings are clean, simple, and attractive, and express well the storyline of each chapter. I think I'd want them for my own graphic team. Five Stars.

Horray for woman powered Sci-fi! I was involved in the development of this project and just love it!!! Laura and Danielle tell four great little sci-fi stories in a delightful way. My favorite is "Journey of an Astronaut." It left me feeling like there's a little astronaut in all of us. Very gratifying! I highly recommend!

About the Author
Louis MacNeice was born in Belfast in 1907, the son of a Church of Ireland rector, later a bishop. He was educated in England at Sherborne, Marlborough and Merton College, Oxford. His first book of poems, Blind Fireworks, appeared in 1929, and he subsequently worked as a translator, literary critic, playwright, autobiographer, BBC producer and feature writer. The Burning Perch, his last volume of poems, appeared shortly before his death in 1963.

I was not disappointed. MacNeice captures all the deep pathos of war-time ...

I confess to being completely unaware of MacNeice's work until I read Rosamund Pilcher's The Shell Seekers. The poem that was quoted there was so moving, so lyrical, that I wanted to read more, and when I purchased this book, I was not disappointed. MacNeice captures all the deep pathos of war-time England and the profundity of human emotion in a way that sings...quietly. There is no accounting for taste, as the saying goes, but for one who loves true poetry, this will be a treasure.

Quite possibly the greatest volume of poetry of the 1930s.

The autumn in question is 1938 - a dramatic end of an increasingly tense year. For Louis Macneice 1938 was an artistic 'annus mirabilis' in terms of both the quantity and quality of his writing ('The Earth Compels' is a superb volume of poems & stands very well alongside this book; then there are two prose volumes: 'Zoo' - nothing major, but a most enjoyable book about London Zoo; finally there is joint effort with Auden - 'Voyage to Iceland').

Head and shoulders above his other works published that year is this poetic journal. In it, Macneice reflects on the approach of war, of the shame and empty hope of the Munich agreement and of of the descent of Spain into an ever-darkening civil war. He combines reflections on the turmoil of these major historic events with reflections on the turmoil of his personal life - recollections of a failed marriage, an unrewarding career as a university lecturer in Classics at Birmingham University, and a very recently failed relationship.

Although war had been avoided, it was clear that it remained inevitable - the bombs will soon begin to fall. The journal's final entry achieves a measure of philosophical acceptance, beginning thus:

'Sleep, my body, sleep my ghost,
Sleep, my parents and grand-parents,
And all those I have loved most:
One man's coffin is another's cradle.'

If this is the first book of Macneice's that you read, I am sure it will not be the last.

Autumn

This is a long poem written in narrative style what is very easy for a modern to absorb. It has both public and private sides in it.
I needed to look up a few contemporary names and incidents.

I also found some profound ways to look at contemporary politics. If you enjoy W.B. Yeats you might well like Louis Macneice, and be surprised to learn that such a person exists. You are unlikely to have encountered him in college and so this collection is an excellent introduction. I think Macneice would considered politically incorrect for all the wrong reasons.

Heywood's masterpiece

Heywood was a very prolific contemporary of Shakespeare. This play is one of his best, and is quite often revived for performance over in the British Isles. It is an intriguing story of love, friendship, hate, disloyalty, and treachery. Heywood skillfully walks us through the emotions, and there are few surprises lurking in the text, as not everything happens as we expect, and the price of honor turns out to be high, but not higher then of love. As is the custom of Elizabethean drama we have a main plot, and we also have a subplot, which serves to highlight the main plot. These two are complimentary, and highlight each others failings very nicely. When characters of the main plot make the wrong choices, the sub plot shows us the right choice in a similar situation, and thus the play is doubly effective. Highly recommended to see that there were other great playwrights besides Shakespeare in the Elizabethean drama, and that they are only unknown today, because Shakespeare was such a giant, that he overshadows, even very competent writers, who would have shinned brightly in any other period.

A non-Shafferian play by Shaffer!

Shaffer's work seems to be synonimous with mystery, impact, ritual and theatrical pyrotechnics. How strange, then, to see him in this, his first major play, to see him attempting something very close to a kitchen sink drama.
Indeed, there is a smack of Ibsenesque drawing-room realism so far removed from the 'total theatre' of Equus and Royal Hunt that some readers may find disconcerting. But, nevertheless, Shaffer's tender understanding of the emotional pressures of middle-class family life make this play just as extraordinary and gripping as any of the later, more popular successes.
The play does exhibit Shaffer's characteristic love of linguistic versatility and, as with all his plays, is extremely relevent. I for one cannot but feel moved by the characters' tender denunciation of love and sexuality.
A must for anyone wanting to find new layers to an original and penetrating writer.

What is a Five Finger Exercise? Perhaps it is an allusion to the hands unique members, each with a different shape and function, frequently working together yet separate and able to be isolated? Perhaps it is a reference to a musical practice for the mastery of individual fingers within the complexity of a piano score. Maybe it is an overt symbol for a story of five people, bound by a home, a palm, in which they branch off and come together in differing combinations to quarrel and agree-a family.
Whatever the case, the Peter Shaffer play Five Finger Exercise is a unique and interesting early work by the master behind The Royal Hunt of the Sun, Equus and Amadeus. The Harrington family is decidedly upper middle class English. Father Stanley is the self-made bread winner through his successful furniture business, while mother Louise is a continental Francophile, concerned with culture and liberal ideals. They are the "saloon and the salon," respectively. Son Clive, 19, is a burgeoning man, newly at Cambridge, whose adolescent angst reflects his own internal hormonal coming of age and his lifelong presence amidst his parent's rows. Daughter Pamela is fourteen and the apple of all eyes, without the cynicism and hurt of the others, unknowing of the bad world outside and coming into romantic notions through her new tutor Walter, a German expatriate. Walter is a few years older than Clive, but worldly and understanding like none of the Harrington's.
Without going into the arch of the tale, Five Finger Exercise is a vision of post WWII England's concerns for it future, whether conservative labor or liberal sensitivities can satisfy the progress (and horrors) of the 20th Century, women's pressing need to be more than mindless servants or children's hopes for their own identities-even when they conflict with a parents ideals-are possible. Walter is the key finger here, the outsider who is more understanding, able to see the trauma of family life and capable of loving it, he knows the world all too well, and serves as an agent of awareness for the closed minded Stanley, the dreamy Louise, the pained Clive and the blossoming Pamela.
Unlike his famous works, which have traces of Clive and his sexual awakenings (Alan in Equus and Amadeus in Amadeus), or Stanley's stagnant middle aged professional (Dysart in Equus), this piece is smaller in scope, but only if one considers "family life" to be anything but epic.
