I didn't think he would like it because it was not what I expected

This book was a gift for my husband. When it arrived, I didn't think he would like it because it was not what I expected. But he started reading it immediately and has had his nose in it ever since whenever he has some spare time. He loves it, but I'll be glad when he finishes it so we can talk again.

About the Author
Ben Byrne was born in London in 1977. He studied Drama at the University of Manchester and then lived in San Francisco for several years working as an international market researcher and ethnographic film maker. This job took him to Japan, where he spent considerable time exploring its history and culture. He returned to London to dedicate his time more fully to writing, and his short fiction has appeared in Litro magazine. Fireflies is his first novel.

Wonderful read ! Didn't want this beautiful story to end. The characters linger in my mind, like long lost friends I will always treasure, the visuals are beautifully drawn, romantic, thoughtful, and filled with insight to the human mind and heart. The authors imagination is rich, full, and delicious. The first novel by Ben Byrne is not to be missed. Can't wait for the next !!!

About the Author
Mr. Sultan's first novel, The Immoderate Temper of Mrs. Chen's Daughter, reflects the author's deep love of Chinese history and culture as well as his Jewish heritage. He has traveled widely in China and speaks Chinese, although no one will mistake him for being fluent. Prior to his career as a writer, Mr. Sultan enjoyed a long career as an engineer, the final six years of which he worked for a Chinese company. The idea for The Immoderate Temper of Mrs. Chen's Daughter came from the observation of a young girl in a poultry market in the city of Kunming, China. The girl was, perhaps, eight years old and she was responsible for the slaughter, plucking, and dressing of the live ducks and chickens purchased by customers. The author was fascinated by the sight of this little girl and the carnage she created. The author wondered what such a girl would be like as she grew to adulthood.

Slaughtering Girl Shocks, Surprises and Draws the Reader Directly into China

is a monumentally paced historical novel with idiosyncratic characters, full dimensional sequences and sexual encounters that surprise and confound. Mrs. Chen, a widow, provides a valuable service to her village by slaughtering fowl for the citizens. She also sells eggs, along with the chickens, ducks and geese at the poultry shop that brings in a bountiful return. Her daughter bears a child from a singular encounter with a traveling warlord and dies shortly thereafter. But Mrs. Chen's granddaughter survives and thrives, as she works alongside her grandmother. Because of the granddaughter's overwhelming height and strength, by age eight, she kills with an almost supernatural capacity and eventually becomes known far and wide as "Slaughtering Girl."

What becomes of the strapping young girl is the gist of the book that spans a hundred-year period in war-torn China. It takes the reader through the many uprisings between dynasties, families and the multicultural expansion in Shanghai. It's the tale of the Chinese, the Jews and ever changing politics.

From this book alone, I learned an incredible amount of Chinese history in a most enjoyable way. There were many evenings when I could not put it down to sleep. But even sleep deprived, I'm happy to have read the book.

Getting to know Chinese history through a book

I found Robert Sultan’s book hard to put down, once I went through the first chapters of its development. I had to slowly acclimate myself with details of living in a pre-communist Chinese town. His narrative skill are wonderful because he tells the story with a relatively low amount of dialogue, yet without loss of intimacy or directness. I have not red other books about recent Chinese history or culture so I now feel that I know a lot more than I used to.

I believe the book has excelled in blending a political history of China in the last 80 years with the lives of two atypical women and how they lived their lives in many domains, business, family, sexual, military and political. It is amazing that the book includes scenes from the life of Mao, military strategies, geographic terrain along with the main characters

A fair amount of disclosing details of Shanghai Jews puts a nice frame around the story. The staggered chapters with time and place flashbacks interwoven with recent history kept me engaged — it was relatively easy to fill in things which were not explicitly described. I was wondering how that would translate in the medium of film, but that is something that a screen writer would have to resolve.

I found the eroticism and sensuality of the book very powerful. It deals with sexual themes (lesbian love) in eras that would have been (I imagine) serious taboos.
Quite often, I was surprised when metaphors of sexual organs into parts of plants were used to describe sexual acts in a very original way. Equally unexpected was the interjection of four letter curse words and phrases in “straight, proper” dialogue segments.

I loved the way Sultan describes how human economic behavior explains so powerfully the distribution of economic power in group settings. You do not need to know Marx to understand how Slaughtering Girl’s business savvy translates in the accumulation of wealth and how even the most rigid system’s (Mao’s communist party, red guards, etc.) oversimplified slogans can (and will) be manipulated for acquiring power and money. We all know now that corruption is not a capitalist trick but equally (if not more) a communist one, if that is the adjective to describe today’s China.

If you want to learn more about recent Chinese history, without reading a college text book or a dry academic narration, get to know Mrs. Chen, Slaughtering Girl, her sister and their daughter. They will offer you a much more enjoyable experience!

I liked that it dealt with recent history

This was a fascinating book set in cultures that are different from mine. The story line was complex but believable. I liked that it dealt with recent history. What the characters went through and how they were affected by events beyond their control helped me to understand more about these years than any history class I attended. The Geographic Notes and Glossary at the end of the book show the research the author did, in addition to his travels in these areas. I wish I had known these were included in the book while I was reading the story. Although the struggles (relationships, sexual encounters and military descriptions) would have kept my interest to the last bit of violence.

This play was originally developed through discussions and improvisations with teens, and its messages are positive and presented with humor. The story follows two teenagers on a quest for heroes as they navigate their way through street gangs, religious sects, unethical pop stars, TV characters, and vagrants. The cast is very large (doubling OK), with an even balance of male/female roles; the staging is best when performed in the intimacy of theatre-in-the-round. The teens finally find their hero in Mrs. Jones, whom they can't persuade to go back with them. In their quest, however, they have gained important insights about the hero in each of them.

Not exactly low-carb

This book looked promising, but unfortunately it included a lot of high carbohydrate ingredients. Honey and brown sugar? Really? Also, the author did not include fiber counts which many people used to determine net carbs. Carbohydrates minus fiber equals net carbs , which is an important thing for many people on low carbohydrate diets .

Watching your carbs can be so exasperating so when I found this book, I bought it fast. I'm so glad I bought it because this author has done her research. Carb swapping is swapping the refined carbs, which are bad for you, with healthier ingredients. I like the fact that both the nutritional values (calories, fat, carbs, protein, sodium and sugar) and the health benefits are shown on each of these amazing recipes.

Comparing the nutritional values of the regular dishes with the nutritional values of the carb-swapped dishes helps the readers see how much more nutritious the carb-swapped dishes are. For breakfast every morning I used to eat oatmeal with either raisins, blueberries or cranberries in it. Not any more! Now I eat the carb-swapped oatmeal and I love it. My family and I also love the carb-swapped chicken Enchiladas. The little "boats" are so cute and so much healthier. Get the book and try some of these wonderful recipes. This is a great, well-written book that everyone should cook from at least 3 days out of the 7.

Love the variety of cakes and ease of prep

Not everyone likes the "dump" concept but if you do you'll appreciate this book. It's always hard to get through a book like this without stopping to bake a cake! I especially liked the peach cobbler dump recipe for the crockpot -- can't get any easier. Looking forward to more "dump" books.

Some really golden recipes await!

First, let me start off with saying I am not Vegan. I collect cookbooks and vegan recipes have a place on my shelf (digital and physical) because I'm always looking for a new way to present veggies. I just choose not to make them the only thing I eat. I've become a fan of Samantha Michaels cookbooks because they have always managed to be a step above the standard grocery store recipe scam. You know... "buy only X brand mayo and mix with X brand tuna..." You won't see that here. But you also will not be forced to flambe or fricassee anything. These recipes are a return to the straight forward style I prefer in a cookbook.

Now, for some constructive feedback: The layout is suffering from a completely disjointed look in the digital format that makes it harder to read than it should. Something that should take less than half a page is cut off in margins and forced to a new line. Meanwhile, images are taking up the other column of the page, but aren't taking the full area. More than half the images are blurry. Some of the images are less than inspiring to the point of being gross while others look professionally done. This tells me either the photographer is a student, the author or someone just pulled flash images off the net and stuck them in there (I hope not!) I'm also going to ding you for another recipe of fried potatoes. Keeping it simple is one thing, but milking potatoes for that one last recipe to make 70 is cheap. I would hope the reason people are buying this book is to expand beyond the horizon of the humble fried potato.

On the additionally positive side: less mention of banana and desserts make a come back in this book that is worth giving a try. Overall, this is another solid entry in her cookbook collection.

Not the Best

This isn't a bad book, although it is unlikely I will make any of these recipes or keep the book. A lot of the recipes included curry and chilli which I am not keen on, and some ingredients I cannot find and there were some non-vegan ingredients.
Having said that though these recipes will appeal to many people and can be adapted.

Always good for have vegan dinner options

I like to cook Asian vegan food but it's always good to mix it up. There is a lot of Mexican and Italian recipes. The desserts section had some tempting recipes such as the Gingerbread and the Pumpkin Cheesecake. Also with the other books, there is the same problem with the chapters not showing up in the contents. Overall the book has a lot of good recipes and I will try them. I was given this book free of charge for my honest and unbiased review.

About the Author
Alice Eckles is the author of a Phrase Book for Spiritual Emergencies, and publishes artisanal batches of poetry and prose that she sells from her honey booth at farmers markets and other events since she is also a beekeeper, shiitake grower and homesteader. Her writing has appeared in a number of publications including The Seattle Review and Nomads Choir. After studying sculpture and printmaking at Bennington College, she went on to earn her Master’s of Education from Antioch new England Graduate School, with Waldorf Certification. She worked as a professional artist and art teacher in Vermont for many years before devoting herself to writing. Eckles has participated in a Vermont Studio Center Residency and the Bread Loaf Writer’s Conference. She lives with her life’s companion Ross Conrad in a yurt without electricity or running water, where they plan to build a cordwood house.

Charming and Unique

A charming and unique book that is as much about writing as living (or perhaps about how through writing we shape our lives) in a post-petroleum world that is neither utopian nor dystopian. Alice Eckles "wrangles" an entertaining tale of Deb and Charles and their pursuit of Jeezum, a wild boar, and how this event brings their community together.

A Charming Tale of Magical Realism

Magical Realism best describes the genre of this creative and dreamlike story. When I began reading, I wasn't sure what to make of this unusual story or if it would hold my interest. But after a while I found myself feeling more and more curious to see what would happen to the heroine, Deb, and her human and animal cohorts. This is a gentle hopeful story, rather than a dark macabre vision of the future. The story has a dreamy tone and many artful turns of phrase. This is not an action story, but more of a wistful examination of the heroine's relationship to herself, her community, and nature. Many philosophical questions are raised and some very creative ideas are put forth. I loved the sudden dreamlike shifts in the world's geography and in time itself. This is a lovely story for readers who enjoy thoughtful, dreamlike writing.

I Can't Wait To Try Them All!

I've always loved curry (I could eat it every day) but, until now, I've only ever tasted Indian and Thai curries. This book truly does contain curry recipes from around the world... from Burmese curry to Jamaican curry to Singapore curry (and, of course, Thai and Indian curries). The book is broken down into four mouth-watering sections based on types of meat used: beef, chicken, lamb and shrimp. There are curries with fruit, curries with vegetables, and even one curry with linguini! My biggest challenge was which one to try first.

Literally Just recipes

This book is literally just recipes, there's no breakdown of components or information about the origins it's just right to the cooking. I like that this book breaks down the recipes based on the protein, I have other curry books that do not do this and it can make it hard to find a recipe. The other thing I really like is that despite the fact that most curries look the same they included a picture of the dish with each recipe. The recipes are straight forward, easy to follow and delicious.

There are several things to like about this book -- it's easy to follow ... It doesn't spend time telling you about the origin of anything ... There are not only Indian curry recipes but recipes from other parts of the world (did you know that curry isn't just Indian?) ... There are recipes for chicken, beef and lamb, plus more. If you want an easy to follow book that gets you from the kitchen to the table faster, buy this book!
