Don't waste your money. Book wasn't proofread.

Excited to find a delicious soup to make in my new Vitamix, I eagerly scanned the table of contents. Ah! Tomato & Swiss Soup, page 54! I flipped to that page and found a recipe not only incorrectly titled (it should be Tomato & Swiss Chard Soup- also tasty sounding but certainly different than Tonato & Swiss) there were NO TOMATOES listed in the recipe.

A proofreader would have gone a long way here.

Now I have little interest in the other recipes and will likely pitch this waste of money in the Good Will bin.

A waste of money if you are looking for soups to make in the Vitamix. This is simply a book of 31 recipes that are prepared by cooking ingredients in other pans/pots/baking and then using the Vitamix as a pureeing device (for hot soups) or just as a pureeing device for cold soups. Just my opinion..

The poetry of a century ago

I'm not one to generally sit down and read a book of poetry, but that's exactly what I did when I picked up this anthology of poems. This particular book called out to me, perhaps because I enjoy reading things of the WWI time period. The poems collected in this book all reference to World War I, penned during the years of 1914-1917.

I have new favorite poems, whereas I never had any favorite poems before. I've become quite acquainted with writers I had not known before, in addition to seeing familiar names such as Robert Frost, Arthur Conan Doyle, and Rudyard Kipling.

it's hard not to like this compilation

I bought this for a 20th Century Literature class and while I'm no fan of poetry, it's hard not to like this compilation. Some of the poetry is eye opening with vivid imagery, while others make you feel extremely patriotic. Great ode to WWI.

A delicious smoothie recipe weight loss guide

I’m typically a very health conscious person and I have been into smoothies as part of my as part of my nutritional routine for quite a while now and I was looking to update my smoothie recipe collection so I decided to do a little searching I came across this book and I’m glad I did because although the vast majority of the recipes are designed for weight loss. I will most likely use the nutritional value of these smoothies to help me maintain my desire to wait. Not only that but there are also some very unique and interesting recipes to deal with issues such as acne and other minor health inconveniences, all while tasting delicious. I am very intrigued by the avocado milkshake as I have had many coconut milkshakes, but I never thought of using avocado for the same effect. Overall I am extremely pleased with my purchase. As the recipes and information seem to be well thought out and well tested, and for the price point. I’m really not going to complain as the few recipes I’ve tried so far have tasted quite good. So whether you are looking for an inexpensive guide to weight loss or just looking to update your smoothie recipe book, I suggest giving this book a try. I don’t think you will be disappointed with the results.

Most of these recipes are actually for juicing, not smoothies. Also, many call for ingredients like pumpkin seeds. I have an ordinary ninja blender, no juicer, and found most of these "smoothie" recipes unsuitable for my blender.

Not a book for your averge Jane or Joe.

I am very disappointed with the book. The majority of the recipes you have to go to your local health food store and get a lot of obscure items that you never use in every day life. I guess I expected a lot more with items you can get at the store like kale, frozen strawberries, spinach and items you find in the produce section. This is not a book a can see your average Jane or Joe using in everyday life.

Cooke, retired host of Masterpiece Theater, has compiled 49 of his short pieces, mostly written for the Manchester Guardian between 1940 and 1994, that cover the gamut from cricket to baseball. Boxing is given prime space, with two profiles of Sugar Ray Robinson, in his prime ("An Epic of Courage") and in his decline ("Sugar Ray's Downfall"); and two of Muhammad Ali, in victory ("A Mountain Comes to Muhammad") and defeat ("Come-Uppance for the 'Onliest Champion'"). There are essays on tennis ("The Money Game" and "My Life with Gabriela Sabatini") and the Kentucky Derby ("The Road to Churchill Downs"). Nineteen selections are reserved for golf, its heroes, tribulations and vicissitudes. Best, however, are the portraits that have hardly anything to do with sport. There are wonderful profiles-of Frenchman Eric Tabarly, who in 1964 sailed solo across the Atlantic in 27 days, one hour and 56 minutes to break Chichester's 1962 record; and of nightclub owner Max Cohen ("Oasis in Baltimore," 1940). Cooke's obituaries for Gary Cooper, Duke Ellington and Charlie Chaplin are touching and informative. A mixed bag.

romance by the Danube...

Yes i have read your book and enjoyed it very much.
The romantic events are a little naughty, secretive, and mysterious,
and the slowly unfolding suspense kept my interest and curiosity through to the end.

The backdrop of the story and the familiar titles, names of places and
your descriptions of traditional cultural idiosyncrasies coming to life, have brought back lots of memories of my own youth.
i have found it rather interesting that the characters, mostly the young heroin's personality was quiet contradictory,
as she made adjustments to the change of her circumstances.

I don't think the "Black Swan" was in any way a sympatish character,
but never the less she was admired by many, for her stylish manipulation, and classy,
non scruples stepping over any one attitude, to get her way .

Only a turn of fate from above could destroy her evil planning.

Engaging, stylish story

I found The Gresham Symphony to be very engaging and ultimately powerful and quite realistic. The author did a beautiful job taking some basic ideas – about love, family, friendship, art and loss, and weaving them together poetically and with clarity. Erika, the main female character, is unquestionably kind and good, but her youth and inexperience are also very well presented and this makes her special. Then there is Robert, whose intentions I never doubted, but his character is so well-written that his actions tend to have a ripple effect that can be heart-breaking. I was drawn from the start by the first-person narrative throughout, which makes such interesting reading.

As the back cover states, this book also presents an interesting look at what life was like in Budapest before the collapse of communism. I highly recommend this book.

Wonderfull read

This is a wonderful read. I enjoyed it from the moment I opened the book to the moment I finished it. I do have to say the only thing I did not like about the book is the repeated use of the word "wow". I was born in Hungary around early 1970's and I had never heard of the word till I came to the U.S. In the late 80's. Everything was appropriate, culture, heritage, places, food...but not the word wow. It disappointed me each time I read it. All in all I would read it again. Thank you for allowing me a time warp visit.

About the Author
Dublin-born George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950) was an active Socialist and a brilliant platform speaker. He was strongly critical of London theatre and closely associated with the intellectual revival of British drama. Dan H. Laurence has edited Shaw's Collected Letters and Collected Plays with their Prefaces. He was Literary Advisor to the Shaw Estate until his retirement in 1990. "He is not dead: He is only asleep"

Bernard Shaw's 1919 play, "Heartbreak House," is a bitterly angry black comedy - a satire against a British imperial culture in the first two decades of the 20th century that gave rise to the excesses of the first World War, and which could (and would) do a lot worse if given the chance. Consciously drawing on a healthy and proud tradition of Irish satirists, including Jonathan Swift and Oscar Wilde, Shaw brings us into a declining English country house, which seems to be run by no one in particular for a party of apocalyptic (in)significance. The house is home to the Shotover family, the eighty-eight year old patriarch Captain Shotover, his daughter, Hesione Hushabye, and her husband Hector. Over the course of three acts, Shaw explores the 'fascinating' qualities and inhabitants of the boat-like house, and its broader implications as a kind of ship of state.
The play opens as a young woman, Ellie Dunn, arrives at the house, ostensibly the guest of Hesione. With no one to greet her, and her bags left on the front porch of the house, Ellie finds her way into the boat-like drawing room, where she meets the indefatigable Nurse Guinness, and the inscrutable Captain Shotover, who is in the midst of his latest plan to usefully dispose of the hoard of dynamite he keeps in the garden. Gradually, the party fills out as Hesione, Hector, Lady Utterword (nee Shotover), Randall Utterword (the melancholy brother-in-law), Mazzini Dunn (soldier of freedom and Ellie's father), and Boss Mangan (capitalist and Ellie's intended) arrive at this bizarre house. Hesione plans to break off Ellie's engagement to the much older Mangan, and free her to follow the course of romance, while Utterwood and Hector variously pursue their sister-in-law. Of course, Shaw does not let his characters, nor his audience, off with a simple comedy of manners.
Shaw uses the play to expose the play of civilization, in which we all have a part, but with much more comic viciousness than Wilde, and with (possibly) more brute directness than Swift. The most explicit butt of Shaw's circuitous and rapid-fire dialogues is Mangan, whose gruff capitalist demeanor and pursuit of money and reputation is ultimately the guidepost of society as Shaw envisions it. As the lowest common denominator, Mangan's crudity reflects upwards at the socially climbing Ellie, the egregious nonchalance of Hesione, and the almost intentional insanity of Captain Shotover. Shaw implies that if Mangan and his ilk are running the show, then everyone who is not working to change it is complicit in its depredations. Listless bohemians, like Hesione and Hector, give the lie to their apparent graces, in an effort to maintain sanity in the midst of their perpetual confinement with each other. Lady Utterword's complaisance belies her loveless existence, and Mazzini Dunn's servility is the mark of an idealist who has given up his ideals in favor of subsistence. Is the refinement we everyday pretend to, nothing more than a thin veneer for the animal instincts that, if broached, would expose us as Swiftian Yahoos, as Shaw implies in his Preface, or as mere children, left in charge of ever more dangerous means of annihilating everyone and everything?
The tool of satire, in the hands of a master like Shaw, compels us to examine our own lives, and the ways we live them. Does Shaw call us to action, or merely to honest self-reflection? If we are monstrous enough to blow up the preacher's house, in the early 20th century or the early 21st, then each of us must be our own Savior - a notion which should be as empowering as it is horrifying.

Great!

I recently saw the production of this play in Atlanta and I was blown away. This is a fascinating, fast-paced comedy with dark undertones about a bankrupt society. It is set in the late nineteenth/early twentieth c., but the issues turn out to be very contemporary: the question of capitalism, security vs. adventure, gender roles... I recommend it!

The absurd serving utopia

Bernard Shaw is a great playwright. In this particular play he exposes the shortcomings of English upper classes. They only think of mariage, business, politics, but England is in fact a drunken skipper, a skipper on which every sailor and even the captain are drunk with rum and unable to see the danger coming up and to deal with it. So the skipper is condemned to break on the rocks. England in the same way is condemned to break on the rocks because no one, in the upper classes, thinks beyond their interest. This catastrophe coming up is shown by some kind of supernatural explosion at the end of the play and the members of these upper classes admire the event as being beautiful and they are totally unable to cope. The picture given by Shaw of England is particularly pessimistic. Their is no future and no hope for that country. Along the way he discusses important issues such as the liberation of women within their enslavement and their power is nothing but hypnotism or drowning men in a sea of words and charm. The only sane man in the play is the captain, with an allusion to Whitman, « Captain my captain », who sees the catastrophes coming and is unable to convince his own daughters or their husbands and friends that they have to control the boat if they don't want it to capsize. But does he really want to convince them ?

The Confessio (begun about 1386) runs to some 33,000 lines in octosyllabic couplets and takes the form of a collection of exemplary tales of love placed within the framework of a lover's confession to a priest of Venus. The priest, Genius, instructs the poet, Amans, in the art of both courtly and Christian love. The stories are chiefly adapted from classical and medieval sources and are told with a tenderness and the restrained narrative art that constitute Gower's main appeal today. For those with a special interest in mediaeval literature

First, a word of warning about this edition. It simply reproduces Gower's original text and does not contain any introduction, glossary or explanatory notes. It is not, therefore, suitable for anyone not already familiar with Middle English. Unlike, however, his contemporaries William Langland (a Midlander) and the so called "Pearl Poet" (a Northerner), Gower wrote in the south-eastern dialect which formed the basis for modern standard English, so anyone who knows Chaucer in the original should have no difficulty with his language.

John Gower is, together with Chaucer, Langland and the Pearl Poet (whose true identity is unknown) one of the key figures in the English literature of the late 14th century. These authors are sometimes known as the "Ricardians", after King Richard II in whose reign they produced most of their works, and the period has been seen as representing a rebirth of English as a literary language. Ever since the Norman Conquest three centuries earlier, English, although it remained the mother-tongue of the great majority of the population, had been overshadowed by Latin and French as a written language. Indeed, Gower himself (unlike Chaucer or Langland) wrote works in both those languages, "Vox Clamantis" in Latin and "Le Miroir de l'Homme, later renamed "Speculum Meditantis", in French. "Confessio Amantis" ("The Lover's Confession") is in fact his only major work in English.

Like Chaucer's "Canterbury Tales" or Boccaccio's "Decameron" "Confessio Amantis" is a collection of tales set within a narrative framework. It is divided into eight books and takes the form of the confession made by a lover, named at first only as "Amans" (Latin for "lover") but later identified as Gower himself, to Genius, a priest of Venus. It is based upon the sort of confession a penitent might make to a Christian priest, and Genius leads Amans through the seven deadly sins, urging him to confess his "sins against love" and telling him a series of moral stories exemplifying the sins under discussion. (The one sin which is not fully dealt with is lust. In the eyes of a priest of the Goddess of Love this presumably does not count as a sin). There are also a number of lengthy digressions from the main theme, especially the whole of Book VII which consists of a lengthy discourse on the education given by Aristotle to Alexander the Great and a treatise on good kingship.

As with a number of literary works from the mediaeval and Renaissance periods the result is a blend of Christianity and paganism. Most of Genius' tales are taken from Classical mythology, but some come from history, some from the Bible and some from Christian legends of the saints. It can seem incongruous to the modern mind that a pagan priest is preaching the Christian gospel to a worshipper of Venus, but doubtless the fourteenth-century mind was less troubled by such matters.

The concept of the "seven deadly sins" also forms the basis of Chaucer's "Parson's Tale", and a number of the stories in the "Confessio" also occur in the "Canterbury Tales". For example, the "Tale of Constance" told by Gower in Book II is essentially the same as Chaucer's "Man of Law's Tale". During their lifetimes, Chaucer and Gower were held in equal esteem by their contemporaries, and had the history of English literature taken a different course, "Poets Corner" might today be centred on Gower's elaborate tomb in Southwark Cathedral rather than on Chaucer's in Westminster Abbey. As things turned out, however, it is Chaucer who is often seen as the "father of English poetry", whereas Gower is a much less well-known figure. Chaucer's influence on subsequent literature has been immense, whereas few later writers were influenced by Gower. (The obvious exception is Shakespeare, who based his "Pericles" upon the "Tale of Apollonius of Tyre" in Gower's Book VIII).

Having now read all 30,000-odd lines of the "Confessio", as well as the "Canterbury Tales" and most of Chaucer's other original works, I can understand why it is Chaucer who today enjoys the greater reputation. Whether he is a "greater" poet than Gower is a subjective matter, but to my mind there can be little doubt that Chaucer is both more original and more varied. Chaucer's standard line is the iambic pentameter, at this period a new innovation in English poetry. His lines are normally arranged in couplets, but he sometimes varies this by writing in the seven-line stanzas known as "rhyme royal" (as in "Troilus and Criseyde" or "The Prioress' Tale") or even in prose (as in "Melibeus"). Apart from a brief passage in Book VIII, Gower writes throughout in octosyllabic couplets, and his shorter lines can lead to monotonous regularity.

One of the great attractions of the Canterbury Tales" for the modern reader is the vivid picture it gives of a cross-section of mediaeval society. Chaucer's narrators are drawn from a variety of different professions, and many of, such as the Pardoner or the Wife of Bath, emerge as great characters in their own right. There is none of this variety in the "Confessio", which retains throughout the same atmosphere of courtly love, except in those lengthy digressions which have more the atmosphere of the university lecture theatre.

This does not mean that Gower is not worth reading. He is an accomplished story teller and the "Confessio" contains some fine passages. He is, however, perhaps a writer for those with a special interest in mediaeval literature rather than one for the general reader.

Shaw at his most voluble, least entertaining

After seeing this play performed at A Noise Within in Pasadena, California, I realized that the most satisfying way to appreciate it was to read it. The actors had rushed their pseudo-British accents, which made it quite challenging for the audience.
I downloaded a copy from Amazon to my Kindle. As suspected, I found it ponderous, with far too many so-called medical terms and discussions, and lacking Shaw's quick, acerbic wit. For a Shaw scholar, it might be required, for others, not so much.

I viewed the film version (starring Leslie Caron and Dirk Bogarde) and had difficulty hearing all of the dialogue. It is too old to have been captioned.
That prompted me to read the original script, which I throughly enjoyed. This was not one of Shaw's most famous plays, but it was certainly witty and prophetic. Many of the foibles of the medical profession are remain with us, though Shaw had his own prejudices and was not a scientist.
The script is wordy and the dialogue is slow-moving in parts, but I thoroughly recommend that you give it a read if you are a GBS fan and/or a
lover of clever satire and sharp dialogue.

This book provides a lot of information about the Ninja Blender. It also has a lot of tips on how to choose the correct model for your needs and also how to utilize your blender better. There are a lot of recipes to choose from, soups, smoothies, even burgers and they are surprisingly easy to make and yummy too.

This was a great book , it was very informative , I loved how the author first explained what a ninja blender is and how it works and even what it does. I enjoyed all the recipes and I envisioned them so much in my mind , the description and the pictures were very appealing . This is a must have for every household . Great book ! Great recipes . I highly recommend this !

This is a great book! It discusses differences between different ninja blenders, and then offers you awesome recipes you can make on your own in your blender: from almond milk to frozen strawberry margarita. It has detailed step-by-step instructions for making each recipe.
