A Compilation of D.H. Lawrence's Best Work

The compilation includes his full length novel: Sons and Lovers as well as a variety of short stories, poems and a work of nonfiction entitled Psychoanalysis and the Unconscious.

Lawrence, known in his time for the perverse and, often, sexual nature of his writing incurred the descriptor of scandalous throughout his life. He is best known for his novel Lady Chatterley’s Lover, though his other works of fiction, poetry, and nonfiction have come to receive great acclaim as well.

In this Dover Thrift Edition of D.H. Lawrence’s work, The Prussian Officer, published in 1914, is a pointed example of the scandalous themes and ideas that led Lawrence’s work to be banned throughout the world. The short story focuses on a military captain who has sexual feelings for his orderly, and treats him monstrously out of jealousy for the orderly’s relationship with his girlfriend, as well as out of spite and anger for the captain’s own feelings. An exemplar of Lawrence’s work, the story ends in revenge, tragedy and irony.

In his poem Snake, published in 1920, Lawrence moves on to discuss social and religious ideas. Delving into matters of social class, Lawrence focuses on the lack of reverence those in the upper echelon of society have for those in the middle and low classes. Those below, though, tend to look upon those above like gods, and Snake is a stark outcry against this perpetuated a system. About the Author
Pietro Fontana opened a microbrewery in Monza, Italy, where he is both owner and brewer: Piccolo Opificio Brassicolo del Carrobiolo-FERMENTUM, a member of the Italian cultural association Unionbirrai. Apart from producing sought-after beers, he organizes introductory courses to home brewing and tastings of quality beers. In 2011 and 2013, some of his beers obtained the highest recognition available to Italian brewers, being included in Slowfood's Guida alle birre d'Italia (a guide to Italian beers). In 2014, he extended his brewery, adding a new production area and a brewpub—the first in the city. Fabio Petroni specializes in portraits and still lifes. He has photographed leading Italian celebrities, and works with top advertising agencies where he handles important Italian brands. His books with White Star include Horses: Master Portraits, Mutt's Life!, Cocktails, Orchids, Tea Sommelier, and Bonsai. He lives in Milan.

The beer part is a little thin but the recipes and photography are outstanding.

Author Pietro Fontana is brew master and owner of Piccolo Opficio Brassicolo del Carrobiolo-FERMENTUM, a microbrewery in Monza, Italy in Lombardy a few miles north of Milan. This is a lavishly illustrated and photographed coffee table book. About a quarter of the book covers the history, raw materials, making and serving of beer. Half the book glosses over the major beer styles broken down by country of origin, and the remainder of the book provides recipes made with or designed to pair with beer. He covers most of the major styles, hitting on the high points, but his discussion is a little disjointed in places. If you are unfamiliar with the major beer styles Fontana writes clearly and is easy to follow. If you are aware of the major styles and want to go further, this is probably not the book for you. The recipes designed by Chef Giovanni Ruggeri are exquisite and Fabio Petroni’s photography is outstanding. It is a very beautiful and sumptuous book.

The Best Canadian Author You've Probably Never Heard Of

I came across McFadden's "A Trip Around Lake Erie" about eight years ago, when a clerk at Schwartz Booksellers in Milwaukee recommended it. In the days before amazon.com, I spent a couple years collecting the trilogy, which took me to bookstores in Minnesota and McFadden's hometown of Hamilton, Ontario, which really is as dirty, dreary and burnt-out as McFadden describes it.
McFadden mixes fiction and non-fiction together as he tells the story of his family's road trip in a Volkswagen camper around Lake Erie. He later wrote about their travel adventures as they toured the Lake Huron area. He had planned to write about trips around each of the Great Lakes, but then his kids grew up and he got a divorce. Ten years after he went around Erie and Huron, he finally tackled Lake Ontario alone, except for a three-man film crew that followed behind him and tried to stay out of his tale.
The reader is never sure whether McFadden is telling the truth or making it up. It doesn't detract from the story. Actually, it's a hoot when you come across the surreal parts of his tales. At one point in "A Trip Around Lake Erie," dead fish somehow migrate from the beach at Point Pelee to every room in the McFadden's Hamilton, Ontario home.
Each short chapter (many lasting less than one page) is a sly little poem. A movie scriptwriter had told McFadden that to make these books more saleable, he should have someone chasing him. McFadden doesn't need such Hollywood conventions. His stories of the road and his many digressions (including bicycling kinesiologists and a brown dachsund named Schenley, because his owners like the whisky)are a fanciful read in themselves.
I hope McFadden eventually makes it around Superior and Lake Michigan. Even if he doesn't, there's enough humor and magic in this fine trilogy to keep you smiling for years.
I also recommend a fourth McFadden road trip, "A Typical Canadian Family Visits Disney World," which is a hilarious long poem that is not included here, along with his other novels, poems and essays.

When I was in high school in Toronto in 1980 David McFadden spoke to our creative writing class. I was a disillusioned kid interested in books and David McFadden became one of my literary hero's. At the time he had only written his books on lakes Erie and Huron and his prose captivated me. He's an honest writer who revels in life's "small" moments. As a result, a family car trip becomes endlessly fascinating and entertaining. His prose is accessible, humorous and not to be missed. Do yourself a favour and spend a few hours with these books!

Cowboys, businessmen, vaudeville actors, military men, and others from diverse ethnic backgrounds make their way to the plaza chili stands for dinner, companionship, and entertainment. Seventeen-year-old Mexican American Lupe Pérez and her family have their own booth with its simmering chili and stewing beans, eaten with warm corn tortillas and washed down with coffee. However, life is not easy for Lupe and her family, and the teen worries about their dwindling clientele. She observes other successful stands, taking the initiative to learn new practices from the Chili Queens who serve food and amuse guests with stories and songs. Next, she convinces her family to allow these practices at their own booth, inspiring Mamá to create new, secret chili recipes and Papá to share tales from his vaquero past that Lupe can retell. This narrative is supported with meticulous research evidenced in primary source photos, recipes, and music scores of the era. Spanish dialogue is used to lend authenticity to the characters and the time period, although English meanings are immediately provided. Social Issues Pervade This Story of Working Class Life in Historic San Antonio

Lupe Pérez is San Antonio's answer to The Girl With a Pearl Earring. We know that she lived, but we can be sure of nothing else about her. What might she think if she could read Chili Queen: Mi historia?

There are several important ideas for readers to mull. Lupe's romance with Peter unravels perhaps more because of his family's objection to a working class Mexican American girl than to their interesting in making a match for him. Matters of race and socio-economic status were as real to late nineteenth-century San Antonio as they are today, although not talked about openly. The Pérez family accepts their lower status in AmericanSociety. They do not contest it. Mamá offers that as a reason for Peter's decision. No one raises objection. Younger brother José is the only one who spakes up about his rights.

In late nineteenth-century San Antonio, women did not enjoy many opportunities for personal advancement.They were second-class citizens and Mexican American working class women had perhaps even fewer rights. Lupe in unique in her striving for entrepreneurial success. Despite a lack of formal education, Lupe is intelligent and she tries many different ways to improve business at her family's chili stand. She takes risks with money she does not have and ultimately makes a bold move to improve her profits.
Lupe Perez, a smart and mature seventeen year old, is willing to lose to gain.

The San Antonio Girl With Pearl Earring looks back at us from the photography taken by Frank Hardesty on Military Plaza in 1886. What was she thinking then? What would she think if by some magic, her rebozo could transport her to twenty-first century San Antonio, where she might understand the importance of her legacy for enterprising business women in the city? What would she say about the story spun around her? I think she would be pleased.

And lastly, this story is steeped in San Antonio history during the 1880s. It attempts to set the record straight. Chili Queens were not prostitutes.

Chili Queen: A must read novel

This is a first person story of Lupe who becomes a Chili Queen during the 1880's in San Antonio and her family's struggles to survive.The book combines vintage photos, maps, recipes and music of the era with fiction to weave a thought provoking novel of a family and its chili stand. The development of strong characters allows the reader to fall back in time to when the chili stands existed and understand what it was like to be part of the family pursuing their dream.
