the "Everyman's" series is the best stocking stuffers ever created. I am a bit of a Baudelaire buff, and I must say, this small version is perhaps my favorite. There is not much else to say. I have spent the time sorting through the poorly translated, badly misquoted versions of Flowers of Evil. Learn from my mistake. Pass by the frilly, big, seventeen color dustjacket editions and buy this little guy. It will not dissapoint you. Good day.

Best Book By The Creator of Modern Poetry!

Baudelaire is credited, along with Whitman and Dickinson, with being the inventor of modern poetry. I wish someone would actually explain why modern poetry begins with him. (email anyone?)
But this book really is great. Get the Everyman's Pocket Poet's version. It's got all (or almost all, I haven't counted) of Baudelaire's masterpiece "Les Fleur Du Mal," in a good translation by Richard Howard (though also check out Norman Shapiro's). And it has selections from Michael Hamburger's wonderful translation of Baudelaire's prose poems, "Le Spleen Du Paris." The best of these is "GET DRUNK," or "Enivrez-vous!" It begins:
One should always be drunk. That's all that matters; that's our one imperative need. So as not to feel Time's horrible burden that breaks your shoulders and bows you down, you must get drunk without ceasing. ....
Baudelaire was full of dark energy like that. It disgusts and attracts. When it gets tiresome--and, like too much honey and too much Delacroix, reading about maggots eating lovers' flesh, will get tiresome--just put it down. When you pick it up you'll get some fresh insights. How fresh? As fresh as the in simile B. uses in "the Vampire": "bind[ing] me . . . as gambler to his winning streak." Nicely done. Plus the book is small so you can sneak it into work and easily goof off.

This beautiful collection of Baudelaire includes Les Fleurs du mal as well as several prose poems. Richard Howard has produced an extraordinary translation of this singularly great poet. Baudelaire's place as a symbolist and one of the founding figures of modern poetry are beyond doubt. His woven attunement to the modern condition, with haunting observations of crowd psychology, drugs, prostitution, and disease are incomparable representations of urban life. Les Fleurs du mal rightly became a paradigmatic text which would provide the vision of a future poetic landscape for Rimbaud, Mallarme, and Valery. This collection is artfully arranged and impressively translated.

About the Author
Lena Mukhina was a sixteen-year-old schoolgirl when the German army invaded the USSR in 1941 and besieged her home city of Leningrad. She survived the siege and returned to Leningrad after the war. She died in 1991.

Like Anne Frank, Lena Mukhina has written herself into immortality

On the front of this book, four women are seen pulling a sledge, laden with what appears to be two cadavers. The ground is frozen, possibly re-frozen after a partial thaw, suggesting the photograph was taken in late March 1942, around the 200th day of the Nazi blockade of Leningrad. Just less than 100,000 people died in Leningrad that month, most from starvation. In each of the two previous months the number exceeded 100,000.

By chance, 15-year-old Lena Mukhina began her almost daily report on her life in Leningrad on 22nd May 1941. She was a very normal teenager. Her primary concerns were the end-of-year examinations at school and social relationships with her fellow pupils. She had a number of girlfriends, was on good terms with several boys, and considered herself in love with a boy named Vova. Vova was always polite, but unfortunately showed no real interest in Lena. Lena, of course, hoped to change that.

She writes interestingly, and is particularly good at dialogue. Some of the early pages of her diary could be transferred directly to a film or TV script.

Then, on 22nd June, Hitler launched Operation Barbarossa. Lena's diary entries include news of the invasion as it was conveyed to the Soviet population through Sovinformburo, and as it impacted herself, her circle of school friends and their city.

She was co-opted to help with trench-digging within the city limits and then, in mid-July, she and `Mama Lena' (Lena's late mother's sister) were conscripted for three days of trench digging 21 miles south of Leningrad. The logistics of 12 hours of overnight digging, with a ten minute break every hour, are carefully described. 'We learned that there wasn't any food but there would be soon.'

Air raids began in early July; food rationing quickly followed. On 8th September Lena wrote, 'there were nine air raids ... If we have nine air raids a day for ten days in a row, then I believe there will be considerably more lunatics than sane people left in the city.'

Gradually, shortage of food became a far greater concern than either air raids or artillery fire. In November, the bread ration for white collar workers, adult dependents and children under 12 was reduced to 125 grams a day (4.4 ounces).

For the most part, Lena remains remarkably optimistic and cheerful. For as long as they had the energy, Lena and Mama Lena chased around and queued as necessary to buy the little amounts of food to which they were entitled. They each brought home small quantities of food they were given at lunchtime at work and school and made soup of it with plenty of hot water. After eating two bowls of this soup, Lena would go to bed 'feeling full'.

The bread ration was eased a little on December 25th, and there was a further increase in late January. But it was still too little and the January increase came too late to save Mama Lena. After some days of becoming increasingly lethargic and incapable, she died on February 7th, leaving Lena alone in the besieged city. Lena sent a telegram to her nearest relatives, 700 miles away, asking for 'advice', but, most unfortunately, sent it to an old address. It was late April before she finally received the response 'come'.

But how to get out of Leningrad? And how to survive until that became possible? Lena details almost daily her further adventures and the many frustrations of securing a place on an evacuation train. Even when that is arranged, there are further delays.

By late May, Lena is recording definite signs that she is herself succumbing to starvation. Then the diary abruptly ends, exactly 368 days after it began.

If we had no other information, we would fear that Lena had become moribund and, after a few more days, died. But the editors of this excellent volume have managed to establish that Lena did finally leave Leningrad in early June and that she ultimately lived to be 66, in her later years working in Moscow as a commercial artist.

For some readers of this book, the day-by-day account of the very small amounts of food acquired and consumed may become tedious. Others, especially of Lena's own age, will deeply empathize with her, and strongly will her to remain optimistic and active - and survive. For anyone with an interest in Soviet Russia and the Leningrad Siege, there is a huge amount to be learnt from Lena's diary, and it will implant an indelible impression of that awful Leningrad winter. This text is an important find. Without having any idea that she was doing so, Lena Mukhina has written herself into immortality.

thought I'd break a rib laughing. The sequel is even funnier. Think "Modern Family" around
the globe with the possibility of romance in the air and a character who says everything
you're thinking. Valetina never holds back. Enjoy!

I loved this book for so many reasons. Yes, it's a romp around the world. But it's also about what happens when you suffer an unexpected loss and go in search for answers. As a benefit, Valentina is a quirky character who makes you laugh (sometimes out loud). Great beach read!

Colin Duriez is an expert on C.S. Lewis, his writings, and his wider circle. He is also the author of the popular biography C.S. Lewis: A Biography of Friendship and J.R.R. Tolkien: The Making of a Legend. He has also written widely on other aspects of Lewis, Tolkien, and the other members of the Inklings.

I highly recommend for both fans and scholars.

Readers of The Oxford Inklings, Lewis, Tolkien and their Circle, are fortunate to have an author of the caliber of Colin Duriez to take them deeper into the extraordinary lives of writers known as The Inklings. Duriez writes on details of their discussions and the backgrounds of each "member." (Note that this fascinating group really didn't require membership, but, because of their integrity as writers, they maintained an appropriate mix of loyalty to one another, and the sort of intimacy in sharing their work that led to literary success and deep pleasure among one another as friends.) Because of Duriez's excellent research and rich writing, I closed the book feeling that I, too, had experienced the fun and fellowship of their times together. I also learned details I'd never known before, such as how the Socratic Club operated and how C.S. Lewis's debate with Elizabeth Anscombe affected him in ways I'd never realized. I found Duriez's analysis of this and many other issues to be informative and satisfying, because his writing style is so accessible. This is a wonderful read for both fans and scholars alike. I highly recommend The Oxford Inklings.

Tolkien, Lewis, And Their Mileu

In November, 1929 two young Oxford dons spent a rainy evening together talking of their shared love for the mythologies of Northern Europe. It was one of innumerable conversations that must have taken place in and around the University that evening, but it was easily the most significant, because the two dons were J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis. Shortly thereafter Tolkien and Lewis began meeting regularly and were joined by friends with similar scholarly interests. This was the beginning of the Inklings, the well known circle of professors and writers who were to have a major influence on literature in the twentieth century. Colin Duriez examines not only Tolkien and Lewis's contributions, but also those of other Inklings. The result is a scholarly and highly interesting study.

At its most basic level the Inklings was devoted to conversation. Meeting in C.S. Lewis' rooms at Magdalen College or in the Eagle and Child pub, the Inklings came together two times a week for years for wide ranging, free-wheeling discussions on every imaginable topic. Inevitably, given that so many of the members were writers, bits and pieces of whatever they were working on were brought in to be read aloud and discussed. Criticism was freely given and sharp debates often ensued. The Inklings' influence extended beyond literary analysis, however. C.S. Lewis and his brother were both eventually convinced to return to Christianity after spending years as atheists thanks to the influence of Tolkien and other Inklings. The teaching of English at Oxford and the composition of the University syllabus were altered and improved thanks in part to discussions between Inklings members. And in the end the love many Inklings felt for early English and Anglo-Saxon poetry helped revive interest in Beowulf and other works.

The best known of the Inklings were Tolkien and Lewis, along with Charles Williams and Owen Barfield. Duriez provides brief biographies of these men as well as many of the lesser known but still important members like Lord David Cecil, Hugo Dyson, and Nevill Coghill. He also does an excellent job of discussing the group's influence on English literary culture, making it clear that, though the last "official" Inklings meeting was over 60 years ago, its impact is on-going.

Inklings- scholars, poets, theologians, friends, critics, thinkers.

"The Oxford Inklings" by Colin Duriez is a manageable collection of mini-autobiographies of the renowned men who made up the Inklings.
These men were C. S. Lewis, JRR Tolkien, Charles Williams, and others of academic and literary fame.
Collectively, these men soldiered, authored many books from theology to poetry, and instructed at some prestigious British and American Universities.

They were friends first, and critics of each other's work when relevant, and they all were believers of Christ or came to be.
Ravi Zacharias' question "Can man live without God?" could have been answered by any of these fellows.

If you're a fan of C. S. Lewis, I can recommend this book. Eric Metaxas, a modern philosopher and theologian, holds educational forums under the name "Socrates in the City" where brilliant minds gather to inform regarding various topics. These gatherings are a chance to question and dialogue.
I can't help but think that's a lot like the Inklings, who gathered to eat, drink, and think.
