A Quite Amazing War Journal

This Journal is quite exceptional and a major discovery. Helena Hall, sixty six when the war broke out in 1939, was a local historian in a Sussex village. She became the ARP warden for her village but at the same time managed to keep the most vivid account , written every day of the war, of how the war affected her and the life of the village. At the same time however her journal is not just local but contains detailed accounts of the major events such as the Battle of Britain, Pearl Harbour and the fall of Singapore, Stalingrad and the war in Russia all culminating in the fall of Berlin and VE Day.
The reader is left weak at the knees at the energy, perspectives and insight of this exceptional lady. She has provided for us readers, not only a blow by blow account of the war but also one seen from an angle described by a UK historian as quite unique. If you read just one book this year make it this one. 5 stars

Campfire cooking at its finest

If you are an outdoor enthusiast like me then this is a must-have cookbook that will become a trusted companion for any adventure great outdoors this cookbook literally has every recipe. You could ever want to try and cook over an open flame. Everything from buckwheat pancakes (which I have tried, and they are delicious) to pork and beans and more exotic fare such as campfire coffee cake and campfire fried rice. Of course, it also has the old standbys such as hobo pie, also known as Boy Scout pies or foil dinners because the ingredients are placed into a tinfoil pouch and then placed on the coals of the fire to cook in their own juices for 20 to 30 minutes all the recipes in this cookbook seemed to be thoroughly researched and well planned out the directions are extremely straightforward and easy to follow to avoid confusion and a spoiled dinner. If you recipes I cook from this book so far have been very tasty. As previously stated with the buckwheat pancakes and I am looking forward to cooking more. And once I've established a favorite recipe list. I will write them down on waterproof paper and store them with my camping kitchen supplies so if you want to take the menu for your next camping trip up a few notches then I suggest you try this book you won't be disappointed with the results. And neither will your taste buds.

I love this book! There are some awesome recipes included, the one I tried was the Buckwheat Pecan Pancakes over the fire. that was so awesome and it had a very unique grilled test which was delicious. I cant wait to try the others.

I now have the confidence to prepare my favorite indian dishes in the privacy of my home

I was born on the island Trinidad and Tobago, the most southerly of the Caribbean Islands and I am familiar with alot of Indian dishes but I have not ventured to make some of the real traditional ones on my own. Now that I do not live in my home country, I get cravings for the Indian foods that I am accustomed to. Now with the recipes in this book, I feel more confident that I can prepare these dish in the privacy of my own own. The author did a great job of listing the recipes that are easy to prepare.

Great informative book.

I always enjoyed Indian Cuisine because of the flavors used and the spices to make the dish tasty. This book provided different authentic Indian recipes which are very interesting to make and serve for guests. With instructions, serving size, preparation time, and ingredients provided in every recipe found, this book is a good source of Indian recipes. The recipes found in the book has serving sizes of 4 – 12 persons which can be a great option for serving when there are guests coming. My favorite recipe would be Indian Shrimp Pizza with Mozzarella because it is easy to prepare and yet it is not a common dish because it has Indian flavors in it. This book truly did not disappoint.

Indian food is so delicious and so good for you. Did you know that curry helps kill cancer cells. Well I do now. I did not find it out here but in another book I was reading. And the flavor is so grand you will just fall in love love. Thank you.

Eric Walrond (1898–1966) was a writer, journalist, caustic critic, and fixture of 1920s Harlem. His short story collection, Tropic Death, was one of the first efforts by a black author to depict Caribbean lives and voices in American fiction. Restoring Walrond to his proper place as a luminary of the Harlem Renaissance, this biography situates Tropic Death within the author's broader corpus and positions the work as a catalyst and driving force behind the New Negro literary movement in America.

James Davis follows Walrond from the West Indies to Panama, New York, France, and finally England. He recounts his relationships with New Negro authors such as Countée Cullen, Charles S. Johnson, Zora Neale Hurston, Alain Locke, and Gwendolyn Bennett, as well as the white novelist Carl Van Vechten. He also recovers Walrond's involvement with Marcus Garvey's journal Negro World and the National Urban League journal Opportunity and examines the writer's work for mainstream venues, including Vanity Fair.

In 1929, Walrond severed ties with Harlem, but he did not disappear. He contributed to the burgeoning anticolonial movement and print culture centered in England and fueled by C. L. R. James, George Padmore, and other Caribbean expatriates. His history of Panama, shelved by his publisher during the Great Depression, was the first to be written by a West Indian author. Unearthing documents in England, Panama, and the United States, and incorporating interviews, criticism of Walrond's fiction and journalism, and a sophisticated account of transnational black cultural formations, Davis builds an eloquent and absorbing narrative of an overlooked figure and his creation of modern American and world literature.

compelling portrait of important unrecognised man

This is more than simply the biography of one troubled man - it's about a history of Caribbean politics/statehood and its relationship first of all to the USA but also to rest of the world - it fits the individual man into his surroundings and the effects on him. Social status and the pressures of racism, internationally, answer some of the anomalies of the personality and this just makes so much sense that it embellishes the biography to make it more than a chronological story of one man who rather disappeared after his flowering. His life seems to have fallen apart but when examined closely it's that departure he made from his original trajectory in order to take on injustices that was the swerve - it cost him deep peace of mind and probably his family, but he regained part of his own past and settled (perhaps) with it - the history of Panama which absorbed him we are told for years, is enriched by his participation and his accurate portrayal in his early classic volume. Columbia is publishing important works of Afro-American scholarship which reveals new precepts of discussing American history as a country aimed at colonisation in what was a psychically destructive project, and the tools developed in Afro-American scholarship are enabling us to make that transparent with a view to dissolving them. This volume is a superb example, and hopefully it will be widely read.

A fantastic book

Kitty Ryan has to raise her three boys on her own and she also has a hotel to run. She doesn't have the time to meet anyone and is surprised when she feels something as soon as she meets John Mcleod, a Scottish man who leads a free life. He soon becomes a member of the family, which isn't easy, because her oldest sons aren't ready to accept it. It also doesn't help that John is strong, big and protective. Even though her boys try to resist him John thinks he acts in their best interest. He helps Kitty around the house and she's happy she doesn't have to do everything on her own any longer.

When something unexpected happens John becomes even more strict and rigid and the household is in a state of constant conflict. There will be a war and Kitty's sons can't stay home. Kitty can't bear to see them go without having made peace with them and she tries everything she can to make things right again. Will she be able to succeed?

A Mother's Duty is a beautiful story about a strong woman who works very hard to feed her sons. She wants the hotel to be their legacy, a place where they can all work together as a family. Things aren't going according to plan though and Kitty keeps having to adjust her expectations. It isn't easy for her to live in a house filled with so many egos, but she's doing very well. I loved her character and spirit.

A Mother's Duty has over 500 pages and I found myself wishing it would be even longer. I liked it so much I didn't want the story to end at all. I enjoyed every single page and it was fabulous to read about Kitty and her men. It was also great to read about life in the years before WWII. If you like books set in this period, I highly recommend A Mother's Duty. I loved this book and am very happy I had the chance to read it.

Another fab read from June Francis

June Francis is a brilliant author in writing stories like this. These are the kind of books that will never leave me, I started reading books like this when I was 16, a long time ago now!! And although my taste in books has widened out, I will never forget where my love of reading came from. Such ones as Catherine Cookson, in the same sort of style.

Here we have a Mother, widowed, raising her boys. Kitty Ryan has a lot of hard work to get through, not only raising, teaching and molding her children, she runs an Hotel almost single handed.

She has not time for romance. But you know, when you least expect it, someone walks into your life and just sweeps you off your feet. This is what happened to Kitty.

Not all goes smooth though.

Kitty is in love with John, Kitty loves her boys, John respects her boys.

BUT her boys, doesn't want John anywhere near their Mother.

That's when things start to unfold.

I would imagine its very hard for children to accept another man in Mothers life. As equally its hard for the man. Being piggy in the middle as Kitty is, what is going to happen? Her boys, or her second chance of happiness or is there a middle ground.

I loved reading this, I read it in one sitting as it was an easy read.

Andrew Hindle was born in Western Australia before its independence and secession (which actually still hasn't happened yet, but any day now...), where he lived a happy and fulfilling life full of robots and aliens and starships and in later years also some alcohol. In 2000 he moved to Finland to be with his Internet Girlfriend, because it seemed like the "future-y" thing to do. They got married, he got a job, then he got a better job, then they had a kid, then he got cancer, then they had another kid ... your basic human story, really. But he likes it. He hopes you like this one he wrote, too.

A wonderful read, again

This book is wonderful, a well-written, fully-satisfying expansion on the series, giving readers many of the answers they were probably seeking from "Eejit", while creating many more questions that I can almost promise you will be answered in later books. Trust me! Drednanth (as are the other books by Mr. Hindle) is funny, intriguing, surprising, frustrating, page-turning...I could do better if I were an author myself but I ran out of steam there.

As I have said in other reviews, but it is worth repeating: I read a variety of authors, old and new (Asimov, Erikson, Clarke, Heinlein, Sanderson, Martin, Jordan, Harkaway, Reynolds, Banks, Stephenson, Donaldson, etc.), and am extremely particular about who and what I read. I do not like to waste time on bad or even average writing. I *will* not waste time on it. I don't have the time to waste on authors who have little to say. I have stopped books in the middle. I have skipped hundreds of pages to see if an interesting concept has finally been brought to fruition at the end of a book that just seems to never get to the point.

Read this book, read this series, read this author. I would be shocked if any reader found it not worth their time.

Lots of Fun. If you Read it.

The writing and the delightful and horrible (they alternate) characters carry a somewhat pessimistic story. The alien species are fascinating. At least one character reflects on why there is no sign of the old in out. So at least the author knows that the subject exists. Perhaps he has reached the age when one notices girls. The plot, if I were to call it that, is farcical.

The author has the embarrassing habit of _responding_ to reviews. But at least it gave me time to tell him that a weasel is not a rodent. Of course, a creature from a swamp on a planet circling an alien star isn't _anything_ that we would call by an Earthly name but who is counting. This is the second book of three. I counted.

scifi at its most sublime, this series combines the best elements of iain banks and red dwarf in a group orgy of unbelievable delight. there's something very 'golden age' about this series. familiar, and alien at the same time. i can see this being one of those "reality" style tv shows like 'the office'. with peter capaldi in it.

10/10 would faceplant on it again.

"The Killdeer" by Michael Cotter is one of those wonderful books that is going to bring pleasure to a great many different sorts of people.  Cotter is a professional storyteller so his vignettes, told in a way that seems perfectly natural, are, of course, very carefully and artfully composed.  Storytellers have spent years reacting to their audiences, picking up all the little nuances of their listeners, and seamlessly blending this live response into the fabric of the tale.  That quality of resonance rings in these written stories. 
 
Cotter is a Minnesota farmer and his stories are mainly about the struggle and satisfaction of working that land over three generations   There are lots of horse stories; one tends to forget how much a part of a Midwestern farmer's life involved horses.  One such is an amusing tale of gypsies and horse-trading, and immediately there sprang to my mind a story my grandmother told about hiding under the bed with her little sister when all the grownups were gone and they spotted gypsies coming up the road along side their farm.  "Those gypsies stole our watermelons," grandma said, "every last one of them!"  But I had forgotten all about that story— or about gypsies, for that matter—until I read "The Killdeer."  That is the great art of the storyteller: he brings your own long forgotten stories to mind.
 
By coincidence, Alison Gopnik had a column in the Wall Street Journal recently about a University of Utah anthropologist who had lived with a tribe of hunter/gatherers in Botswana.  The anthropologist analyzed the conversations of these people and found that in the daytime it was pretty much business-as-usual, but at night, when they gathered around the fire, people told stories 81% of the time:—"stories about people they knew, about past generations, about relatives in distant villages, about goings-on in the spirit world…they talked about people and places that were far away in space and time and possibility, they transmitted cultural wisdom and historical knowledge to the next generation, and they explored the mysterious psychological nuances of other minds."  Fire gave humans the evening, not to work, but to talk.

I was born on a farm in the Depression and graduated from a Catholic School. A strong work ethic and responsibility were always a part of my life.The dinner table of my youth often contained a mixture of hoboes who worked on the farm and became part of our family, the neighbors on the threshing crew, teachers, missionaries, doctors, Catholic nuns and priests in my mother’s family - all stopping on the farm for dinner and trying to connect with their stories.Forty years later, when I became a storyteller, I found myself revisiting these early experiences of people who didn’t match at all, finding common ground in their life stories. Because this was the only type of storytelling that I knew, I began telling stories from my life. I learned that as I told these memories, I would look at them in a new way. In the feedback from the audience and the other tellers, I began to see the healing power of sharing those personal stories. This came into focus in 1990 when I was invited to conduct a workshop with terminally ill people where I learned that we can be healed without being cured. This brought me to the place where I am now, where I believe that the personal story has a great self-healing potential. And, of course, as we heal ourselves, the people around us are also changed

A book for your guestroom bedside table

"The Killdeer" by Michael Cotter is one of those wonderful books that is going to bring pleasure to a great many different sorts of people. Cotter is a professional storyteller so his vignettes, told in a way that seems perfectly natural, are, of course, very carefully and artfully composed. Storytellers have spent years reacting to their audiences, picking up all the little nuances of their listeners, and seamlessly blending this live response into the fabric of the tale. That quality of resonance rings in these written stories.

Cotter is a Minnesota farmer and his stories are mainly about the struggle and satisfaction of working that land over three generations There are lots of horse stories; one tends to forget how much a part of a Midwestern farmer's life involved horses. One such is an amusing tale of gypsies and horse-trading, and immediately there sprang to my mind a story my grandmother told about hiding under the bed with her little sister when all the grownups were gone and they spotted gypsies coming up the road along side their farm. "Those gypsies stole our watermelons," grandma said, "every last one of them!" But I had forgotten all about that story— or about gypsies, for that matter—until I read "The Killdeer." That is the great art of the storyteller: he brings your own long forgotten stories to mind.

By coincidence, Alison Gopnik had a column in the Wall Street Journal recently about a University of Utah anthropologist who had lived with a tribe of hunter/gatherers in Botswana. The anthropologist analyzed the conversations of these people and found that in the daytime it was pretty much business-as-usual, but at night, when they gathered around the fire, people told stories 81% of the time:—"stories about people they knew, about past generations, about relatives in distant villages, about goings-on in the spirit world…they talked about people and places that were far away in space and time and possibility, they transmitted cultural wisdom and historical knowledge to the next generation, and they explored the mysterious psychological nuances of other minds." Fire gave humans the evening, not to work, but to talk.

Wonderful Story Teller

An awesome story-teller; I've seen him in-person twice. His wife has a way of writing the stories out so it still sounds like him telling it!
